While reviewing some recent race photos, I noticed that my forearms are placed quite low. It's encouraging to know that I'm not alone.

As a runner who also maintained a little body building muscle(I think the balance saved me from over running or muscle joint wear) I could always feel "extra energy drain" if in my arms. Yes, arm swing can help the run but it is all a function of speed and distance. I keep arm hands as low as possible, unless I need that "sprinting blades". The shoulder and arms can still swing without the hands up and biceps locked.

You are right about Arm Swing.. I've tried high hand Arm Swing and lower hand arm swing..it's easier for me to breathe when they're lower and i have more of a kick when i run. Plus my arms are big so lower is better

There's a form analysis on how East African elite runners run. Try running with your hands close to your chest (just how they do it). Tried it and it is waaaaay more efficient. There's a breakdown of the logic of it on The Balanced Runner blog.

@@Bluesachwill after my longest runs(not so long at all) i notice exactly the opposite of Chito´s said, i´m a heavy runner and have heavy arms, so carry then low in long runs its a lot more confortable, and doing this i managed to keep a faster pace in short runs too(5 and 10k), but i have to admit its a lot ugly hahaha I decided to try this after, few months ago, when i still running with default arm swing, i found a guy running in low mode sooo fast and look´s so awkward but realy fast (well, for me, anything below 4min/km is fast) and it was the best thing i did

@@Mr0utsid3r I used to do low arm thingie, but it put too much work/pressure on my legs. I think that's why I started to use this method more and noticed myself able to run further at a pace like 3:30km for half marathons etc!! Everyone is different, if your legs are like tree trunks then it's probably better having a low swing and letting them do the work! :D Idk why any running channel doesn't compare different body types tbh because there is probably a science there!

@@Bluesachwill very good point! and very nice pace too! i´m a begginer and in long runs fike half marathons i just complete then and dont try to keep a fast pace yet. another thing i guess play a role is the aestetics side of running, maybe some people just try to mimic a running pattern(like elite africans) because it looks so cool, but they never try make diferent aproachs about it. Here where i live i rarely see someone run different of this elite pattern default

@@Mr0utsid3r Thanks a lot mate! It's been a passion of mine since school :p Running a half marathon in itself is a great achievement (especially for a beginner!!) so congrats to you as well! Keep at it and remember the slower your slow runs, the faster you will get. I think the point about people mimicking pros is so true. I see a lot of seasoned runners in my cross country events running in all kinds of weird arm positions doing really well, so I think you're definitely correct that the aesthetic side is a big part in why so many copy it. Really and truly everyone is built different, and will have better results sticking to what feels the most comfortable. Have a great friday/weekend buddy, and happy running!! :D

I’ve always crossed over, and never knew it was a bad thing. Definitely going to try a more back, and forth motion. Thanks for the vid! Update: This helped a lot! I also tried keeping my arms lower, and running is much easier for me that way.

Can I ask if you ever felt pain on your shoulders? Because when I feel more tired I start to swing cross and usually I feel a horrible pain on my right shoulder if I run for longer than usual.
@derekdalton70064 жыл бұрын
Margarida Ferreira Yes I do, but I do a lot of pull ups with my workout, and I think it’s more from that.

Shoulder movements need to be well positioned when running ❤

I like tucking my arms in, hands slightly in front of me. My shoulders do most the work in regards to "arms swing." The shoulders sway slightly with my rhythm. The music I listen to keeps my rhythm balanced. High arm tuck works for me and allows my posture to remain upright and balanced.

I start to run with my right foot, so should I start swinging my left arm forwards and my right arm backwards? For the start

I always wondered why a few people (they’re usually girls) sway their arms back and forth in front of them when they run, in what I call “sissy running”. Their hands would be in a fist and move in the same direction in front of them. Always looked odd to me.

How about the fact that my last 1/8mi sprint at the end involves biceps and I crush any 5ker on a sprint ; yet for most of the 5K arms are more normal and relaxed :)

Your arms are to low bro. You are a good runner but your arms to low. All world class long distance afrikan athletes have almost the same armswing. There is a reason for that.
@oliverrietz27054 жыл бұрын
Don't think the Armswing should variety. The way you swing and hold your arms while running have a affect of your lower body. With a proper arm techniques it's actually pretty easy to reach almost perfect cadence and a good running Form. You should know this.
