I get the feeling many people don’t want REAL LIFE on KZbin. They want a FANTASY WORLD where vacations are perfect, people speak 30 languages “PERFECTLY” (cough cough), and everyone loses their minds when a white person speaks an Asian language. For all the people that have been misled by those videos, I’m here to help bring us all back to reality.

It's a matter of delivering shallow content or content with substance. Have you ever watched the KZbin channel Bald and Bankrupt? Bald is an English guy (Speaks good Russian) who hides nothing about the perils of travels. Or, maybe you have watched his channel and you feel it's contrived, I don't know:)
@OrientalPearl4 жыл бұрын
Camano man YES YES YES I love his channel. He is THE ONE that inspired me to keep going! His content is so good. It’s so raw and really embodies the experience of traveling and learning other languages! He knows Russian and Hindi which unlike Chinese and Japanese have nothing in common. That means he is a boss at language learning. I want to meet him and shake his hand one day. We need more people like him on KZbin.

That fall / injury and visit to emergency room can you explain the difference you observed in USA and China ?
@OrientalPearl4 жыл бұрын
G RK people go to the emergency room for any little thing in China and it doesn’t cost that much. People are like near death before they decide its worth making that trip on the US. Also there is no urgent care in China and Japan. Your only option sometimes is to go right to the hospital even for small things.

I think traveling a lot growing up, made me realize very early on that these kind of setbacks are simply a part of the traveling experience. Seriously, every single trip I've gone on to went wrong in one way or another and I've just accepted it. It’s all a part of the thrill, but I am fortunate that nothing seriously bad has happened to me, not yet at least. I always remain calm when I'm in a sticky situation, that's how I keep my sanity. I definitely agree with you on the fact that traveling in the media(especially youtube and instagram) is very glamorized, and it gets tiring real fast, you are a breath of fresh air. Really enjoying your content!

This is probably my favorite video that I've seen of you so far. It really shows how strong of a person you are and how strong your Independence has made you. That really shines out in almost every video I've seen you make is that you are a very strong person and you always seem to find a positive from a negative. I admire that in you. It can be overwhelming to be in a place that you're not familiar with or to be alone in a place that you're not familiar with and have to deal with every situation as it arises. I admire your strength in that. By the way tell your boyfriend I said hi I enjoy seeing him in the videos as well. I have heard that Japan has an extreme problem with its people dealing with loneliness and depression. So I am happy for you that you have someone. have a great day and I look forward to more videos from you.

I’m happy that you were able to extend your stay in Japan. As for my own personal horror story, I was in Thessaloniki in Oct 2016 w a few friends. I was scheduled to fly out of ‘Solun in 24hrs but got word that the airports in Greece were going to go on strike. We were able to reach our travel agent and reschedule the flight out from Skopje but we would have to drive the 6hrs overnight to get there. Soo long story short, got back to Skopje but the Greek airports somehow overrode the ticket changes and rescheduled our flight out of ‘Solun! The airport ppl in Skopje said they couldn’t change it. I ended up missing the flight. Fortunately enough, we had a friend in Skopje that we were able to stay the night at and were able to reschedule a flight out from Skopje the next day thru the travel agent at no additional cost. I swear, it’s never fun going thru stuff like that but it’s always a story that adds to all the grand experiences in life! 😅😣😏

One of my sisters went over and lived in China from 2010 to 2013. She,her husband, and daughter lived in Dalian to be there for his job. During that time they were able to travel over a large part of Asia. Most exciting of all, they were able to travel to my dad's and mom's home villages in Kaiping and Taishan. It was a great retrace of the family roots and history. Fortunately, it was a pretty good time to travel. There were no real world crises going on at the time. THANK YOU for this video!!! People really need to understand that things aren’t perfect when you’re traveling and working. I’ve traveled in Asia and South America, and I’ve had scary situations almost every time. In Bali, I got food poisoning that ended up being typhoid. It struck on the day I was supposed to fly home, and I was so sick, I ended up on the do not fly list. I had to stay an extra week. The silver lining was how unbelievably kind the Balinese people were to me. They took care of me like family at my home stay. I will never forget their kindness. I also worked and lived in a favela in Rio de Janeiro, which was at once terrifying, frustrating and exhilarating. I got sick with tonsillitis one day and couldn’t find a clinic who would treat me. I ended up going to the pharmacy and getting medicine from them. There were also times that my roommates and I had to hide in our apartment to avoid gunshots. I’ve run into scary and violent situations in Rio as well, including having to break up a fight between 2 grown men. Despite all of these situations, I wouldn’t change a thing. These experiences made me a stronger person. I love your channel! You’ve really inspired me to continue my language learning!!

My friend (who spoke Korean) told me the man was yelling for us to leave his country and go back to our own country. We ignored him, got on the train , and met many other wonderful Korean people that day. I enjoyed my holiday in S Korea. I’ve been to Japan 2 times & lived in Germany when I was a child. There must be 10's of thousands of people all around the world in travel limbo. We had people that were stuck on the Diamond Princess cruise ship in isolation for two weeks, then flown by our government to Christmas Island for another two weeks of isolation. I know of at least three passengers that tested positive to the coronavirus (but only had mild symptoms) and were flown to the hospital I work at and held in isolation for an additional two weeks. They are all fine now however my questions are; who can afford to not be at work earning a wage for an additional 6 weeks on top of a holiday? I hope our government paid for the flights and picked up the substantial hospital bill!

Oh man, I feel you... I'm German and I moved to Northern Ireland in June. It took me over two months to find an apartment and a job but luckily my partner and I were able to stay at his parents' place here. Then after only 2 months into my new job I started to get sick. I couldn't work anymore and I still can't, no sick pay, no benefits, no nothing. This whole virus situation has made everything even worse. And now I have reached a point where I have to move back to Germany although I really don't want to. I honestly thought my next step was going to be another country, maybe even Japan. And now I have to make a step back, it truly saddens me. I can't afford to stay here anymore and the UK is doing everything they can to make it as hard as possible for foreigners (at least when you're not super wealthy). Especially in NI. I'm fortunate enough that my boyfriend wants to come with me but now Germany has closed borders to foreigners from high risk areas. We have a rental contract here and it's hard to get out of that, we don't know when he can fly, what I should do myself and so on. I feel you.. Coronavirus messed pretty much everyone up. I feel pretty lost atm. It's horrible and I hope we're all going to get through this. You're a very strong person and I admire you a lot. I'm glad I found your channel. I had to apply for a US work visa twice. It was for a big telecommunication project. In spite of full support from a visa agency which had a contract with the international company I'm employed, it was the full burocracy. They wanted to know nearly everything about me. When the officer in the US consulate in Munich/Germany wanted to know the duration of my stay I answered: "My boss couldn't answer this question either, but I hope, it will be a short stay". He immediately approved my visa application after that answer. 😁. All together I had four business trips to the US. It was hard work but also a good experience, especially working with colleagues from all over the world, inclusive a chinese group.

My worst vacation was in Western Washington State. I was on a RV trip. We could not find a place to stop overnight to sleep. It was 3 AM and everywhere was full including rest stops. Finally at 4:30 AM we found a State Park and pulled in. At 6 AM the Park Ranger woke us up pounding on the door. We didn’t pay. We paid and left only to run into a wind storm, a tornado and then a brush fire started from lightning right where we were staying and helicopters were flying over with buckets of water. We went to stay at a mountain RV resort to fish. We got there , opened the door to encounter a bear. The lake was dried up. Nothing to do. I turned on the radio. It was 9/11. But what an experience YOU are having! Stay safe and keep us informed please. I am pleased to hear you can stay for a while. 💜

Girlll, you made me tear up when I saw #5. At the first video I was cracking up laughing, but with the visa stuff I felt like I was putting myself in your shoes since I do want to study abroad. Right now my whole application is up in the air because of everything. I'm glad you're safe and get to stay until thing, cool down, hopefully. Nonetheless, I don't mind "real life" being on KZbin. I don't like seeing too much curated content anymore, unless it's valuable in some sense, like it teaches me something. On the note of your last comment in the video, I actually had a really bad experience on my last trip. I was returning to my parent's home country, Poland. I've been to Poland and back a million times. But like I went with my dad this time, and it just was a nightmare. He really threw me (not literally) under the bus to make himself look good. I was able to meet his side of the family though and I ended up realizing I'm so much more like them than my mom's side. And I bonded with my uncle a lot, he's the complete opposite of my dad. And when I went to my mom's side of the family, I just had problems with catty cousins who thought I was "rich" just for being American. I had a cousin who kind of like harassed me, he just .... Idk I don't wanna get into it but I'm scarred thanks to him. A few good things happened though, the cousins I always found myself drawn to, we connected more and speak frequently now. I had some good nights with one of them. It wasn't all bad, but I honestly felt disassociated from my body for a very long time after coming home because of every little bad thing that happened. I didn't even know I was on a plane ride home. I didn't know where I was at for weeks. I felt like a walking zombie for awhile, and I'm still healing, but I don't think I'd be going back to Poland for a very long time. And if I do, it's not to family. If life allows it, I want to visit many other countries Scotland, Singapore, New Zealand, to name a few.
@OrientalPearl4 жыл бұрын
You and I have the same opinion about the curated content. Thanks for sharing your story. The part where you said your catty cousins thought you were "rich" just for being American reminded me of some comments on this video where people said "oh poor American girl has to go back to America". Two weeks later corona blows up in America. Yeah, good thing I stayed put. These issues are more complex that people can see in the videos.

@@OrientalPearl Yeah I'm actually from Philadelphia, not far from New York. And for awhile, idk if they still are I don't keep up with the news anymore, they were scared of it being the next hot spot like New York became. It's definitely safer to stay put and not put yourself at risk. Definitely, don't pay attention to those comments though, things are definitely more complex than that. Some people will never get it, and you just have to tune them out! There's people even here that are just selfish and self-absorbed. I don't even want to get into some of the stuff that goes on here. It's pretty sad. Also thanks for replying! I don't get many KZbinrs responding back, and I appreciate it!

I was ready to leave Japan the next day. I parked my car with my backpack in the back under the seat. When I got back, 10 minutes later) the door had been broken and my ticket, passport and money were all gone. In those days your plane ticket was like cash and could not be replaced. I got an emergency passport for the embassy. Then I went to immigration. The officer gave we a full one year visa and asked if I would be willing to stay as I now was independent from any company. He introduced me to several part tine jobs that would have earned me 4 times what JET was paying. So the negative turned into a positive.

Thanks for taking the time to explain it's not all fun and games traveling to another country. My trip to Mexico in 1992, the officer that greeted us on the bus from the airport told us to hang onto our passports. If we lose them, we could become a permanent resident of Mexico. (probably in jail) Bomblasted everywhere by Los Tiburones de las calles (street sharks) trying to sell us everything, all the time, but the weather was great. I live in southern New Mexico now, 80 miles north of Mexico. Traveling there is no longer advisable, and shouldn't be considered. The gangs have taken over the country unfortunately. It's not safe to travel there. I feel real sorry for all the poor souls that have to live there, and everyday is challenge just to survive.

Hello Anming! Just subscribed to your channel. First Im glad you found a way to stay in Japan while waiting for the travel mayhem caused by the Covid-19 to settle. I admire your realism in sharing your experiences. Im a Filipino health professional hired by an American company last 2014 to work here in the US due to an actual shortage on my field of work. The fastest was through H1B so I started working here even without a green card, thinking I can start the process for permenent residency while working here. Then POTUS 45 took over last 2016 and issued blanket executive orders that caused severe delays in all processing of green cards. If someone has time I can spend hours sharing all my experiences since then but in short my life here has been horrible for the past two years. Finally I got permanent residency last quarter of 2019. For my love to live and work in your homeland, Anming, I was willing to endure that. God bless America!

Oriental Pearl oh my gosh, do I have a story for you! Late 2016 I was visiting the Nagasaki Prefecture with some friends. I had set up our itinerary and had made plans on the app Couchsurfing for the 5 days we would be there. The first day we set out for the Nagasaki's Atomic Peace Park and Memorial Museum from Sasebo. We were able to navigate fairly easily to the tram station and set off early, Nagasaki being the end of the line. It was an awesome trip until I realized AT THE MUSEUM that my wallet was missing! I thought I'd be devastated, but something inside told me it was going to be okay. Well we had fun, took lots of pictures and after a long day we finally got the Sasebo station and I was chased down by security. They stopped me and handed me my wallet (with everything including USD and Yen) and let me know somebody returned it that morning. They had found it on the counter next to the ticket booth. I hadn't stressed about it, but still felt great relief!! I was so grateful for that person that turned in my property. Goodness, day 2 we were supposed to stay on someone's tea farm just outside of Fukuoka and he was going to be our tour guide the the city and take us out to Hiroshima. The sponser contacted me and informed me that unfortunately it had rained so hard that the road to the farm was inaccessible. Everyone was pretty bummed but instead of going out to the city we stayed in Sasebo and found many hidden gems! We went to a street market and ate fresh picked oranges, hiked many mountains, found out way to many observatories, and after all of that we hiked back to find a hotel. Thankfully I was distracted by hanging lights in a giant room, so I went inside and my friends followed. It turns out a local children's orchestra/choir winter concert was going to be performed. We stayed and I'll tell you, it was quite pleasant! Many of the audience members seemed excited not only for the show, but a raffle during intermission. It was very interactive and the surrounding audience members encouraged us to sing along and do different motions with glow sticks that were handed out. I had a flipping blast!! We found a hotel with one room available and stated there for the night. The third day we killed time before it was time to head back home. Though the trip I'd not go as planned, we made the best of it and still had lots of fun! I hope my story makes you smile!! Good luck out there :)

I know this feeling, it usually drags me down hard. I had to leave the US in January not sure where to go, as I had no place to live anywhere, still don't have a proper home. I wanted to go back to the US in May. But, nope, I won't be able to go back for a long time as it seems. Now I'm hoping for Shanghai, just like you. The EU is publishing a list tomorrow. Countries they open up again for travel. China is currently not on that list. It could be, but only if China lets EU citizens back in as well. We'll see what happens in the next few days, or weeks. My worst travel / visa story is from 20 years ago. My fiance (who is Indonesian) and I planned a wedding in Malta around something called Direct Consular Filing. We had about 40 people from the US and a dozen from Indonesia come to Malta. But just before our wedding they cancelled the Direct Consular Filing program at the US Embassy in Jakarta, so after we got married we had to live apart for 8 months to work out a K3 visa. My concern today is that some people here are with insurance being charged $2,000 for a corona virus test. Since 50% of America has no insurance or extremely high deductibles, I think there are a lot of people who will avoid testing and treatment. And many people have zero sick days or time off and require a doctor's note for unpaid sick leave, so I think most people will go to work even if sick. I think the virus will not be very compatible with our health care system / employment system. I'm so happy for you that things worked out!!

The South Korean website says that Indians are allowed to travel visa-free in Jeju Island of South Korea if they directly fly there. So, I planned an itinerary in which I would give my JLPT in Jeju and then move on to Japan. I had a tourist visa for Japan and not for South Korea. So I bought flights from Mumbai to Kuala Lumpur to Jeju to Tokyo. The immigration at Kuala Lumpur refused to allow me to board the flight to Jeju since they had orders from their officer-in-charge and wouldn't stamp my passport and I got to know from them that the reason probably was that many people were being sent back to Kuala Lumpur who went to Jeju from there. Anyway, I was confident and persuaded them to allow me to travel. I finally got permission to travel. I also had some stupid problem at Kuala Lumpur airport, so I was stuck at a terminal and had to actually go over to the other terminal to board my flight, and I thought that I couldn't go because my transit visa expired, it required a transit visa to go to the other terminal. Also, there was an Indian girl in trouble at the airport who didn't know any English or any other local language, so I also had to help her out and our phone batteries were dying out and there were very few charging ports at the terminal. When I finally landed at Jeju and went for checking for immigration, I got pulled over in Jeju International Airport, and they interrogated me about why I was in Jeju? I told them the truth. They said they didn't believe me and locked me up in a room with some other Chinese, Indonesian and Indian people. I had to wait there until my return flight to Kuala Lumpur. Apparently, their rules are that they have to send back the passenger to where the passenger came from. So I waited in that big studio flat kind of room with an iron gate and officers and everything. This was my first time being in a prison kind of environment anywhere in the world including my country. I was furious and frustrated and annoyed and disappointed in the system. I had access to the internet but the signal was sparse. Although I wanted to write about my experience and send it to the Indian embassy in South Korea and all my social media accounts, I didn't. I don't know why. I got acquainted with the other Indian and Indonesian guy in the room and I got adjusted to the situation really quickly and it actually became fun and comfortable living in that room and also my flight was in like two-three days and almost for free since I only had to pay the ground maintenance charges or something which wasn't much, but the downside is that my Japanese plane ticket got wasted and my subsequent ticket from Kuala Lumpur to Japan was much more expensive than the regular price, and also I had some trouble at the Kuala Lumpur airport regarding the Terminals. The Indian guy was there for many weeks. He didn't have any cash on him to buy a ticket back to wherever he came from and also spent all his cash for food, so I helped him for his food. He said he would ask his friend for the ticket and go back in a few days. I didn't hear from him after I left, and I hope he's fine. In the detention centre, we could also order Korean food from a fixed menu of six items by paying it by myself. The food was amazing! The room was spotless. Guards would come every day to clean with vacuum cleaners and mops. It had an attached bathroom and everything. The women's room was separate. It was like a 2BHK, altogether. It also had a huge LED TV and the room was air-conditioned. There were also power outlets to charge the phones. The only thing that wasn't there was a bed. They would only give a sheet in the morning and two sheets at night and a tiny hard pillow. We had to sleep on the floor. We would eat together with other men and women. If I needed extra cash from my bank card, I would give the card and the security pin to the guard, and they would get the money for me from the ATM outside. Our bags were all outside the room. We could access it with permission. The guards were friendly and caring. It was a different kind of tourism experience. Only the immigration guy and the airport customer care were dicks. The customer care speaks very angrily if you called them to ask any doubts. My South Korean friend got very angry and disappointed when he heard of my situation. I called him, and he wasn't allowed to speak with the immigration officer although he wanted to. Unfortunately, since the Wi-Fi was poor in the immigration office, I could not call up my friend when the immigration officer asked me if I can call my South Korean friend. So I regret not having the internet at that time. So, I recommend everybody to always prefer having a smartphone with the best battery, build quality, connectivity, rather than anything else. All other features in a smartphone are secondary. Never compromise on the essential, basic, primary purpose of a phone/smartphone for anything else and don't cheap out of not buying an international data plan and/or insurance. When you are abroad and in the immigration office or any other difficult situation, you need to be prepared. So always think about the worst and always prepare as much as you can. You can check out my photos and videos in Jeju detention room here: photos.app.goo.gl/5FW7vqe3vHTuxkFU8 In a different incident in Japan, I had lost my passport on the street, which was later immediately picked-up and given to the police by someone. I reported at the police station. The lost and found centre gave me a reference number, and the police gave me a different number. I did not understand why they were different and who I had to ask for my passport. I waited for a month and I would go now and then to the police station to inquire about whether they found my passport. Since I did not remember my visa end date properly, I got worried and went to the Indian Embassy in Tokyo for a new passport. They told me to get some report from the nearby big police station. I went and did so. There they found out after searching for both of the reference numbers that I had, that my passport was found. I collected it. I wanted to thank the person who reported it but I couldn't because they didn't have that person's contact information. All they said is that it was a 28-year-old male and was found half an hour after I lost it. I opened the passport and found that I overstayed by two days in Japan. So, I reported it at the police station, and they took me to the big station where I was interrogated and frisked and photographed and then dropped in a police car for free and out of kindness at the immigration centre. We had a chat in the car about Indian and Japanese police systems and invited them to India. The policemen and women were nice, and they encouraged me to explain my situation properly to immigration. The immigration officials first threatened me to deport and after persuading that, it was not my fault for the overstay and that it was the police's fault, they extended my stay for about two weeks I guess. I tried to go to Jeju once again to see if they would allow me this time, but they didn't let me board the flight at Japan itself. So then I went to Taiwan and then to India.
