In a way, that's actually true. Darwin's book IS outdated, because it lacked all the information we know today, and Darwin knew he didn't know it at the time. The bible isn't outdated, because it's a forever expanding and morphing fantasy story about rape, incest, genocide, slavery, mutilation and incest that didn't have an equal until 4chan. Also, it has incest, just so you know. The bible. Also, 4chan... we are sick species, and we're long overdue for a new boundary layer...

An animal with feathers and scales is ridiculous! Oh, wait. Birds have scales on their legs and feet. Archaeopteryx had teeth (no bird has true teeth, although some have tomia), a bony tail (no bird has a bony tail) and feathers. And that was just the first species we ever found of avian dinosaurs, there have been many since. A fish turning into a frog is ridiculous! Oh, wait. By all diagnostics, a tadpole is a fish: it has no limbs, no hips, no lungs, it has a two-chambered heart, it has gills, and it excretes nitrogenous waste as ammonia. And yet it metamorphoses into a frog: limbs, hips, lungs, no gills, excretes nitrogenous waste as urea, and a three-chambered heart. And all the while it is metamorphosing it eats, grows and survives. That there could have been a sequence of descendants leading from fish to frog is not impossible, not even when fish have two-chambered hearts and fish have three-chambered hearts. Oh sorry Bil. Just a thought, what does that say of Christianity, or, hell, even Christians (or theists in general)? Survival of the fittest, i mean. I know it's supposed to apply strictly to biological evolution, but I've found it to be the case with almost anything relative to its environment. Btw, I'm not trying to sneak in the truth of Christianity (cuz there's barely any to speak of), I'm just noting how Christianity has survived and how Christians continue to survive and thrive. I guess it adapted to its environment the best, constantly mutating to fit the modern cultural ethos, even if most of its "intellectual limbs" have become vestigial sophistry at this point.

My favorite thing about this pastor's speech(sermon?), is that it's a virtual certainty that the vast majority of people in his audience instantly realized he had no idea what he was talking about, the moment he started claiming that things like calluses and sun tans are examples of(or supposed "evidence for) evolution. It's makes me smile to think about how even his own flock must have been embarrassed by/for him, and probably ceased to take him seriously from the very opening of his speech.

One of the biggest shockers for me, back when I was still a creationist, something that troubled me, was back in 1998 when I learned that the Human Genome Project found a relationship between humans and rats. Yes, rats. That was a bit tough for me to accept, at least back then. It wasn't until I watched Mission to Mars that I heard that the genetic differences between man and ape was less than three percent genetic material that I really began to question creationism entirely. Obviously, I wasn't going to take a movie's word for it, but it made me wonder and realize the implications if it were true: that evolution would be factual and the Genesis account would be a myth.

It's not a myth you mentioned; Genesis actually contains two legends of the Jews, which embodied the tradition of the northern and southern groups. When faced with the two stories during the composition of genesis, they decided to include both legends carefully woven together, in order to please both factions. See Who Wrote the Bible? by Richard S Friedman, for a full explanation.
@QueenBoadicea
@QueenBoadicea Жыл бұрын
@@jeanettecook1088 It wasn't that carefully woven. One part states that god created man and woman together. Then a latter part states he created Adam first and then created woman from his rib (which seems like a creepy, careless and clumsy method for making a person). Talmudic tradition mentions a first wife called Lilith who has an entire mythos revolving around her. It's a rich and fascinating story, involving annoyance at Adam's demands in sex, flying off to an island, sleeping with demons and rejecting three angels sent to her to persuade her to return to Adam (he was lonely after she left and asked god to bring her back) and threats to kill 100 of her children every day if she didn't come back to her husband. Most of that gets ruthlessly cropped out, leaving us with ambiguous passages in Genesis about Adam, Eve and a talking snake that leave readers scratching their heads.

That last sentence reads as "perfection is unattainable, improvement is wasted effort", which sounds fatalistic and absurd. We all have unfounded beliefs that we shelter beyond our investigative means to ensure they're never proven wrong, comforting lies, but we shouldn't. The agency that understanding provides beats a lack thereof any day of the week. The religious might believe their respecive faith had a patent on not wanting to leave people behind, but they'd be wrong.

@@bazingaburg8264 Without superstition and fantasy you will never get myths and legends the build up a culture, you will never get works of art like the Harry Potter and the Lord of the Rings. You will never get genuine inspiration. Superstition is ingrained in our DNA, It is a very useful survival mechanism. No amount of rational thought is going to change that. And we are better off having it rather than not having it. I would be willing to go as far as to say that the individuals can become rational but the group can never obtain rationality for any length of time. @@PAIP_Studio I wholeheartedly agree with you on most of that, foremost that superstition is baked in by evolution. The ancestors that didn't laugh off rustling in the bushes as "must be the wind" lived long enough to procreate and get us here. We're pattern recognition machines, like all life and, unless we conquer death, i see no evolutionary benefit to losing fear and wouln't want us to. I don't see seizeless rationality in our future either, we're primates after all, jealous, horny, hungry. Groups may not change their minds but they're made up of individuals who very much are reachable. Aron adresses an ideological pack-leader here and, while not all members may clock just how badly, some eventually will realize their leader got whupped. Baseless beliefs can feel amazing and provide hope where none other might be at hand, but they will destroy us if we let them. (Ok, who's fatalistic now? 😅 Also, you see what i did there.)
