My dog's the opposite, he will always make sure _his_ cats are fed before he eats, and since they are social eaters he will stand guard. He raised them from when they were kittens, and they are his boys. Even with treats he will send them on ahead, but that might be because he knows that their plantive meows at the fridge will break me (he smiles and licks his lips when they put on their act).

Animals are the best! I wish we were more like them! He’s not the biological dad? He doesn’t care. Not even his species? Don’t care. Most will love and care for anything. It’s just beautiful to watch like, a cat that nursed and raised ducklings. Sounds like you’ve got one happy fur family!

So cute, mine and hubby's dog is protective of her younger cat brother, and if any other animal makes him nervous, she will step between them to guard them. Also guards the other cats when needed but chooses him over the others when they argue ❤

I’ve got a pitbull and a chihuahua mix. My chihuahua boy always waits until my pittie girl has started eating before he will eat. It doesn’t matter how much space is between them, he watches and waits for her to eat before he will. It’s not due to either of them going after the other’s food either, they’ve never had conflicts with food before, he just does not like to be the first one eating.

I've dealt with this... you make them go back and wait and they don't get to eat unless they do it.... at the same time you treat the other dog that's doing what you expect of them the same as you normally would. the dog who's inching forward will stop really quick.

My dog, Jun, is resource aggressive, she has trouble sharing things she really likes and gets extremely territorial when it comes to food. Although water she shares with the house cats no problem. In these cases, you’re very right, creative solutions can be the best ones. Like letting the cats near the dog’ food before she’s allowed to eat. The cats don’t eat her food, they just want to sniff it.

You can also try giving them their food further apart from each other so there's less instinctual food guarding adding to his behavior. Having our dogs eat in separate rooms definitely helped tone down the bad behaviors when we switched to that style of feeding.
