Coronation Street always such good social history - listening to Billy and Bette Lynch talk about their worries about crime at the start. It was a real concern in the 1980s in Britain. It went through the roof and the UK had the highest violent crime levels in Europe.

…interestingly, if anyone doesn’t know, both Lynn Perrie (Ivy) and Liz Dawn (Vera) were established club cabaret performers. Both, despite their talent, suffered from crippling stage fright (this is from one of Paul O’Grady’s autobiographies, he worked with both ladies) 😟

Yes, i knew that about the two talented actresses Also Lynne Perrie has a well known brother ( or twin i think) Who was on tv alot. Hes called Dougie Brown & seeing them together they do look alike Dougie used to be on shows like The Comedians, game shows, the occasional acting gig He was pretty good too They all met on the comedy curcuit & Liz Dawns screen hubby Bill Tarmey also sang, told jokes & was reported to be a fine pianist! Back then, entertainers had to have many strings to their bow But so many started in the clubs I heard that Dougie Brown knew that brilliant comedian Peter Kay & has done comedy writing with him. I really enjoyed watching the talent show at the community centre on Corrie a few years back & Ivy & Vera did their act They were everso good & good singers. Regards 🇬🇧👧

Fred Gee was missing for most of April, May and June, as the actor who played him Fred Feast complained of exhaustion from his heavy workload. He filmed his final scenes in November this year, and didn't get an exit story line, because he let the producers down by departing the show abruptly, without giving them sufficient notice to write one. Producer Bill Podmore was by this time quite exasperated with Feast, and his surly attitude. So Fred Gee left Coronation Street without a bang, but with a whimper - a shame when he was such a popular character for so long. Soon after he left, Bill Podmore realised why he was in such a hurry - he had done a deal with a tabloid to sell his exclusive story for big bucks - and he didn't hold back, criticising his fellow cast members, and spilling many Street secrets. He said many hurtful things. One that caused great offence was his complaint that he was being worked to death, and if he had stayed on the show he feared he'd become 'another Coronation Street cabbage' - a clear reference to recently deceased actors Jack Howarth (Uncle Albert), Bernard Youens (Stan Ogden) and Peter Dudley (Bert Tilsley), all of whom remained in their roles in poor heath/after strokes, and slurred their words. Fred Feast was not, by all accounts, a gentleman - as reflected by his habit of breaking wind violently in front of ladies like Doris Speed (Annie Walker), just before filming a scene! A few years after his abrupt departure, producer Bill Podmore was dismayed to bump into Fred Feast on the street, during a holiday in Jersey. They made polite small talk, then Fred said: "So when am I coming back?" Bill, puzzled replied: "What do you mean?" "Back to Coronation Street," said Fred, bold as brass. "Never", was Bill's terse response. "Fair enough", said Fred, and the two men parted company, never to meet again!

How isn't it obvious to them from her manner and how much she's changed towards him that something serious happened? She's not going to go off him to that extent otherwise. When Audrey knows she still cares more about herself than her daughter and doesn't dump a man who is clearly a creep, perving on his future daughter in law. Audrey got better over the years, but poor Alf seems to have missed most of them. She was such a manipulative user, and he so easily dominated.

🤔Having worked many years in the rag industry; they never leave machinists side by side to work; they can't "chat" if their machines are far apart. Their cadence is slow at best; the machine has to sew continuously without stop. When I see them waltz to the machine with only three or four pieces it makes me laugh. Realistically they arrive with a cart full.

Don’t know if anyone watched Downton Abbey, but what George did to Gail was exactly the same as what Green did to Anna Bates. I suspected he was a wrong’un!

Yes, I thought that as well, I think Julian Fellowes has taken many inspirations from vintage coronation street. There are other similar plots, and I think its very good that Downton Abbey has used so many cast from the street!

But Gail wasn't raped, was she? Sorry, but I don't see the connection with Downton Abbey.

Percy's looking to be relevant, sadly unaware or unaccepting of the fact that what used to be relevant to him is no longer relevant to a lot of people. Change becomes harder as you get older and set in your ways.
