😂 When I used to see this on TV, Bet Lynch always seemed kind of old, and Deirdre was dull and frumpy. Now, watching it in 2023, Bet looks a lot younger than I recall. And Deirdre? She is so pretty! And slim, and natural. 😂 The years really change your perspective. And the programme itself is such a clever mix of drama and charming comedy. It really makes today's soaps look so bloody miserable. It's an absolute pleasure to watch this again.

8:32 Just genius writing dropping in just the right amount of.comedy. Chalky and Phyllis arguing and Eddie in the background trying to get a word in to tell them that he's got to go. No break in the bickering long enough so Eddie gives up and just says "I'm going" and walks out. Remember it making me chuckle at the time of first broadcast, and raises the same laughs today

What a very silly storyline, Hilda and Mrs. Ernshaw. It seems like the writers had something in mind, then decided to lose the story, but it really was a silly story and not worthy of Jean Alexander's talent.

I don't understand why Rita said Mavis didn't live around there, in the conversation about the Duckworth's buying the Fairclough's old house. But she lives in a flat above the Kabin, which I thought was just around the corner from Coronation Street and the Duckworth's.

Maybe it's because he wasn't part of a couple/double act like some of the other characters. They rarely made him more than the grumpy old man who, when he'd stopped clashing with the Fairclough's, was forever fending off Phyllis. There was a storyline involving him moving in with a widow, only to find that another old bloke had beaten him to it. The writers should have been more adventurous with Chalkie.

It has only been a few short months since Ken won back Dierdre from the more exciting Mike, and he's already plunged the poor woman back into his yawningly boring, ghastly life. Muttering, in his robotic way, about the most boring job on God's planet, casting suicidal gloom into the hearts of everybody he meets. She must have just resigned herself to a life 'most ordinary'. Either that, or she is a dedicated masochist. Poor girl.

Ken was just awful, a complete and utter bore, the type you'd avoid in the pub. I always lost the will to live listening to that nasally voice droning on. Do you think Kellogg’s had a deal with Coronation Street as every household seems to have Corn Flakes for breakfast or on the table. I don't like what they did to Terry later, with all Jack's po-faced moralising and no-son-of-mine nonsense. Jack was a terrible father and Terry had a rotten life with those two, caught between their bickering and infidelities and Jack's idleness and cadging. All that seemed to get whitewashed later as they tried to make Jack and Vera seem as loveable as Stan and Hilda. They weren't.

@@alexanderjones9572 Stan certainly changed. He mellowed. Have you seen that 1966 episode where he thinks he's won the Pools because Hilda has incorrectly filled in the coupon? He throws a chair from the upstairs window and gives Hilda a black eye, although you don't see anything. But I think Stan was a more caring father than Jack Duckworth. I'd definitely contribute, PG66 is wonderful for doing all this! I've watched countless episodes now, and as for Brian's acting, it improved significantly by 1981/2. I used to find him so irritating, then I started to feel sorry for him, being stuck between his dreadful domineering mother who'd still have him in a pushchair if she could, and Gail, who nagged and complained endlessly and, particularly in the earlier days, regularly ran upstairs in tears.

Horrible horrible character Ivy Tilsley. Not worried about her husband, just worried about what people will think. ‘Drunk with his nerves’ no gone insane with living with her.

As much as I enjoy these episodes - and I do enjoy them - I sometimes feel like I'm watching something set in 1883 and not 1983. Corrie's attitudes certainly didn't reflect the times.

Yes and Albert mumbles when he talks. Always found I really had to listen hard to catch what he was saying most of the time. I never had any problem understanding anyone in Corrie as I'm British but it must be difficult for non Brits to follow his conversations. 🤔

I always thought what a terrible man Terry Duckworth was and always wondered why Vera always blamed Jack. Watching these earlier episodes I now understand. Vern was good to Terry, but what a nightmare Vera and Jack were in those years. No wonder Terry turned out rotten

Barm Cake. A kind of large bread roll made with yeast. Barm is another word for yeast. As the yeast ferments, it creates alcohol and makes people Barmy!

The two youngest were mentally challenged and they were taken away because Stan used to beat everyone in the household. The two eldest left the home as soon as they could. I don’t think both had excuses to not come to his futures.
