Fun Fact: Usually in movies the actors do their shots first and then the animals are cgi'd later. By doing so, the animals are cgi'd to be slower than normal to match w the actors speed. The director SS Rajmouli instead decided to cgi the animals first and in order to create a reference point for how fast they were going he used lasers. The actors had to react accordingly. By doing so, the speed of the animal is more realistic. The amount of dedication from the director is insane.

I consider RRR a masterclass on film making. They really knew the tools available to them and utilized them all. Miniatures, drones, sets, blue screen, cgi, crowd and set extensions. Old school stuff like Rahm on the bridge waving down, he's up on a cherry picker with like 5 feet of bridge railing in front of him. And the build out the world around him, but they have something practical to match lighting too, and you get real depth. You never lose focus on where people are, no matter how chaotic it gets. And some of the stuff in there you really do question if its vfx or not. The barbwire show in the street, the rolling tire on fire. The train. So much stuff.

One thing that never gets mentioned on this channel is how VFX artists in places like India (and all over the world) are worked into the ground for very little pay to create these shots. I don't think Corridor has ever discussed how companies like Rhythm and Hues went bankrupt because of how thankless this industry can be, especially since they won the Oscar for Life of Pi in that same year. There's too many struggling artists out there, this shouldn't be acceptable.
@charanteja_2 жыл бұрын
Yes, I know VFX artists are paid less around the world, but in India it is pretty much the market standard (6 -12 Lakhs per year, $10K-20K per year). I mean, if you want to pay by US standards, then even software engineers in India are paid 1/10th of what they would earn in US for the same piece of code to the same application for decades now ($10K-15k per year). I mean the Tech industry in India is completely cheap than any other nation, that's why many go invest in India. It would be better if the MNCs pay up suitable amounts by international standards for the tech industry in India (atleast half).
@handdrawnbink2 жыл бұрын
@@charanteja_ Completely true. It doesn't change the fact that $10K-$20K is not adequate compensation for the effort of work required. It's not a realistic salary for the expertise and the time required. Not by a mile. VFX artists deserve better.

@@handdrawnbink Actually given that cost of things are a lot cheaper so by indian standards you can live pretty comfortably with tgat salry. ( I have 12 lcs p.a salary). But as tge economy develops and more hifher budget films get made so the salaries will also rise.

I went to school with a handful of friends who went on to become professional VFX artists.. 2 of them don't last at a studio more than 2 years. BONKERS resumes, but they're like the sweatshop labour for compensation VS. what ends up on screen in the majority of mega world-wide blockbusters these days. It sounds like classical myth or folklore, and there are apparently a lot of reference to mythology and cultural tropes in there. From what I've read it sounds basically like a fairy tale, all of it's story beats have a purpose, and in the tradition of storytelling it is presenting that story in an exciting and beautiful way without worrying so much about deeper logic. It's just something amazing that happens at a time in a place. It sounds great to me and it probably wouldn't have really grabbed my attention without this corridor crew video, but I've been pretty into folklore lately and it's cool to see it true to form and style in a very original modern film. I'll be going into it like an epic poem or something.

Some friends and I were in Austin for an event that got cancelled ~3 weeks ago, and that night one of the Alamo Drafthouses was playing RRR for just that night, so we all went. Easily the best theatrical experience I've had in years. Many moments of "bad CG", but like how can you even fault it? Like you said, they play to their strengths and allow the CG to be "bad"/unrealistic in parts where it's just a fun time and it doesn't matter, but it's always superb and non-intrusive during important character moments. Super super well done. And to boot, a movie that has something to say. Disney could never.

Glad to see you've mentioned an important point at 12:47 - Delayed title card. Instead of conventionally placing it at the start, we are teased by three different "fake" title cards - Story, Fire and Water. Those perfectly explain the context and build a sense of suspense and when we are completely engrossed in the sheer brilliance of the bridge scene, we get the title card out of nowhere and that was such a treat to watch on the big screen. I can't even imagine how the director was able to turn a seemingly insignificant title card into such a satisfying, euphoric scene to watch. Unreal stuff!!

@@knowitall1005 I agree that most of the North Indians don't know that it is a fictional story based on two real freedom fighters but in the movie the climax scenes were inspired from Indian history where Sita Rama Raju is shown as lord Ram and Bheem is shown as lord Hanuman because Bheem 's character is slightly similar to lord Hanuman's character that is very powerful yet innocent and also if you observe the BGM in the climax ( Ramam raghavan) and some dialogues exactly depicts the history. From the bottom of my heart, thank you @Corridor Digital. For many reason, but here are the two biggest ones for me: 1. For opening my eyes to the hard work, creativity, and craft that goes into visual/practical effects in films. Without you, I wouldn’t be giving these professionals the admiration they deserve. 2. For helping me accept my pride for Indian films. I enjoyed them, but whenever I tried showing friends they could only remember the “absurdity” from it. Having watched your videos for about a year now, seeing TV shows or movies has never been the same… in a good way! I can appreciate all the details I was blind to before, I can put words to why certain scenes stand out so much, I can explain how some shots work better than others. And I am in no way involved with the film industry! It’s amazing how your channel has the unique ability to teach everyone from any level of knowledge and from any field. As I sat in theaters (2 times) watching this movie, I genuinely felt it was a more enjoyable experience thank to the “curtain” you guys pulled back on film making. Thank you! Growing up, it was hard for me to share my love for Indian cinema with my American friends around me. On one hand, I knew I liked the movies for a reason. But on the other hand, I could see how they would laugh at the movies for being so absurd at times. However, your series shining on spotlight on Bollywood (and all the other -woods) helped it finally click in my head! The movies aren’t trying to compare to other western film, it’s a different genre. Action with more of an anime feel, a bigger suspension of belief for bigger payoffs. Your work means a lot to me, and I hope you guys can continue for a very very long time. Thank you!

I've been to movies with all types of crowds in my 50+ years of life, but since I started going to Tolly and Kollywood movies I've never experienced so much joy. My friend and I are almost always the only non Indian's and the crowds have always been welcoming (unlike other foreign film crowds). They are puzzled sometimes asking why we are there but in Triple R's case when I told people I had been waiting 2 years for the movie, they lit up. The only thing I've never gotten is confetti cannons. Boo Cinemark. Even though Triple R and Rajni films have cost me as much as $30 US, because of the movies and the crowds, the experience is worth every penny

By the way, you're right about CG fire needing to look overexposed, but ONLY in SDR. In HDR, there should be enough dynamic range to show the detail of the flames without clipping to white. Just make sure the flames look VERY bright against the surrounding stuff. Mad Max Fury Road is a perfect example of how to do fire in HDR.

For the interval sequence with animals rajamouli shot for around 65 nights, each night they spent around 75lakhs for the shoot itself... In that interval sequence they had to imagine animals were there n fight accordingly, for that to happen n so that each n every background artist to be in sync with the CG animals rajamouli employed different tactics while shooting which were not even used in Hollywood movies, a) for bear they used a person wearing green blanket, since the movement of bear is slow similar to a human being... b)For shots with tiger, tiger moves much faster than humans, so they can't just place a human with green blanket, so rajamouli positioned laser lights following the head position of the tiger, so that camera man n actors can imagine the position of tiger n act accordingly. c) for wolves they used dogs which were trained to catch a ball, while shooting the sequence they randomly throw the balls in middle of men, so the dogs chase the balls, in that way rajamouli captured peoples reactions to wolves, later on during CG he replaced the dogs with wolves... d) for other fast moving animals like deers, they used remote controlled cars moving in between the actors.... Rajamouli in an interview said in Hollywood movies they get to use very expensive cameras n equipment to get these kind of shots coz they have such huge budgets, but to attempt such shots in limited budget we hv to innovate things (jugaad) to get these shots for a minimal budget... One such innovation is using laser lights to represent animal's head movements, he took the help of IT students to place laser lights where required.. Rajamouli says the reason y most of the times we fail to get the animal shots right is animals in real life move at a fast speed any human could imagine, first we shoot the humans part n then we animate animals, so humans imagine animal coming towards them n act accordingly, but in his imagination animal moves slowly, so while animating animator has to slow down the animal's movements to keep sync with human's reactions, ultimately making the animal move slow, which looks fake for us, for this film what he did is he animated animal shots first n then placed laser lights on the set to reflect animals moving n then shot the scenes... He literally made humans run faster n faster, even in the making video named "Roar of RRR" we can hear him screeming "faster, faster" to Jr.NTR while shooting his intro scene😂😂 For that fire crackers scene he could hv done everything in CG but he chose to go with real fire crackers placed on threads, n later on he enhanced it in CG... There was even a mishap where one fire cracker changed its course n went so close to Ram charan's eye, later in an interview Ram charan jovially said that he was looking for the thread after the scene, he was scared later on realising that there was no thread beside his eye😂😂😂.. Rajamouli explains that we should get 80% of the shot by using real props (fire, smokes, wires, miniatures, fire crackers, water hoses etc), then we should enhance it by CG, if we do everything on CG it looks fake...

17:53 - Haven't watched this before but notice even the elements in the background corresponding to the characters. The fire guy has a full-on fire behind him when he goes into the fight (albeit off to the left), the water guy has the pool of fountain water behind him. The fire guy has fireworks swirling around chaoticlly with streams of sparks and smoke, the water guy has hoses going wild spraying streams of water. When the two do their flips into one-another the fire guy's torch flames extend much further to visually reflect the stream of water from the water guy's hose.
