In this video Corin shows us his demonstration trees from our annual bonsai bash. He also gives us guided tour of the collection.
CLOCKWISE FROM THE ENTRANCE (left hand side of studio)
Japanese Maple, Acer palmatum. Root over rock style.Originally from the collection of Peter Brown, grown over a rock collected by Peter from a local beach in Devon. Recently redesigned and potted into a Walsall studio ceramics pot.
Ezo Spruce, Picea jezoensis. In Sperling Ceramics pot. Twin trunk styled by Corin over the last 10 years originally imported from Japan.
Seiryu Maple, Acer palmatum ‘Seiryu’ For over 20 years this has been styled by Corin, since being imported. This year it is looking especially nice. Recently it has been potted into a most beautiful pot by French bonsai potter Greg ceramics.
Mikawa Yatsabusa Maple, Acer palmatum ‘Makawa Yatsabusa’. Planted in Gordon Duffet pot. Owned by Corin for 15 years. Had hardly any branches when he first bought it and a massive hole at the top of the trunk. It has all healed and filled out very nicely.
Japanese Mountain Hemlock, Tsuga diversifolia. A recent addition here at Greenwood. A very rare tree in the UK, Corin has been trying to track one down for years. It has distinctive aged bark, a future show tree. In a vintage Japanese Yamaki pot.
Trident Maple, Acer buergerianum. Root over rock style. Imported from Japan a few years ago. Came in to Greenwood as a part exchange against a larger specimen. Now resides in Corin’s collection. Planted on to such a beautiful piece of ibigawa rock. Potted into a vintage Walsall studio ceramics bonsai pot.
Koto-no-ito Maple, Acer palmatum ‘Koto-no-ito’ An unusual fine leaf maple not often grown as bonsai. Very fine cut leaf and amazing bright orange autumn colour, make this a rare but rewarding tree to grow.
European Larch, Larix decidua. Originally yamadori material from Europe. Owned by a customer until last year when he sadly passed away. This tree has since been kept at Greenwood in his memory. Re-potted into a vintage Ian Baillie pot, chosen to compliment the aged bark of the collected tree.
Japanese Maple, Acer palmatum. Cascade style in a Japanese Shuhu pot. The copper in the glaze of the pot makes it really suit the tree in Autumn mirroring a similar colour in the leaves.
END DISPLAY - TRIO OF SHISHIGASHIRA MAPLES
LEFT - Shishigashira maple, Acer palmatum ‘Shishigashira’ Bought around 10 year ago at the Trophy show in Belgium. It was a bit neglected and in a small pot back then and has really come on under Corins care. In a vintage Walsall pot.
CENTRE - Shishigashira maple, Acer palmatum ‘Shishigashira’ After many years searching for a really impressive Shishigashira we were lucky enough to source and import this tree in 2024. Styling and refinement have just started and it will be repotted next year. Watch this space.
RIGHT - Shishigashira maple, Acer palmatum ‘Shishigashira’ This tree was hand selected in Japan by Corin during the World Bonsai Convention 6 years ago. It has grown on so well in that time. Now residing in a Chinese Sher-ming bonsai pot, chosen for when the tree displays bright orange / red colour leaves.
RIGHT HAND SIDE OF STUDIO (from far end back to door)
Beech, Fagus sylvatica. Collected over 30 years ago from the New Forest and last exhibited over 10 years ago. This magnificent specimen now resides at Greenwood. Planted in a Gordon Duffet pot.
Korean Hornbeam, Carpinus turczaninowii. Trained by Corin for over 24 years, about 16 years ago it did not leaf out in Spring and had the whole year off. It is now growing well and has lovely small leaves. Planted in a Stone Monkey pot.
Satsuki Azalea, Rhododendron indicum ‘Hanabin’ A relatively new cultivar of Satsuki. Despite being a fairly young tree it is exhibited here for you to enjoy its seasonal flowering. Recently planted into a Chinese pot to complement its flowers.
Rough Bark Maple, Acer palmatum ‘Arakawa’. Imported from Japan 6 years ago. Another tree bought as part of Corins ongoing quest to have maples with impressively thick trunks in his collection. Planted in a Gordon Duffet pot commissioned especially for the tree.
Cornelian Cherry, Cornus mas. Originally Collected in Eastern Europe 20 years ago, this tree has been in the UK for 15 years. It has been in at least three bonsai collections. Once sold by us it has returned. I think it will stay put this time.
Deshojo Maple, Acer palmatum ‘Deshojo’. Bought for its powerful trunk despite its small stature. Potting into a hand selected Sperling Ceramics pot.
Painted Red Fingernail Maple, Acer palmatum ‘Tsuma-beni’. A fun little surprising tree. Spotted by Corin during a recent trip to Europe when not in leaf labelled as a normal Acer palmatum. Imagine his surprise when it leafed out as a Tsuma-beni!
Ukon Maple, Acer palmatum ‘Ukon’. Cascade style planted in a custom made Walsall Studio crescent pot. Corin has worked on this tree for 15 years.

You single handedly inspired me to start my very own collection. I have very minimal experience growing anything at all, but I'm thankful to have finally found a healthy hobby and to be a part of such a unique and broad spectrum of people. Just when I started to give up on the world, I found hope. All in a little mini tree. I hope you have a wonderful day! We all really appreciate your time.

Bonsai is beautiful and so are the people in to it. It’s not a platitude when I say that “bonsai has saved my life.” I had almost 15yrs of drug addiction…….. bonsai has given me peace of mind and a reason to look forward to tomorrow! I wish u well on growing a garden!! Take care

Not only are the bonsai beautiful, Greenwood is tidy and weed freed, and the inshop goods are presented in a clean and organised matter. Sunday was lovely. I even got a proper cuppa and some very good banana and Nutella cake 😋 Thank you Corin, Paul, et el.

i didn't get a chance to look closely at all the exhibition trees. The way that trident's bark flows over the rock makes it look like they've been paired together forever

I really enjoyed my trip with my American Lady, and met a lovely lady, her man and their dog too debating which blue cedar to get. They also pointed out the cedar of lebanon whips to me, one of the three trees I had decided I would buy next before I bought any more. The others were Pauls Scarlett and a Gingko but I only saw one amazing Pauls Scarlett but unfortunately a bit beyond my wallet! Walked away with pots and training trees, didn’t spend as much as I thought and really enjoyed the inspiration from some of the mighty trees in the outdoor collection. To the lady I met, best of luck with your cedar, I think you picked the best of the bunch and hope you can make something of it!

I really do appreciate you thinking of your fans over here in the states who wish we could be there, and hope to visit you there someday. As a newer Bonsai enthusiast, and already 62, if I ever have 1 tree as remarkable as any one of your exhibition trees, I will feel like it’s been well worth it. Actually with the roughly 20 I have, mostly being pre-bonsai, I’ve already found it very rewarding just experiencing the process. Thank you for sharing your talent and skills!

Thank you for your dedicated work. It does a lot to keep many of us going and it is a good practice to be in even if our trees won’t make it to this level. I find it is the closeness to the tree over years of cultivation that matter the most to me, keeping them healthy working with them, letting them be. I also like the variety. I will plan a visit someday and check out your website. We all appreciate what you do.

I lost a shishigashira maple over the Winter. I believe you apprenticed in Michigan. Were the Winters there a problem with Japanese maples? I'm just South of there and Japanese Maples seem to do OK in the ground here but have trouble over wintering in pots even when the pots are mulched into the ground.
