i visited Roche Rock when I was 19, 35 years ago. I might be mistaken but i think that strong ladder wasn’t there then, there were single metal bars sticking out that were much more precarious than that ladder. I’ve always meant to revisit it, but somehow never have. While I was walking around the rock, I saw the glint of silver pertly buried and when i unearthed it, it was a victorian silver thruppeny bit. Something i’ve always treasured. I always imagined a victorian lady or gentleman tourist dropping it on a tourist trip like mine ❤😊

it certainly wasn’t that strong ladder of today. Old rusty few steps of a little ladder then ladder steps into the rock itself to get higher. Oh to have a phone camera back then lol

My childhood playground,we used to sit on the top arch .the access is dangerous by today’s standards but people are different now us 1970s feral kids were a different breed,we climbed all over that rock and none of us got hurt.The site was used in the filming of the Omen the final conflict much to our delight,though I think the film crew had quite enough of long haired scruffy kids by the time they had finished 😂

Do you remember the park with the tractor? I was probably one of those kids was my childhood playground too my Nan lived up the road. Was told and always believed a leper/hermit lived at the very top and food was pulled up and down in a bucket. Somewhere to the side of the rock there was remains of huge chains and a primitive pulley 🤔

Another great vlog. In medieval times it was common that religious houses, in this case a chapel, were built over a former hermitages or similar. Wonder if that was the case there.

Love you two! The spirit of tregeagle obviously lives on in the mindless stupidity of half closing off a ladder, making it even more dangerous and challenging to young people. Lord Falmouth needs to come and see for himself. Did the person who fell sue him? A simple at your own risk sign would suffice and the excuse of harming wildlife is a scam, unless rare birds are nesting?

I live here in Roche and have this wonderful view every day. If you continued to walk along the football field and turn left along side another field you will find another access gate to the rock. There is also a gate in the corner of the cricket field that gives you access to the road then it’s just a few steps to the access point you went in. Don’t try to go in at the cricket nets and old roller, it’s very tricky. Remember it is very rich in wildlife so during bird nesting time please be careful, it’s also a known adder hotspot so please be aware during warmer months. Parking in the football car park. Great video guys.

But as Andrew said they could put a notice at the bottom saying you climb up the ladder at your own risk. Put a tea room at the top, charge people to go up, they would make a killing :) Everywhere you go that used to be free they charge now.. Sign of the times now. We visited a few years ago, a truly beautiful place. You can actually access it (as we did) from the roller at the beginning where Andrew was, it is tricky but doable. I had heard that they had closed the access to it earlier this year which is a shame… but at least it has been done in a way that is not too intrusive to the area. Which is good as it makes a great photo opportunity. Hopefully we shall visit again in November. Keep up the great work

I live just a couple of miles from Roche. Five or six years ago our eldest daughter and I decided to climb Roche Rock one winter afternoon, forgetting that it would get dark early. We went in from the road side, the same way you did. After a while it began to get dark, it was really quite atmospheric and spooky, so we decided it was time to go home. The trouble was, we were lost! We ended up on the other side of the rock and eventually found our way back via the cricket ground. Definitely not the place to be in the dark!

Really nice video, Roche rock also used for filming,The Final Conflict (1981): The final installment in the Omen series was filmed at Roche Rock, which stood in for a deserted church on the moor Sword of the Valiant (1984): This movie was also filmed at Roche Rock , nowadays access is not allowed, although i have flown drones over to get a view of it from above, loved this video , keep on walking .

The problem is these days that landowners are responsible for any injuries sustained on their land. Whilst it should be down to those who want to take the risk to be able to climb it, I can see why the landowner would want to protect themselves from any claims against them. Ideally the ladder would be repaired, but preventing access is the easiest (and cheapest) option.

Fun vlog. Shame you can't go up the ladder. The 7m vertical iron-rung ladder down the cliffs at Dover, which is part of the "Langdon Stairs" is still open to use (at your own risk).

Late to the party but I lived in Roche for a couple of years, in the new estate opposite the site entrance. It does not surprise me to learn that the Rock has been closed since I left. At the time I moved in I was told that, although people did climb up to the chapel, the ladder was pretty rickety and there were rumblings about closing it off due to health and safety concerns. I would have loved to get up there but with my dodgy knees and in any case not being good on ladders that was never going to happen 🙁 Maybe the Lord Falmouth will be able to reopen it in the future with some kind of renewed ladder and guard rails?

Great video and solid research as always. And an impressive rock! I wonder how legends like this start. People were really superstitious in earlier times, more than now. Perhaps they thought this was the logical and believeable answer. I have never been there. But will consider if they open the steps again 😊 A 4 digits combination lock has 10000 possible solutions. With 2 seconds try on each number, the worst case scenario is that it takes about 5,5 hours to find the right one 😂 But it is probably the best not to try 😊 Thank you. Torunn 🥰

I've never heard of it. Next time I'm going through Roche, I'll see if I can find it. You'd have to be pretty fit to climb that ladder and back down again and you wouldn't attempt it if you weren't. It's elf and safety gone silly again. You can walk down a pavement in Truro and trip on a loose slab which Cormac hasn't bothered to fix. Accidents will always occur. What happened to commonsense? It might be an SSSI, but there is a lot of growth around it, so will be hidden from view soon.

Roche Rock can still be accessed from the western side, as well as the northern side (which is the side with the ladder). In fact, for centuries, it's been a rite of passage for Roche children to climb the rock, not by the ladder, but to scrabble and climb up the bare rocks on the western side. However, it is not for the faint hearted. Sadly, Lord Falmouth has only made it more dangerous, not less.
