Noam Chomsky discusses the longstanding hostility of the rich to public awareness and understanding so they don't realize they are victims of an economic and political system they need to replace with one that truly serves the public. March 16, 2012 Special thanks to Rev. Rhonda Rubinson of St. Philip's Church of Harlem for facilitating this production. Camera, Joe Friendly.

One day about 10 years ago, I pulled into a gas station to pump gas. Someone had left a little sticker on the gas pump that said, "Read Chomsky." I knew who he was, but put it off. But one day, I bought a Chomsky book & have been a fan ever since. We need more intellectuals like him, who are willing to do the research & educate the rest of us.

@JimboParadox Chomsky never says that you should believe him just because he has studied a certain topic. On the contrary. He says: do not believe me. Go and study this topic for yourself. Chomsky offers advice and ideas. But he would not want you to accept any idea just because it comes from him. His point is: do not just accept what other people tell you. Go and and find out for yourself! Think for yourself!

@JimboParadox but the interesting is that you won't find Chomskys information anywhere else without some rigourous research of your own. and i mean reading several books from authors you didn't know existed from back 200 years ago and then analyzing the impact of their ideas (which you have to understand fully, and compare with traditional developments of the time) with data avaiability from the time as well, and then do this until today. With the fact that alot of the works of scholars that have influence on policy makers on all the major empires in history are simple propaganda, written to convince sectors of their respective countries population that "this is the way foward" while some more technical works indeed carry out the frankness of their methods, whatever they were, makes the task even more daunting at a second glance. So you can see what chomsky is (at least to me). He seems to be a translator between gargantuan amounts of information of which i would have no hope (let alone training) to go through in my lifetime, and my life experience. and i personally think thats very valuable. yes there are biases, thats how the world seems to work on the human level, but damn the amount of sources he cites on most of his lectures and books gives you a direction to begin doing your own research if you have that time. Per example, most of his "opinion" on the imperialistic nature present in the founding of the USA comes straight from the mouth (or pen) of the founding fathers.

Thanks for sharing! Noam Is one of my all time favorite teachers. Mostly it's a state of Crisis in Consciousness our world is suffering from. People are so use to looking outside themselves they can't awaken enough to see that unity amongst all humans. ( The Divinity from within ) We become brutal and selfish not thinking of the others. The parents are raising their children this way. I see it in my daughters school. Problems will always arise more greed, more policies in place less for the majority of the population because people forgot we belong to one another..Because peoples energies are focused on what they see all around them. Everyone is busy today running around. The. Neighbourhoods are empty in the day because people are trying too hard to bite a chuck of what the 1% has. Fancy Vacations, Monster homes, Designer clothes, fancy cars..etc, We have become an external world. If the 99% focused on each other the tables could be reversed to an abundant world for all. Policies would change, people would see the miracles in giving and be happy like our parents before us. Because More never made anyone happy. But It will take a shift in consciousness to make this happen for people to see themselves in others. Thank you. Noella Oneness Canada

always a pleasure to listen to you speak Mr. Chomsky. If you ever see this or someone close to you sees this, I need you to know that nearly everyone I speak too sees what you are saying, and for the most part agrees with what you are saying. It is honestly quite obvious once it's pointed out which is the most frustrating part of it all. And most people I talk too who don't see it, do see it once it's pointed out. If so many people understand, why doesn't it change?

I think you answered my question anyway during the rest of this video. I think I forgot the answer and had to re learn it. That is how insidious the social programming is. The answer is education. And not just in a class room. In life. Point it out as you do, discuss it, show examples, discuss. But still, what do we do about it? How can we fight ourselves?

It was such an eye opener to learn that how Failure by Design system which is a class based system has effected public education system in US. Eliminating educational expensive programs which is much needed by public. Professional administration is ruled by administration which has a mentality of corporate culture. All because the political system is in hands of wealthy who wants to stay wealthy and tax payers are the victims. Time to bring the system where education is not that expensive.

μελετώ - I don’t disagree with the fellow, I was adding more to his comment. Their are many factors why individuals are unemployed. High priced student loan brings it’s perks, however it doesn’t fully correlate with unemployment. Demographics is a broad subject. We cannot marginalized one statistic to support one small critical view point. This is a systematic issue that is entangled with governments, institutions, and civilians. I partially agree with the fellow, however adding more context will give the viewer a much broader view of how dig into hole we are. It will take a massive shift in our economical structure. Thank for your reply. I agree that we will always have those who "can" yet "won't" succeed or attain independence. But the current state of things is making it hard for even the well educated to find or keep good jobs. The mortgage crisis was fueled largely by eased regulations and greed, and states like California are paying for it by cutting funds from various areas. We can't base our values and ideas for success on what robber barons did a century ago, but privatizing ed. is no the way.

Seeing this play out right now. Under Michigan’s Emergency Financial Act, the state has the ability to step-in and help out public schools when they have repeatedly tested poorly (MEAPS etc). Michigan’s plan involves privatizing education. A charter school system set the standard for education and received state money for doing so. This eliminates the democratic process (involving OUR EDUCATION) for communities. It also shifts accountability from the state. The impact on teachers and children is severe. It jeopardizes the future of communities that continue to cycle through poverty. Our schools are becoming more segregated, education should serve as an opportunity--the great equalizer....Michigan's Emergency Financial Act is a double-edged sword, it helped us get out corruption like Detroit's Kwame, but the wording and the power it gives should cause more concern.

I believe he is a very important voice in modern society, a voice that hopes to enlighten. Both hoping to convince others and gleaning from his pioneering research in linguistics, his work is often prone to hyperbole and many times I found myself looking at his quotes and resources referenced to find them not used in the intended tenor. He is a wonderful person to read to find further research, but I would not give him the same hyperbole he tends to in writing.

What happened to the John Houston Film Grant? I was admitted to that Grant program where a choosen few were admitted to the "new Film Major" at Bennington College. The only reason for me attend that collage. The money was taken away, with no explanation... I gave up hope and was fortunate enough to Transfer to the Eugene Lang Collage at the New School for Social Research. Where I discovered academics. I am actially angry at having my hopes dashed on the program that was The John Houston Grant. For no explanation, cancelled. Then Bennington "College" reverted to being well known to be the school with a Dressed to Get laid" policy. If you love your children/child don't make the mistake of sending them off to Bennington just because it is the only Collage they could get into or entered into because acceptance was based on their abilitiy to pay full tuition. Mark these words... just about anywhere else is far more desirable than destroying and mis- consturing ambition... for want, as oppose to , success. JDM

I love the fact that he's such a boring speaker with his monotone but the content of his message is astounding.

200 years ago they may have considered wage jobs similar to slavery but that only tells something about how wage workers were treated at the time.

You make an asinine and ignorant assumption and attempt to offer wisdom based on such. Terrifying.

>"You make an asinine and ignorant assumption and attempt to offer wisdom based on such. Terrifying." @@TheSelfHelpTube You got that triggered and yet you provide no counter argument. Looks like my comment was spot. It is without question that the working conditions for wage jobs in the western world have increased since the 18th century. It cannot be called slavery anymore. You can call it unfair if you want.
