In this video I chow how to properly replace the screen on an HP Notebook model 15-dy1032wm laptop. Todays laptop screens are being assembled with the display screen being adhered to the top lid with tape. Brilliant fix, Tim! Laptops and phones are becoming more and more difficult to service and repair, however I do not believe it is because the devices are becoming thinner, it is primarily the manufacturers attempts to make it as difficult as possible for users and technicians to do what used to be more straightforward and easy repairs. For example, using tape and glue instead of small screws etc. This has definitely increased the chances of breaking screens, bezels etc during the replacement process. This has been one of the most honest and professional videos I have seen on laptop screen replacement. Thank you for your patience in your explanation and demonstration in this video, your efforts are well recognized. A fellow tech.

It isn't a conspiracy, it's engineers making it cheaper. 100%. They do not care who repairs. Two strips of tape are considerably cheaper than a hinge that extends up the sides of the laptops when you are talking about manufacturing 50,000 of the laptops. Follow the money.

FYI. If you can pull the elastic tape out without breaking it, and can keep it straight, you can reuse it for the replacement display.

is it still necessary to unplug the battery [even if internal] to switch out screens? I remember that used to be the procedure to avoid burning out the backlight chip in the motherboard back a few years. I imagine the most time consuming but proper procedure for this screen is to remove the screen assembly then slide out the hinge cover? just wondering.

I've always been decent at computer repair, not much makes me nervous about taking them apart. Until the LCD panel on one of my laptops cracked after me knocking it off the desk. Just one thing . You took out two screws on the top right and left of the top of the laptop at the 4:00 mark . Then later , at the 9:42 mark , the screws are still removed . Then at the 14:04 mark , the screws ARE back in the top of the laptop . Maybe I missed it , but when did you reinstall the two screws on the top left and right of the laptop ?? Other than that it was just as you showed . Thanks again .

Absolutely perfect! Only video i found that showed me the illusive sticky tape behind everything. One note to whoever cant seem to find it. On my laptop (15z-cw100), the tape was only barely visable from below (a tiny tab) and was white instead of black

Thank you so much for this helpful video. Idiot proof - at least from an idiot like me. One quibble: I didn’t find anywhere in the video where you reattached the screws you took out. I got to the end and noticed I had these screws left over. I rewatched the video and the screws are out when you’re taking the tape out. Then, several minutes later, when you’re putting new tape on (the next time that area is shown) the screws are back in. Just a small thing...

IF laptops (and maybe notebooks too???) are currently constructed like this,..IT Techs will TYPICALLY,....NOT BE MAKING THIS TYPE OF REPAIR,...in a 2021,... day to day, real-world, on the job, working environment,... projects/jobs must be completed and deadlines must be met. This repair takes TOO MUCH TIME (too time intensive). So,...IF your IT Department does this type of repair, the client will simply be given a REPLACEWENT MACHINE (Laptop/notebook) and the machine will be sent out for repair or the repair will be made in the Company's designated Computer Repair Lab,..assuming that your company's IT Department does Laptop Monitor Repairs and Replacements. It might do them or it might NOT do them. In many environments Laptops and Notebooks with defective/non-working monitors are JUST REPLACED with another Laptop or Notebook (and the Laptop or Notebook with the defective monitor is sent out for repair).

Is there a way to make a new HP 17 screen easier to open and close? Some sort of lube or a way to loosen the hinges? Mine is so stiff I am pretty sure the hinge is going to break in no time. I am trying not to close it. I leave it in the open position on my desk after I'm finished working on it.

Thank you so much for making this video - the black tape would have thrown me for a loop without your prior advice. I got both tape strips loose without either breaking thankfully - screen did come with one bad pixel but customer bought the part so I'll let him ask the vendor about that before I button it all back together - on far right side so should be no issue anyway - I'm thinking to use a few small dabs of RTV silicone in place of the black tape. Will stick but be a little more forgiving than the tape. Have you tried that before?

I just cut small strips of the used black tape and place that near all 4 corners. That is well enough to support the screen.

No black tape behind mine. I bent the sides trying to pull the goop off. I had no luck until I used a heat gun. I wish I had seen this video. The other guy had me taking the hinge screws out, which stripped trying to get them rescrewed. Apparently they are incredibly fragile and barely screw in. So now I have a working screen, a non working right hinge and the black perimeter veneer won't snap back in because of the wire sticking out. I do not get these hinge screws and how easy they get ruined with so little torque. The hinge is the biggest priority. I can tin snip off the bent side metal and hot glue the veneer on. But I don't think super glue and epoxy will seat these screws enough since the tall screen has lots of mechanical advantage.
