I worked as a Correction Officer for 28 years in Pennsylvania. This tray is a typical tray. A bag lunch was served to the inmates when the jail was on lockdown, they missed a meal due to an outside trip to a doctor, or being transported to a different jail. They had 2 bologna sandwiches, a couple of mustard packs , an apple and a milk. Diabetic inmates got a diabetic bag in the evenings before evening lock down. They had graham crackers and a fruit, like an apple or pear. There were special diet trays for some inmates, and for Muslims there were Ramadan meals during Ramadan. No pork was served and very seldom beef was served except for beef liver and onion day. The trash cans in the dinning hall got full real quick those days. The only thing I really didn't let leave the dinning hall were bananas. The inmates would flush the banana peels and clog the toilets up. The plumber would have to be called to unclog the toilets. I never worried about bread or cookies. Although, some inmates made wine from the bread. Some bread, sugar, drink mix and jelly will brew you up some hooch to get drunk on.

You wouldn’t believe how many have claimed I am lying about what is normal or typical. Most COs don’t want to get in a use of force over food, most don’t want to be taken advantage of either. A lot of things go into it…food means a lot in institutions where inmates don’t have a lot. Make sure all inmates get what they are supposed to have, don’t short the PC inmates…watch the trustees they could target PC inmates for a verity of reasons. Food / Tray pass needs to be taken seriously.

@@UniversitySecurity I once was pulled to pick trays up that I didn't pass out. I had no idea what was on the trays. I found out they had ketchup packs on the trays. When I got to the one cell the inmate was what i thought getting sick in the toilet. He was vomiting red stuff up. I stopped and went down to call medical to come up. He really had me fooled. He was laughing and calling me a fool. The other inmates attacked him because if there was someone getting sick for real, they didn't want me to think they were fooling me also. I wrote him up for disrupting normal business of the institution. He got another 15 days in the restrictive housing unit.

This is pretty accurate to what we served. We were required to pick random trays and eat the same food that inmates were. It wasn’t the best food I have ever had but it was far from the worse. Having served in the military, our daily was comparable at times to what was served in our jail. Some people have experiences in facilities with absolutely horrible food….It has to be nutritionally there, it doesn’t have to taste good. That’s a reality. People seem to have this concept that their experience in prison or jail from other parts of the country must be how it is everywhere else. I can tell you we did NOT serve blended food combos or meatloafs which are served in some facilities in violent / suicide prevention cells. Our Sheriff started his career in corrections and made it clear he wanted to maintain a certain standard.

Like the military, correctional institutions don’t always provide the best food….Or even commercial quality food. We were middle of the road in the inmates eyes…I thought it was fairly decent…Something along the lines of public school food in our local area.

Corrections officer is a misnomer. It's nothing more than a politically correct way of saying prison guard. They guard the prisoners, but they don't actually correct anything.
@UniversitySecurity
@UniversitySecurity 4 ай бұрын
Jail's in the United States are primarily pre-conviction / pre-trial confinement. The historic term of jailer does not encompass or convey the duties of a modern-day Jailer assigned deputy or Corrections Officer...Sworn or Non-Sworn Officers can be assigned to the facility. So where does that leave us? Prison Guards work post-conviction. Usually work around the same inmates for years. Inmates in jail are not convicted and come and go. So I am not sure I agree with your assumption or if it is easy to assign a title to the Officers that fulfill these roles. Rehabilitation isn't easy in a jail setting....GED programs usually exist but the inmates can come and go as I stated before finishing their programs. Not a heck of a lot of success. They do learn basic janitorial skills, maintenance / landscaping, and kitchen work. It's not much but some do try to use it as a job experience.
