Must if running E85 1 for proper atomization engine must operate at 185 temp. 2. A blaster 2 coil is not enough to ignite ethanol. Must run a HVC coil. 3. For SBC on E85 36 deg. Is about all they like. 4. If you park your car more than a week or two you should drain the bowls and empty the Excelerator pumps. If you get gel in your carburetor like that simply fill the carburetor up with gasoline and let it sit for a day or two it will completely dissolve all the gel! No need to tear the carb apart.

You should write a book on carburetors and what everything does and how it all works. I'm serious, you have a way of explaining things that a big dummy like me can understand. Or, have a tech section in your playlist on KZbin on carburetors, camshaft selection for sure, and other building, tuning, how to's, etc... I'd buy your book, or audio book, or whatever. You'd make a dang good trade school instructor. You remind me a lot of my late uncle, who was full of knowledge but humble and eager to help people out. Love me some E85, been running it in my Malibu since 2010, TT SBC fast XFI fuel injection. 13:1 355 and about 25psi with two little 50mm turbos. You want to use a stand alone wideband O2 with the scale from 7:1 to 10:1, best power will be around 7.5:1AFR and best mileage between 8.5:1 and 9.5:1. The ECM isn't going to give you an accurate reading because its on the gasoline scale and won't show rich enough. With your blower you should pick up a good bit of power regardless, because ethanol cools the intake charge under the blower so much, and you can give it the advance it wants rather than being worried about knocking pistons and rod bearings out of it.

On that Camaro a nice aluminum radiator designed as a Big Block replacement and a factory big block 7 blade fan with the HD clutch would most likely cure the overheating. But never forget the importance of a properly fit and sealed shroud. If you feel the need for E85 then by all means go for it.

Just thought I'd mention that my gas mileage almost doubled when I got my vacuum advance working right, engine ran much cooler too. Another thing I noticed was that without the vacuum advance, I had to keep my foot in the throttle like halfway, almost getting into the secondaries, just to stay at 65-70 MPH. Once I got the vacuum advance dialed in, I could cruise at 65-70 MPH with the throttle just barely cracked open.
@HPRaceDevelopment2 жыл бұрын
Engineers kinda knew what they were doing....In modern EFI systems its really impressive how good the OEM engineers have dialed in part throttle timing curves (tons of advance)
@cfmechanic2 жыл бұрын
@@HPRaceDevelopment I am trying to duplicate vacuum advance curve with sniper efi and hyperspark system. Kinda struggling to figure out safe lean cruise afr and timing advance.
@HPRaceDevelopment2 жыл бұрын
@@cfmechanic Most people try to go too lean on cruise - it usually doesn't result in better economy after a certain point - if the engine is cammed at all - I suggest stay in the middle to high 13's afr wise which will really help any mis fires or stumbles vs tryign to dial in around 14.7 ( lamda around 1....We usually deal in lamda rather than afr - lamda .92-.95 ish is good cruise) Spark wise - A good tip I heard was use a vacuum gauge ran into the car - and play with the timing while at cruise until you reach peak vacuum. Of course listen for knock - but that works really well. Numbers as high as 50 degrees low throttle are not uncommon. Eventually you can advance so much is will mis some - so that's something to listen for. Just slowly work away at it - and anything past 75 percent throttle should mimic your WOT timing curve...
@cfmechanic2 жыл бұрын
@@HPRaceDevelopment awesome amazing tips. My idle is nice at 14.7 cruise is set to 13.5ish I tried 13.8 but felt too lean slight miss at steady light throttle. I'm only running around 27 degrees in cruise will follow your tips thanks.
@HPRaceDevelopment2 жыл бұрын
@@cfmechanic on a car without individual cylinder control, you will find through testing that you have lean and rich cylinders that avg out to the lamda you see. The variance is huge. For this reason - you may find it best to tune for lamda .9 at cruise and wot power lamda of .84 or .85. Afr aprox 13.0 for cruise and 12.0-12.6 wot. this keeps the really lean cylinders from being say 16:1 afr

I've got a 69 Camaro that has been sitting in my garage for quite some time. After watching your videos. It is beginning to spark my interest back in to my old girl that I've owned since 1992. Since my son was born I have let my car sit in my garage with out doing anything to it (priorities). My son now 15 almost 16 has been dropping hints that he wants me to do something with the car. I have been considering the switch to E-85 for quite some time. My current set up is rather out dated but is fine for the application and it's intended use. I have a stock fuel tank that has been modified with a sump. I have a Fram fuel filter housing and a Holley blue pump and regulator. I have 3/8 inch aluminum fuel lines running the length of the vehicle then just below the fire wall i switch to braided fuel lines to the regulator and to the carbs dual feen lines. The motor is fueled by two Holley 650 Double pumper carbs. The main reason I've have been shying away from using the E-85 is the corrosive properties of the Ethanol with Aluminum. Besides changing the carburetors and aluminum fuel lines what other recommendations would you suggest?

Good luck if you go racing and if you're going to be doing that, I'd be looking for a 12-bolt rear end replacement or a 9-inch, even better yet. It's not likely your ever going to get rid of that beautiful thing anyhow, or at least I wouldn't be. Damn, I wish I had half the cars I've owned back, and at 72 years you can only imagine what that would consist of. Woops, didn't mean to go off on a tangent like that. I have been running E85 in my fuel injected Turbo V6 since 2019. If you are fuel injected, make sure you run a high-quality fuel filter like a IF-750 from Injector dynamics. The other thing is you need to change the oil sooner. I do it every 2k miles. When you change the oil, it will smell like the town drunk. It can get diluted with E85. It's more noticeable in the winter months. If you park the car for the winter, make sure you pickle the fuel system with gas. It will help to keep things clean and it won't gum up as it sits.

@ericschumacher51892 жыл бұрын
Hey Bill; something to consider since E85 is more detonation resistant than pump gas, is using a (slightly) higher temperature thermostat.....I know it sounds counterintuitive but, the ideal coolant temp between different fuels (ex: gas vs methanol) and different engine materials (ex: all-iron vs. all-aluminum) changes for the best thermodynamic efficiency. As said if your not knock limited, doing so can translate to more power, better fuel economy, and cleaner oil, but it it all depends on the tuneup to take full advantage of it.....I’d expect a thermostat of around 180-degrees be about the point of maximum beneficial coolant temp on E85, and up to around 200-being the point of diminishing returns or slight loss (based on what I’ve read / seen)......there’s some good content on this topic on YT where dyno water temp is swung to the high/low extremes on different fuels and the gains / losses can sometimes be surprising. BTW; my statement is based on you not having any cooling issues at the track, and it can get back down to thermostatic temp between rounds; if it that’s not the case then just ignore my comment. Keep up the good work 👍

Hey bill I’ve got a question not about E85, just wondering if your thinking of upgrading the rear end, would love to see that car run a low/mid 10

I don't remember what they did after you broke the axle but an easy upgrade is a 4th gen f body posi unit. They are 28 spline vs the Malibus 26. But also we have found that if you pull the gear back to a 3:23 or 3:42 you are less likely to strip the teeth off the pinion. But once you get into the 3:73 or lower gears that becomes a problem.
