I would hope that the manufacturer of an $800 reel could have figured out how to get it to lay the line properly, instead of making their customers jury rig it themselves at home. Crazy!

I agree, that's horrible for what that thing costs. It seems to me that is it a problem with the gears that drive the piston--perhaps the spool is pausing too long at the top and the bottom of its oscillation. I wonder if a spacer washer under the spool might help???

Total crap My Stella’s are perfection. Why piss away that kind of cash and have to that to a reel. By a PENN, shimano, Diawa and your done. Shame on you van stall, your not worth capital letters

I was going to buy one of those reels until I heard about this. Thats unacceptable for a $800+ reel, I dont care what their excuse is.

They realesed the x series where the line goes Chris cross and lays it perfectly flat. the only thing that bothered me in this was the amount of line that was on the reel. there was only like 150-200 yards while it can hold 400+

800 $plus reel and lays the line like that?here in argentina we have a reel, "escualo",that´s from the 60s that is just like this van staal and lays the line just perfect,it uses a worm gear

hi was watching the video on removing a reel seat. should I take the same steps the cut off a all aluminum reel seat? any help would be greatly appreciated

English casting champion and author John Holden wrote that one should reel line onto the spool 1/4 to 1/2 full,then seeing where the line was being laid,that is,if bunched up forward or rearward or in the middle,to then wind on line by hand until perfectly straight across or slightly tapering forward.Replace the spool and wind on line as you normally would. I've done so with Penns, Daiwas and others, doesn't take very long and no elaborate setup required. I still wouldn't pay what they ask for this reel.

if I completely empty spool by a good casting and normally retrieving, will I experience this issue again ? It seems a temporary solution to me. whats the idea behind this application?

Line lay issues? With all the praise heaped on VS I'm surprised this isn't mentioned more often. Seems like a major design flaw

SHABAZZ T I was going to go with a penn, but for a 5 vs a VS150, the 150 weighs HALF as much as the penn. HALF!!! Then it was a no brainer. FWIW I got my VS for $150 less than retail because of the new model coming out.

Nice work. Anyone with a Visa card can pay for a fix, mostly 'cause they don't have the confidence or time to try. Both time & confidence being the two common features common to the 10 % of fishermen who catch 80% of the fish. Tight lines.

So if a big fish nearly spools me to the end of my line on my Van Staal reel ,it should make it flat with retrieving all the line back on the loaded fish maybe..lol
