The car raffle plot is a comic masterpiece. The 'obvious' answer - Fred should 'buy' some tickets himself - appeared to have been missed by the writers. Yes, he was never the same after his stroke in 1975, and his speech was slurred, but they never bought it into the plot, hence why the character Stan's speech change was never addressed onscreen. 1964-1975 Stan was a totally different character to the 1976-1984 Stan where he was a shadow of his former self.

@@bsaunders5271 I think Bernard was adamant to carry on playing the role. His stroke in 1975 was quite mild but it affected his speech and when he returned it was clear he was struggling with his lines, as said they never bought it into the fictional narrative. I read a Corrie book once and it said the stroke left the actor and character with slurred speech. Also he put on weight quite quickly again afterwards and his health deteriorated.

Absolutely ridiculous at this late stage that Granada were still trying to sell the viewers the notion that Stan could actually do a window round, when it was perfectly obvious Bernard could hardly walk let alone push a barrow about the streets.
