The tiger was actually on set during the coliseum scene in Gladiator. There's a part in that fight where the tiger jumps on Russel Crowes back and takes him to the ground then immediately lunges for his hand before the camera cuts away. That's because Russel Crowe is actually the tiger handler dressed in the Maximus costume and he had a treat for the tiger in his hand.

According to the director's commentary on the DVD, the CG was all done by hand manually over the top like they did in Babe and Where The Wild Things Are. There were no tracking markers or dots on the actors, they just digitally rotoscoped all the shots with the pirates over the original footage.

@Lost_n_Found_1
@Lost_n_Found_1 3 жыл бұрын
At first I thought so too, but it really just promotes complacency more over innovation. Filmmaking is only as boundless as one allows it to be. Imagine how different cinema would be if this were a Lucas, Spielberg or Cameron quote from the 80's. My point is: Where there's a will, there's a way. With that mentality, there are no limits to what you can create.
@ErrantVanguard
@ErrantVanguard 3 жыл бұрын
I would argue that it promotes innovation as necessary, because in the end you are limited to less than you can imagine, you always will be, but you have to push your tools to achieve the best you can do, the closest you can make. That's all a matter of interpretation, though. I see you as reading it as more literal, but I saw more of an implication. I mean, if they really believed what you said, I don't think they'd be doing half of the things they've learned to do, because why bother?

Hey guys! So glad you got around to Where the Wild Things Are! I was lucky enough to work on set while they were filming down in Melbourne, Australia. I was there thru an attachment program with the vfx department. Watching Spike work with the DOP and vfx department too create this organic world was so amazing. Initially Jim Henson Studios were developing a puppet rig to control the Wild Things faces. The puppeteers had a glove with sensors that could animate all the features in the CG face. This performance could be captured in real time and then rendered with the footage back on. It was a pity they abandoned the idea because it would have been really cool. I actually got to do some basic work in the post department too. I rotoscoped the shot you used with Max running while the tree falls behind them. My 2 seconds of Hollywood fame!! Love the reacts series - keep up all the amazing work!

@@thedoctor8527 Exactly how they did it. There's even a gaff in the film, because the prosthetic chest was moulded before Robert Downey Jr. worked out for the role, so when he's laying on the bed the torso is very flat, and when he rises in the next shot his real torso has pecks and abs.

But this guy says, "It'S a WoNdErFuL fIlM." Screw that! I would never show my kids that movie. Just look up "Where the Wild Things Are arm ripped off."

Thank you for finally reviewing Where the Wild Things Are. Still some of the most believable and grounded effects on film, holds up very well 10+ yrs later. Novel and effective mix of practical and digital. Surprised it's not used more often.
