As a teenager in the states, I was an anomaly for liking this series. I was so fortunate to be able to pick up Canada's CBC TV. The series, during the mid 70's thru the 1980s was pure gold-a perfect mix of humor and drama.

The car raffle plot is a comic masterpiece. The 'obvious' answer - Fred should 'buy' some tickets himself - appeared to have been missed by the writers. Then Jack suddenly suggested it, then there was that hilarious final twist, which also established Percy Sugden as a Coronation Street legend. Thanks so much for these!

I found Terry Duckworth so loveable back then. Such a pity they reversed the roles of him and Jack and turned Terry into the devil incarnate. Terry and Tracy Barlow's personality transplants were the biggest mistakes of 90s Corrie imo.

Yes, he was never the same after his stroke in 1975, and his speech was slurred, but they never bought it into the plot, hence why the character Stan's speech change was never addressed onscreen. 1964-1975 Stan was a totally different character to the 1976-1984 Stan where he was a shadow of his former self.

@@bsaunders5271 I think Bernard was adamant to carry on playing the role. His stroke in 1975 was quite mild but it affected his speech and when he returned it was clear he was struggling with his lines, as said they never bought it into the fictional narrative. I read a Corrie book once and it said the stroke left the actor and character with slurred speech. Also he put on weight quite quickly again afterwards and his health deteriorated.

For sure, totally agree with you there. Annie was such a great character especially with aBet scenes the pomp in her thought and expressions were priceless. I guess with her retiring they are working on and waiting to get Billy back, to turn the rovers upside down. Geoffrey Hughes wnted out as he felt his character should never have been married off. I so miss him and even Marion and especially Elsie. Going through a period of loss for sure with different departures on or off screen. We do get involved in the characters we like of love. Thanks again for all the great drama and laughs especially.

Absolutely ridiculous at this late stage that Granada were still trying to sell the viewers the notion that Stan could actually do a window round, when it was perfectly obvious Bernard could hardly walk let alone push a barrow about the streets. Its one thing trying to suspend reality, but another trying to persuade the viewer of an impossibility.
