The beauty of Coronation Street in the old days is just how ordinary it was - which made it so watchable! Working class people rubbing along and making the best of what life threw at them, with a few tears but also plenty of laughs! Sadly it lost its magic quite some time ago and today is barely watchable. Even the few stalwarts from the old days can't carry it

I completely concur. These soaps nowadays have gone all US like. Too much ridiculousness. The good old days of Corrie were the realist storylines ever.

Whoever dreamt up the concept of having a boss like Mike Baldwin, a factory and a load of bolshy women in the street... what a genius! The setting for so many brilliant story lines, so natural with so many wonderful actors... Corrie truly at its best.

Watching 1978-1980 is so gripping despite its everyday normality compared to the current Corrie. Great acting, writing, producing and directing. It didn't depend on glam either to carry itself ❤

1980....Ahh this was when Coronation Street was peaking, at it's very best. Great characters, great scripts. Wonderful humour. I can't help but cringe at the attempts at humour in todays show. Everything about todays show is awful compared to the quality of the 70s and early 80s. Excellent 3 hr post, thanks for that but it'll get taken down again, I don't undnerstand why. This is far better to watch.

I stopped watching this in around 84 or 85 ' tho I have intermittantly watched the occasional storyline over the past 30 years ' I can 't relate to the show now ' its so different ' no humor ' very dark and depressing.

The years from about 77 to around 82/83 were the best period from my memory ' I think when most of the original characters left was when it started to lose its appeal ' through checking old episodes on you tube ' it still seemed watchable right through the Eighties ' then come the Nineties I think it took a nose dive.

To each his own bro. This show's never had a peak in my opinion it is a soap after all. Some great characters here and there admittedly but never a consistently compelling show to watch
@zeddeka

I think so much of it is because the society it depicted is long gone. It doesn't really work any more as an idea. The world it started with was when people rarely left the area they lived in, had no money at all, and not much to do other than gossip about their neighbours. The world is so very different now and the kind of characters we saw in episodes in the 60s, 70s and 80s don't really exist anymore. They were familiar types that every working class community had, but are long gone.
@Lytton333
@Lytton333 2 жыл бұрын
@@zeddeka Hence why the current soaps are driven by the depiction of casual psychopathy, dysfunction and militant misery,. In true chicken and egg style, that is the world the makers of such poison both reflect , and want to create. Ironically, modern Salford is a helllish mixture of these things. There are still many who don't leave their area, who don't have that much money, and their gossip is in the form of the modern soap opera tabloidism, which refracts their big-screen TV addicted, crime infested dysfunctional community back to them In that sense it is, unfortunately, realistic'. Today's Ena Sharples would be afraid to leave the house after dark in modern Salford - or even before it.

I think its funny when one of the characters is absent from the show, either on " holiday" or off somewhere for many reasons they always return looking like they've been to a spa & have lost Quite abit of weight! Elsie, before she left to go to Torquay was quite hefty, same with Deirdre she'd packed the weight on & was puffy faced She came back from Blanches rather svelte! You watch when anyone is about to be absent for a month or two Especially if they've become a little " beefy" & see the weight loss on their return! Cheers 🇬🇧👧

@@bsaunders5271 Yes, I think you're right, I don't think she would be contented with a decent guy, I doubt she'd be attracted in the first place. She would question the motives of someone who was caring and treated her well. It wouldn't be about him loving her, but manipulating her for his benefit and enjoyment. And that was her experience, from Mike Baldwin onwards.

2:39:56 This actress was a very sudden addition to the cast - and if memory serves, she left the show just as suddenly! I think the casting director must have had a funny turn, choosing an actress who was such a dead ringer for Deirdre and Renee! There's a spooky scene when Deirdre visits the factory to talk to Mike, and she and this woman are standing face to face talking - it looks exactly like Deirdre is looking at herself in a full length mirror, they're even wearing near identical outfits!

Strange storyline about Len and Rita. In 1979, Len was collapsing through overwork, and Rita was very worried about him. In 1980, he's a lazy slob who Rita has walked out on. She was never a doormat in that marriage. Feminist misandry infiltrating soap storylines often made them silly.

I did find Rita rolled over. She couldn't manage to make a living and ve independent. Getting back with Len meant she had a jib and a house to live in. Some women just aren't self sufficient and need a bloke to take care of them. She carried on as if nothing happened and Len belted her one. Takes all sorts I guess. Rita is just a strange character in general. I respect Elsie more. She doesn't settle and she makes her own rules in her own home.
