Elsie (Pat Phoenix) is unsympathetic to Dennis’s (Philip Lowrie) sulking over her night job. Dennis tells Ena (Violet Carson) all about it and she encourages him to shame his mother. Trevor Ogden (Jonathan Collins) borrows Len’s (Peter Adamson) handcart but refuses Len’s offer of an apprenticeship. Jack (Arthur Leslie) gets new locks installed by Len due to burglaries in the area. Ena and Minnie (Margot Bryant) refuse a cleaning job at the Rovers suggesting Hilda (Jean Alexander) instead. Dennis tells Irma (Sandra Gough) about his shame at Elsie's job leading to Dennis impulsively resigning from his hairdressing course, a decision Elsie later reverses. Ena publicly shames Elsie for her modelling work. Irma secures her mother the cleaning job at the Rovers. At night, Ena hears a burglar breaking into the mission and she orders them to make themselves known.
