With this braid tutorial you will learn to to braid cornrows in natural straight hair! Braiding cornrows is easy after you learn hold the strands tight enough! Cornrows last in use very well, you can easily wear them 3-5 days in row so this hairstyle for great for festival hair or for busy school week, when you don't have to time make a new hairstyle every morning. Cornrows fit as well for short hair than for long hair and everything between! Many of my followers asking all the time hairstyle for short hair so if you looking a one, here you are! Braid styles you can create using cornrows, are endless! You can find more inspiration for different type of cornrow hairstyles from my IG account:
myhairstyle_xo
Video includes
Creating a partlines for cornrows
Creating a partlines is important part of braiding. Changing the shape of the partings you can create incredible cornrow hairstyles! In this easy hair tutorial I show to you how to braid side cornrows. When you part the hair, you need stable hand. I suggest you make the parting with determined hand, not slowly and carefully. But you can always fix the partline afterwards - it doesn't need to be perfect with one stroke!
Dutch braid, how to braid cornrows
Take a small section of hair and separate it in three equal sections. Beginning to bring hair strands from side under to the middle. Add hair to the braid from both sides of the braid. Focus to hold the hair strand you are moving, tightly between two fingers. I use thumb-fore finger and thumb-middle finger holdings.Notice that YOU DON'T NEED
to hold all strands tightly! I hold the strands on sides with my ring finger and little finger, so they are easier to pick up when I need to use them. In theory you can let them go 100% if you want and it doesn't effect how tight your braid will be IF you tight the strand you're going to move before you start to moving it. The strand you moving MUST be tight and that settle how tight your braid will be.
HAIR TIPS:
If you're struggling with part lines, I suggest you to try wet your hair before parting. In that way the most smallest strands won't escape from your fingers so easily.
Braiding technique (how you hold the strands) is easier with bigger strands at first. But once you learn to hold strands you can braid using one hair at time without any problem! At the beginning the braiding is easier when you can see / feel the strand in your fingers.
Search the holding that works for you! Keepin gthe strands in fist doesn't usually work as you cannot keep them tight enough in that way!
Beginning the braiding from top of the head and move downwards. In this way you cannot poking the braids all the time.
THE MOST COMMON PROBLEMS
Braid is too loose.
Focus to hold strand you are moving tighter. Notice that before every move you need to pull hairstrand tight again!
Hair stick out between the stitches
Sometimes the hair quality is kind of that the hair doesn't naturally turn inside of the braid, instead of the braid looks like hairy worm! In this case twisting the hair strand works almost every time. So twist the hair to inwards before bringing the hair strand under to the middle.
Braid is bigger / smaller than I expect
The size of the braid you can change the best to make smaller / bigger partlines. In fine hair is very hard to make big cornrows without using hair extensions or without pancaking the braid. If you pancake the braid, it won't be tight anymore and it won't last as long as it would without pancaking.

Thank you!

@Blarie She lives in Finland. "As they should be"? No, actually they shouldn't. It's unproductive and rude. Vikings and Croatians wear all kinds of braids. (Google it). Not everyone is American. Also, black people wear blonde straight hair and we're not hating, so just stop it. Why can't we just all love one another. Life is too short to be petty.

The Minoan culture of Crete was the first recorded to have cornrow style braiding around 3900 BC in a vase. So did the Greek, Vikings, Chinese and, of course, African cultures. No culture stole the idea of braiding of hair from any other culture, it is a natural progression of keeping long hair in shape and out the way and developed more sophisticated over time. Cultural appropriation is a ridiculous American mindset that is steeped in racial segregation that only exists in America and should stay that way. It essentially means that no one from any race can wear clothes and hairstyles or act in a way not associated with their own race. If that's not racism, I don't know what is. Everywhere else in the world loves it when people of other races and cultures emulate their own culture and export it so that other countries can see who beautiful their customs and traditional clothing styles are. The Chinese love it when other races wear a cheongsam (unless they are fat apparently). The Japanese love it when other races wear a kimono (unless it is not put on properly) The Germans love it when other races wear a dirndl (unless you tie the belt knot in the wrong position according to your marital status). The Scottish love it when other races wear a Kilt (unless you DON'T wear underwear when your kilt is rented). No one is really ever "woke". People are only as woke as what is the societal norm at the time. Trust that the thought of labeling something as cultural appropriation will be deemed as racist and unacceptable in 10 years time.
@tyraklemm8819
@tyraklemm8819 3 жыл бұрын
Thank you for this! As a Scottish descendant, I love these braids. I've seen so many other cultures practice this, and love incorporating different styles to my own. My hair is so thick and long, and it dreds very easily. It keeps my hair tidy so I don't have to fight with my hair every morning undreding it for over an hour. I also love these braids because of my spiritual beliefs and I can use them as a head covering. In no way does that mean that I am "oppressed" or "controlled". I see it as a means of cleanliness and I can spot others a mile away who dress their hair with "spirit braids". Lest people forget, in a lot of cultures (Scottish, Vikings, some Mediterranean societies, etc), men and women braided pieces of their hair before battle. And of course, it's always fun to shake things up a bit and try new hairstyles anyway. So, let's have some fun and braid away! Braids don't segregate, now do they? 🥰
@delloda
@delloda 3 жыл бұрын
@Jelana Rainovic Even if she did try to make boxer braids there is nothing wrong with that. If a hairstyle is good, it should be shared and glorified. If you ban other races from using the hairstyles that someone has deemed for their race only, this is called segregation and is racism. America fought long and hard to end segregation and now it rears it's ugly head again but amazingly from the other side of the spectrum.

@Adi Actually there is no proof that Vikings wore cornrows. No images of them have survived and their art doesn't show any type of braided hairstyles. Also contemporaries of the Vikings never claimed they braided their hair but rather kept their hair short. I think alot of you are getting this idea from the tv show. You are aware the stylist of the show admitted she "made up" those hairstyles and took some "creative license" with it because there no one knows what the Vikings looked like except that they were White.

I only use gel sometimes tho, but my hair texture isn't the same as other African americans, since I'm biracial. I have the 4c hair type.

Agreed on detangling, gel, and you can wipe hairspray over flyaways, but the more product on your hair, the sooner it flakes and itches. I braid half and let the rest of my hair be naturally flyaway, so the look blends.

hey man i know it might seem weird to you, but it’s really important to some cultural people, because their culture is being used and warped by people who aren’t even of the same culture! I don’t want to start an argument with you, just try to put yourself in their shoes. There are variations of braids from many cultures, but cornrows and box braids specifically originate from African cultures. In this video, the braids do belong to a Scandinavian culture, and the woman in this video never refers to them as cornrow of box braids. But if she did, she would be taking from another culture, and that wouldn’t be ok.

@@finlaymarron Yes culture should be shared and embraced but sometimes people don’t credit the people who make it and that’s when it turns to cultural appropriation and another thing i am black and some hairstyles form my culture can be too harsh oh straight and fine hair i have no problem sharing my culture and teaching you but when you discredit my people and don’t acknowledge the fact that i told you that’s when i’m angry and upset like u said culture is meant to shared but for her and the hairstyle she’s doing on herself it could cause alopecia and damage to her scalp instead of doing it on herself maybe she could find people with right kind oh hair or show on wigs

@heyhey439 3 жыл бұрын
@@shaqs_oatmeall People that wear cornrows are aware that Himba folk invented it. Highly doubt that anyone does their hair the way it began though. It's impossible to appropriate because culture is more abstract and compelling (and important) than something you can snag from a Walmart. If everyone had to acknowledge the inventor every time they did or said or used anything there would be no time in the day for any real progress. The more we share and learn with each other the stronger our world will be. As a side note, it's perfectly fine to braid straight hair snugly the way she did.
