Amelia, Im 73 now. About 15 years ago, I had a bone density test and was diagnosed with osteoporosis. The doctor tried to give me a prescription for Actonel. My mom took that, and it deteriorated her gums. I refused the medication because of my mom's condition. Two years ago, I fell on my back porch and broke my shoulder in two places. Agonizing!!!! During that whole ordeal, the x-rays showed my bones were healthy!!!! Don't fret over the doctors' diagnosis. Just keep living a healthy lifestyle and be happy.

Vegetarians should be concerned about lack of collagen in their diet. Collagen may help with osteoporosis because it's a protein that's a key part of bone mass. As people age, their bodies produce less collagen, which can lead to weaker bones and a higher risk of fractures. Some studies suggest that collagen supplements may help improve bone density and slow osteoporosis. Although non-vegetarians can get collagen from meats, fish and eggs, one of best sources for vegetarians is SPIRULINA, which is dark green sea weed. There are a variety of supplements available, including Spirulina capsules. Collagen is the primary building block of your body's skin, muscles, bones, tendons and ligaments, and other connective tissues. It's also found in your organs, blood vessels and intestinal lining. Proteins are made from amino acids. The main amino acids that make collagen are proline, glycine and hydroxyproline.

Amelia: a lot of bone density issues are related to the amount of calcium in your bloodstream. That’s the parathyroid gland. It is inside the thyroid gland. If you have serious osteoporosis it might be a good idea to keep checking your calcium levels related to your parathyroid gland. I had Hyperparathyroidism and the calcium levels have affected me and I have some permanent damage. It is a failure of the US medical system. I went almost 3 years. The doctors looked at my blood work but not really. I was constantly told it was psychosomatic. After going to every doctor in the US almost I got the right diagnosis and was able to get surgery right away. I suggest D3 vitamins and magnesium. Don’t assume that you need to take a lot of calcium supplements. The doctor would know more than me. I’m not a Malaysian doctor. I hope you get on the right track. To JP please don’t start using your Apple Medical App. It is designed to turn you into an anxiety ridden hypochondriac. Stress brings on heart attacks the stress of checking an app every time it dings it will just cause you stress. I know people who use the app and I’m happy they have really great insurance because they’re constantly afraid every time the thing dings. As a cynical American I think this was designed with BigPharma and the American Medical Association and the American Psychiatric Association. If you keep running to the doctor you’re just going to get more meds.

Thanks for news. My 200 cents. Amelia I began 2x wk strength training at 56. When I began I was a scrawny 170. Later at 60 I was a string buff energetic 120 -130. You can do this. I notice too over the years how you walk as similar to mine. It's a little off to 1 side. I dont know how you sleep but I trained myself to sleep on my back stretched out. When I was walking a bit uneven it was no big deal. But over time changed. Then that caused pinched nerve in back as body will compensate. I like the KZbin of Bob & Brad. They are PT really helpful. Has focused KZbin's for different issues. JP my father had high cholesterol lived til 97. I do too. I know you both might disagree? But to me it's not dietary fat that causes high cholesterol. I believe it's sugar & excess carbs. It's not all carbs. When I changed my eating to about 40% fat. 35% protein and 25% carbs? My cholesterol and triglycerides dropped. You can also take Chinese Red Yeast rice pills no prescription. Another year that lowered mine by 70 points in 3 months. My friend too. Did they look at particle size and type of LDL? With mine tho total is high, the HDL is high too. That improves risk. There is a lot of misinformation about nutrition. Vegan diet can be great but takes conscious choices. You both are great funny & charming. You can live long healthy lives. Cholesterol and osteoporosis and high fat/ muscle ratio can be changed. JP on your shoulder: go see orthopedists. I broke mine & saw 3 with 3 different opinions. If it's affordable I would. Some advocate natural healing. I could have but had surgery. There is even a FB humerus fracture and other related shoulder groups online. Very helpful. Some heal fine. Others do surgery. Ask questions. My ortho said there was a chance it could heal on its own. I asked what %? He showed me. I saw how it would have to move and change angle. So I opted for Reversed surgery. There are many choices but first need to know what IF any injury is there. Wishing you great health. Do you miss Ecuador

Great post. Going through the process of lowering carbs and sugars and getting cholesterol biomarkers in check. Years ago tried the doctor recommended low fat diet with no results, although fish oil did wonders. Just started trying red rice yeast too. High carbs and processed food also does a number on glucose and metabolic health. Otherwise healthy folks getting into pre diabetic territory over time.

That's really scary and depressing laying around sick. Of course, I could say to "stay positive" but that is easier said than done. All I can say is that I miss your videos. You have become a member of my extended family. I sincerely hope everything turns out happy for you both. Fortunately, you had this opportunity to be in one of the best places in the world for getting all of the tests done and you will soon know what you are both up against, which is definitely better than not knowing. I'll give you all the positive vibes, well-wishes, and prayers I can.

Your video really resonated with me. I’m a 50-year-old woman who’s been vegan all my life and super active and athletic. Lap pool swimmer and runner. I walk almost 13 hours a week. My bubble got burst with my recent blood work showing high cholesterol as well, in spite of not consuming any fat in my diet. Other things have shown up as well as early stages of kidney damage and some liver damage. I don’t drink and I don’t smoke. Ultimately, I stopped stressing about it and accepted that I am only human and I am aging. I feel great. This is what counts. Excellent video. Thank you.😊

Thanks for sharing this - this is great to know about KL. Osteoporosis is extremely common and usually broken hips are understood to break and CAUSE the fall, not to break because of a fall, so that's interesting to hear about the padding. At any rate, genetically European-descended women who have mostly lived in U.S. and are on the smaller side are the primary population for osteoporosis, having been bred for smallness over hundreds of years and being in a nutrition/health upbringing that does not super-promote massive weight-bearing. In U.S. it is a main reason given for going on HRT, though that only agrees with some people so it will be interesting to see what recommendations you get there from more hybrid east/west physicians. So glad you are well enough to do the weight work on it - many of us have other conditions that get hurt doing weight work (more like JP is running into), and it really limits and frustrates the plan. Thinking of you all - thanks for the update and don't worry about editing. People futz with that so much and honestly it doesn't add enough to a video relative to the effort one has to put in to edit. Just take interesting videos and then summarize or add a slide. I wish I had a live-in buddy to teach me how to do that! Glad y'all do :). Take care this week!

I need some dental work done. My Medicare doesn't pay for it. I want to travel to Malaysia soon and wondered if there was a good place to get it done there? If so, do you have a clinic that you would recommend? So scary to do medical tourism if you don't know who best to use! I have heard horror stories too.
@stevegfromnc34822 ай бұрын
@lolaz1936 You are right to be careful. I have had bad experiences with dentists in Mexico and Turkiye. I am sure both countries have good dentists, but the ones I went to were not. Both times I chose based on online articles or reviews that were positive. But the people always write immediately after when they are happy about low prices and personal attention, not months later when the work turns out to be bad.

It is extremely common for women in peri and post-menopause to experience bone density issues along with estrogen loss, which is one reason that going on HRT can be beneficial.

Nice to have you back! Sorry about the flu/cold but that sometimes happen when you travel far. Did you have a lot of street food? My female friend got osteoporosis and she was precribed oestrogen and it worked like charm! I take a medical checkup every year, it cost about $65 in Sweden and if you go to a private place and take an extended blood test it is $200. The normal checkup is a smaller blood test, diabetes, blood value, blood fats, cholesterol etc and EKG and the doctor listen to your lungs, blood pressure, if you have spots on your skin they look at it and decide if you need to send a sample to a lab. They compose it according to your age. The waiting time is shorter for the privates like one week but is is not more expensive. Fun thing: I wanted a whole body scan and it was a long waiting list. Then they fixed a time at a vet clinic for horses and other big animals, the machine is identical and you can send the results over internet. So now I am a horse! 😂. But it is always: eat better and more exercise!

Hi Amelia and JP. I admire both of you. Despite the fact that you walk a lot, that doesn't help to gain and/ keep muscle mass. Weight training is the only thing that does that. I have two herniated discs but keep doing weights keeps me out of the surgery room. Follow a good training protocol and I warranty you'll improve. If I can help you on that I'm at your orders. Keep up the good job to educate us about living abroad.
