I've had a full set of natural gut in my raquet for nearly seven months and it's still going strong - no noticeable loss of tension, still feels soft and good for my elbow. With non-natural strings I find they lose a lot of tension after around 6 weeks/2 months and I need to restring as I start hitting the ball long - still haven't reached that point with the natural gut. More expensive initially but it definitely seems to outlast synthetics, for me anyway.

I find in an 18 x 20 string bed, a full bed of gut works great. Good power, control, touch and spin. In a 16 x 18 or 19 a poly hybrid works better for control and touch. I love serving with gut as I feel it cups the ball much better than polys.

I love my set-up of Lux or VS natural gut mains and a smooth round poly cross at 55/52 lbs. The only negative is the durability. I snap the gut in 6-7 hours. Feels great while it lasts. Have been tempted to go lower tension full poly to keep costs down, even with frequent stringing to keep it fresh would be much cheaper. Maybe one day I will try it.

I use VS natural gut @ 55lbs and a poly @ 52 lbs in my Prince Phantom 93P 14x18. I tried many polys full bed at different tensions but ultimately nothing compares to this setup and it lasts 1.5 to 2x longer than a full bed of poly

I use X One Bi-Phase. Not as soft as gut but pretty close. Gut is great but super sensitive to the elements - sweat, change in temperature, rain, etc. I wish I could get more durability out of gut. Klip had some coated gut strings but the feeling not anywhere close to VS.

I liked the nat gut especially when using 95sq racquets, but now with a more modern style racquet a good co-poly does the job just fine. Also nat gut is annoyingly sensitive to the weather.

i play an 18x20 Dunlop 98 inch head frame, use VS in the mains, ALU Power or 4G in the crosses. I can string that set up at 40-44 lbs and get great playability, comfort and power. The density of the string pattern really cuts down on the wear on the gut, as well. If you really want to use gut, and not spend a fortune on restringing, look towards using an 18x20 pattern. with a hybrid string set up, you will get all the spin you need. i can get 20 hours of quality play out a typical string job, as well.

I’m in the middle of an experiment. Two of the same rackets, both strung at 53lbs. One is hybrid Babolat gut mains and ALU rough crosses. Other is Solinco Vanquish multi. Gut hybrid has a little better control. Multi has a little more power. I like a soft string and like the feel of both. But after playing seven 90 minute sessions with both, the gut hybrid only lost 2lbs tension while Multi lost 5lbs. That and the gut hybrid strings not going out of alignment like the multi does makes the extra cost worth it to me

I use vs gut crosses and 4g rough mains in my aero vs and I love it. Holds tension really well, plays very nicely and softens the aero vs up just enough to help my fragile arm be able to play with it. Damn expensive string job though even though I buy wholesale and string myself. I can’t find a multi that imitates it anywhere close.

@@rf10is yeah I know I could but the racket works too well for me so I’ll end up sticking with it, my games all about spin and I’ve tried head extreme tour and vcore 98 and they just don’t play as well as the aero for me. I’ll probably just buy a reel of 4g rough to soften the blow a touch. At least I string myself so that cost is taken out!

I play with hybrid setup, gut/poly. Babolat VS (50lbs winter/52lbs summer) with Solinco Tourbite (52lbs w/54 lbs s on Yonex VCore 95. Trying to switch to a different (non shaped) poly, but still a (very) stiff one. Want to compare how much longer will the main strings last and if any playability will change. The string setup is more expensive, but don't have any arm issues and love volleys and slices with it.

Do you have your favorites for poly cross strings with gut mains? What are some of your favorites. Most people don't want to spend $20. a set for Luxilon like the pros. I am looking for a poly cross that marines well with natural gut to give you maximum playability. Right now I am using Hyper-G 20 gauge poly. The Solinco Hyper-G 20 in my gut / poly hybrid was arrived at by trying every other string in the Solinco line in 18 or 20 gauge (if available). Prior to that, I play tested numerous slick smooth rounded polys (dozens) to see which ones performed best. My top five previously priced under $14. a set were (in order): 1) Yonex Pro Tour FIRE 1.20; 2) Weiss CANNON Silverstring 17; 3) Kirschbaum Pro Line EVO; 4) Mayami Hit Pro 1.25; and, 5) MSV Co-Focus 17L (1.18). Just ordered Tier One GHOSTWIRE and Grapplesnake Tour M8 (which I know you like a lot). What would you top three polys be for cross strings with gut?

Fake gut like strings or multis can be used in hybrids with poly rather successfully. Fake guts like Tecnifibre NRG2 are close enough for use in a hybrid. Bublik even uses a multi, forget which one, in a hybrid in his ezone and I'm sure there are other examples. Durability in terms of how quickly it will snap is better than gut in many cases but durability in terms of lasting 40 years and still being playable.... I doubt it.

Way, way too personal. All such a list will ever be is one that highlights the personal bias or a random selection from the one speaking. No matter how you go about it, it's all personal, rackets and strings. One effective way to narrow it down is to be very precise with what it is you want, and it helps to have reference points from experience.

I am a solid 3.5 and love to experiment with my racquets and strings. After playing around for a number of years with different string setups, nothing plays as well as hybrid setup of VS Touch mains and Luxilon ALU crosses @ 52/52 . I can’t stand to play with anything else at this point and any poly bed feels like I’m hitting with a piece of wood. I tried many setups before settling for Babolat VS NG mains 27kg(26kg winter time)/Luxilon Fluoro 25.5kg(24.5kg winter time) crosses. It lasts me for 20-25 hours easily and it is extremely comfortable (and constant from the machine to string snap). It even happened that poly snapped before NG one one occasion. :) I started with full bed of polys but that was too inconsistent and stiff. It would start as an OK setup but would be dead in 5 hours tops. Then I tried multifilament in the mains but that would break in 5-6 hours with poly crosses so it became too expensive. Plus, NG is so much more nice to play with. ;) I'm not a professional player for sure :) so I don't have to think about the price of the setup. I want to enjoy my hobby to the fullest!

NXT is a terrible main string for any setup, in my opinion. I use gut for mains in my PS 6.1 95 classic, and for me it’s way more cost effective than any other main string for tension maintenance, playability, and durability. I find that the playability and control is good and very predictable even after the string has shredded and frayed till near breaking point.

Money. Answer over. Paid by Head, so he throws that crap on there. He also gets custom free racquets. He generates money. I play with a similar setup, because I can afford it. The hindrance of restringing is my only deterrent. I usually have 6 racquets with Babalat VS or Wilson's Champions Choice in the Mains. You throw the other crap in the crosses. Money and time os the only reason you wouldn't. So called experts at the Tennis store, enjoy refusing to put Natural gut in the mains and I insist. We kills millions of cows a day, as a species, I think two can be found. Humans are a dangerous bunch. More interested in his POA girlfriend than him. Most used to use Gut in the mains and ALU Power in the crosses. That many racquets. Not wasteful at all.
