I can’t believe I’m doing this, but- Correction: you do not need to say “gin martini”. A martini is a gin cocktail. That would be like saying a “whiskey old fashioned”. The only reason one would need to say the name of the alcohol is if it deviated from the standard, i.e. vodka martini.

It’s because dumb bartenders don’t know that. So he probably has to order it that way. As a gin drinker… it’s so common for bartenders to not know that. It gets really annoying trying to explain it shouting over the music. So we just say gin _______. “Gin collins, gin martini, etc.”

"Whiskey old fashioned" is also a little simplistic as it's specifically rye whiskey, strictly speaking (or commonly with bourbon, which is of course not strictly whiskey). Indeed, better to specify your cocktail to an ignorant bartender than get your drink wrong, but as you say, martini, is indeed a gin cocktail.

Can you just imagine if jackals padded THEIR contributions here on KZbin, the chaos that the jackal community would be sucked in to? And not to mention if we had typos, and grammatical errors and were drinking alcohol while constructing our well thought out commentary on the subject at hand. Ah yes, alcohol - that sweet sweet sweet sweet sweet sweet sweet sweet nectar of good times and happy feelings - although alcohol is actually a depressant. @@jessshepherd1843 Not at all, the mistake was him writing the second “correction” letter, and in true E.B. White fashion, he didn’t sign it. Let me explain: As many E.B. White scholars will tell you (myself being one of the top two White scholars in the world), Mr. White was obsessed by the concept of “plausible deniability” and the concept in literature known as “noble intent” or “noble intention”. White was absolutely paranoid putting his signature on letters and documents. He knew that because of noble intent, once he committed his signature to something, he would have to own whatever the consequences were of signing his name (good or bad). Because of noble intent or intention, E.B. knew he would have to accept the credit society would attribute to his work (good or bad), whether he intended to write what he wrote or if he intended something else entirely. Regardless if it was accolades or condemnation, if he put his signature to something, he now was not only legally responsible, but culturally responsible for signing his name to something. Seth having one signed and one unsigned letter, is absolutely White’s brand. In my expert opinion, I have absolutely no reason to doubt the authenticity of either of those letters. Although it should be noted, that he is only responsible grammatically or otherwise for the signed letter Seth has. Make no mistake, this type of debate over his letters would tickle E.B. to no end, because he never signed anything that he wasn’t 100% sure was the correct decision.

Sorry if this is weird, but I just wanted to let you know that libraries usually have a massive selection of audio books that you can listen to for free if you get a library card with them! My local library does and I LOVE it because I get migraines a lot and audio books help keep me entertained when I’m in too much pain to do anything besides lay in my pitch black bedroom haha. You said audio books were getting expensive so I figured I’d let you know, because I never knew libraries had audio books too until someone told me about it!

Don't pay for an audiobook if you can't afford it. But checking it out from the library supports the author (and publisher, and library!)

CORRECTION: 2 weeks ago you quoted a jackal as saying “eggs would be bursting from her thorax” in reference to Charlotte the spider. Spiders do not have a thorax, they have a cephalothorax where the head is fused to the thoracic segment. Secondly, the cephalothorax is where the legs connect to the body. If a spider’s eggs were going to be bursting from anywhere it’d be the abdomen. As an entomologist and a jackal I demand this be corrected. Stop running from this one Seth, you coward.

Also, the same people who are passionate enough about insects to make a career out of them generally extend that passion to arachnids and myriapods as well. So in any group of entomologists or in an entomology class, there’s a lot of spider talk as well.

You can receive a scanned copy, but you'd never be allowed to leave with the physical document. That's a huge security risk. The letter should have been a copy of the original if you got it from an archive.

Whoever told you that you don’t say the T in Leitmotiv was trolling you. It’s German, and you do absolutely say the T. (And because German has fortition of coda sounds in the last syllable of a word, the /v/ in “Motiv” turns into a [f] when spoken. This is the cause of the spelling “leitmotif” in English. However, in the German plural: ⟨Leitmotive⟩, the /v/ stays lenis: [ˈlaɪ̯tˌmoˈtiːvə]. And yes it’s fortition, not devoicing. The German lenis/fortis distinction just happens to line up with voiced/unvoiced in the standard dialect.)

Hi Seth! I remember when you said "the given" in a recent Corrections and claimed it was a math concept; I'd thought to myself that "a given" is a philosophical turn of phrase but didn't correct you since I don't know much about math. However, after seeing the Corrections from yesterday I am here with my first correction! While "given" can mean many things to many people, I'd say that given (lol) the context you used, it would be philosophical in nature since you are speaking about what one knows or ought to know, which is the philosophical field of epistemology. You might be interested in some epistemological readings about how we know what we know, the "myth of the given" expressed by some philosophers of the mind (I'm reading Sellars' Empiricism and the Philosophy of the Mind & McDowell's Mind and World for a seminar right now), and what we mean by "the given" (i.e., knowledge that is given without needing other internal or external conceptual knowledge, experience, etc). (And yes, if I were speaking to you I would have said "that is" and not "i.e." but once I had someone say the actual Latin "id est" to me...I took two years of college Latin and knew what they meant, but even I thought that was a move worthy of the most jackalest of jackals). I've been keeping up with Corrections since the beginning, but I never jump into the fray, however it's bothering me: items that are on sale are often placed at the front of the store right at the entrance, so if tuna were on sale it would be one of the first things you'd see. Jackals didn't pick up on this because, like Seth, they also never go to the grocery store, or anywhere else for that matter, in person.
