When the Corpsman was in Cal's hidey-hole and he "ejected the magazine" they played the sound effect of a revolver being spun. LOL. Kind of like in the movies you'll hear the sound of someone racking the slide on a pump then showing a double-barrel.

Another suggestion, West would not have brought him straight to his lair. He would have sent him to another location and "run the rabbit", sending him from location to location to detect any tails before abducting him, black bagging him and driving him to the final location.

I was a 2nd Lieutenant once but I was 29 years old. In 1985 during a Reforger Exercise in a Germany with the 4th Infantry Division - I had noticed a Sgt. Major that just loved to go around picking on other soldiers. One day he tried me and after pulling Officer Duty the night before I was in no mood. That morning He came by my bunk and kicked it and said “Lieutenant do you need help getting out of that bunk?” I jumped up and got right in his face. “Sgt Major I have been getting out of my bed many mornings without you and I don’t require your help today or any morning. You got that Sgt Major?” Well he was shocked and didn’t know what to say and did an about face. Never had any more trouble from that Sgt Major. The part where the 2nd Lieutenant was terrified of the Gunny Sergeant reminded be of that encounter with a chuckle.

Listening to the 1st part of this book, I'm reminded of the song "Everyday People," remade by Arrested Devolpement. "Look very hard at who you're stepping to because you might get killed or shot, and it's not worth it." Sherrif Teasle found that out in First Blood when he messed with Rambo, a Green Beret, and now Dante & his crew found that out by messing with Cal, a Marine. Are we learning anything yet?

This was a damn good book. I thought that the sound effects were a nice touch although I've never listened to an audiobook with atmospherics. The one thing I found funny was the music they chose for certain sections like when Cal was talking to Brian and as he(Cal) finally broke down instead of playing something melancholic they chose to use the kind of music that you'd expect during a retributive action sequence.

I'm thoroughly enjoying the story so far and appreciate the extra sounds mixed into the narration to make it that much more real. That said I did get a good chuckle around the 56 minute mark where the nurse checks a Beretta 9mm and it sounds like a revolver cylinder rotating.

Wait a minute...maybe one of you Marines out there can answer this: The conversation between that Gunny and the lieutenant...could that actually happen in the modern era? I know Gunnery Sergeants are something special, but c'mon. Really? I know that senior NCOs in all branches are the people that help turn junior officers into senior officers, but not this way...I hope. Anyway, the other thing that sounds like fingernails on a chalk board is the way the narrator pronounces "Corpsman." He says, "Core-man." Any sailor or Marine knows it is not two words...it is, phonetically, "corman," one word. I know, I know, ya gotta give him some slack...but not six hours worth...not me. JS, Master Chief, U.S. Navy (Ret.)
