I often walk around Ikebukuro in Tokyo, Japan listening in on the conversations of Chinese people around me. They have a sense of security in Japan knowing that the locals don't understand their language. Little do they know that there is a rising number of Japanese and American people learning to speak fluent Chinese. Today, I revisited Chinatown and went to eat some delicious Chinese street food. People were quite shocked when a Chinese-speaking American walked in to chat. It's fun to get these big reactions by acting completely normal.
Below are language learning tools I have personally used for years. Direct purchases of software from these links goes to supporting this channel.

Please, no more mask comments on my old videos. There were barely any corona cases in Tokyo at the time of filming this. Only half of Japanese people were wearing masks outside in early March. Only Chinese immigrants were all wearing them all the time so this video gives you a false sense of the environment in Tokyo at that time. The corona situation has changed a lot now and I wear a mask on camera, when I used to take it off on camera before. Please be aware that this was filmed long before things got serious. Context is key. -Anming

I'm brazilian. My life changed completely ever since I learned fluent english. So much access to new cultures, books and interesting people. Currently studying japanese, and I'm having just as much fun opening this door as I did with english. I can see why polyglots just keep learning. The more someone is different from us, the more we can learn from them. So learning a new language is a great way to find more people.

Naritori Hello!! I’m a native speaker of American English and I learned to speak Spanish fluently. I always tried to begin conversations with people in public. I would start by positioning myself in a situation that would make sense to speak with them. For example, if they were looking at canned vegetables, I would also look and then ask a question, just like Oriental Pearl did in this video! My next recommendation is that you have a “speech” prepared in the language you want to practice. What I mean by “speech” is a few sentences you can tell about yourself immediately that you memorize and it is what you begin the conversation with after saying hello. For example, “My name is Naritori and I hope you don’t mind if I talk in English with you. I am learning English and I enjoy it. I need to practice more.” That way, people know they should not speak too fast and it will not seem weird if you do not understand them right away. You can try to control the conversation by being the person to ask most of the questions, like Oriental Pearl. Good questions like: What is your name? Where are you from? Do you speak other languages? How old are you? (Be careful about this question! I would t ask someone who is an elder but someone who appears more your age, or maybe don’t ask it at all.) I hope this helps a little bit!

Oriental Pearl it’s not so bad in the UK at the mo only the people who have been to Italy or China or one of the other restricted countries are having to self isolate for two weeks. The government are having COBRA meetings (emergency) meetings almost every day and the spring budget (government spending plan) was released yesterday. They said they would allocate 3 billion GBP (I think it was 3) to helping healthcare and sick pay. The next 2 weeks will be the worse as that’s when they think it will reach its peak here. Thank you for your vids and stay safe and well. Lots of love from Leeds, Yorkshire.
