Farewell to Corrie 1984 - the year of: the Websters, the final swansong of a Walker (albeit roguish Billy) in the Rovers, Elsie Tanner's far too rushed exit, and the sad loss of Stan Ogden. For me, New Year 1985 marked the beginning of the last decade of the "Golden Era", with Bet as Queen of the Rovers. After that, it was downhill all the way.

I've been binge watching all these old episodes of when life was far less complex than of today. I remember these from when I was a kid. We weren't that far behind in Australia but then they stopped showing it here but then brought it back a couple of years later but by then it had lost its drive and was canned for good.

The scene between Billy and the brewery boss was filmed in a real office - you can tell immediately the difference in film quality between studio cameras and a portable one - slightly grainier footage, different acoustics, long static shots. At some point the kitchen and living room were turned into one room. When originally built houses like those in Coronation Street often had the back living rooms with big ranges for cooking later on the little sculleries at the back were made into kitchens. The front living rooms or parlours were only used for special occasions or sometimes as a bedroom

Rita looks strange in a purple dress on Christmas! Nothing festive!

All this daft "happy families" stuff with the Websters ... Bill worked abroad for years, and Kevin and his minging, feral sister fended for themselves

If Billy wanted to drink in the middle of the night, he should have taken all his drunk friends into the back dining room, not in the pub! Stupid!!

I wouldn’t have gone out with that man if I were Rita. I wouldn’t go out with him since he went out with Bette, and especially after he dumped her! He also had who knows how many women! That’s probably why his wife left him! Rita didn’t care about Bette! Are the pickings that few over there that she must go out with a man that Bette has??! And Rita or Bette never asked him why he’s separated, but he would just lie about it, anyway!
