Simon really does love his mother but he also loves and adores his grandfather Ken too. That hug or cuddle with Ken is proof of how much he loves and adores his grandfather. Simon admits he doesn't mean to do it. He gets so angry sometimes but Leanne ain't the problem. Simon needs help. Professional anger management help. And Ken will promise his grandson he will be there for him and love him and support him through this. Despite the fact that his father Peter ain't around which triggers some of the anger too.

In fact, back in the 1980s, 1990s, and early 2000s, if you were caught skipping school for no reason in my home Canadian province, Nova Scotia, a child would either face suspension or expulsion from school, or even sent to youth jail in Shelburne, Waterville, or Truro. These days, due to Canada's "Youth Criminal Justice Act", most kids committing criminal offences would be forced to serve Deferred Custody or Supervision Order with jail time if a youth doesn't meet the conditions. I think that Leanne should send Simon to jail for truancy. It sounds weird, but that's what happens in Canada.
