Ok guys, Phillip Cook made a film back in 1987 called "Beyond the Rising Moon". It is not brilliant, but it's solid - but this was pre-CGI stuff and it was all really cool miniature cheats, in-camera comps and slight-of-hand. They had limited sets and then would cut away to miniatures and some of it worked really well. Cook then "remastered" the film with CGI and retitled it "Outerworld" and in my opinion, took away all of the inventiveness and charm of the original. You should check out Beyond the Rising Moon as proof that Cook wasn't always a low-end CGI guy.
@ewolf87Ай бұрын
He also did the same thing to Invader! I think they should do an episode to compare and contrast Beyond the Rising Moon/Outerworld and Invader original and "remastered"! I know if you want Invader that isn't retouched up , its on VHS/Laserdisc (probably on KZbin) but DVD and most streaming have the remastered version.

I've come to learn that I appreciate ambition in movies more than anything else. Whether or not the movie is well made or not, you can always tell whether it was made with heart and passion and that shines through the screen more brightly than budget or talent. Of course you want every part of a movie to be good, but I'd rather watch a bad indy horror movie than a well-made but soulless Hollywood production.

Yea love their infinite well of positivity that they constantly exude. Makes sense though if you think about why. They are very obviously in love with their craft and since they have been doing it for more than a decade, they can also be considered masters at it by now. On top of that, they employ themselves, so that gets rid of the pesky idea of working toward someone else's goals, so they only have to answer to themselves and their audience. Basically, they are living a dream life.

I'm kind of in love with Despiser. Is it "good" in a technical sense? No. But it's so earnestly passionate. It works with what it has. The love for the art comes through so hard in a way that makes me feel it too. It's home-grown camp, and I'm totally invested. The full commitment to the janky CGI -- praise be to the punch zoom -- makes the jank feel almost like a deliberate stylistic choice, to the point where it comes across less as Neil Breen and more as an early 2000s Kung Fury. It's charming as hell. I want to be more like Phillip Cook. Because, like it or not, the man is not afraid of imperfection. He is here to create something, cringe be damned. That's ART, baby.
@durrell246Ай бұрын

I think the thing that gets me most about Despiser is that throughout the shots you showed us you can genuinely see some good camerawork and storytelling fundamentals?? Like I really wasn't expecting that from this movie starring some mid 40s dads on the budget of a few thousand dollars with CGI being brute-forced by one of the dad's computers at home? There are shots in it that are bad, sure, but there are a bunch of shots that actually genuinely convey what the director was trying to do, even with the bad CGI or bad acting or bad compositing, etc. Like the camera crashing into the cannon on the car during the bridge action sequence was genuinely a moment where I could FEEL what the director was going for, and that's honestly something you gotta give props for stuff like that. Shit is the most Dudes Rock ass film I've ever witnessed.
@rome8180Ай бұрын
That "putting the camera in a mirrored closet" trick is genius. I think more people should still be doing that. It's a lot cheaper than CGI.
@ThePizza28Ай бұрын
Yeah and we can go even further, that "7 minutes of still shots with select few having minuscule movement" trick is genius, I think more people should still be doing that. It's a lot cheaper than planning your sequence for 3 months to do a lot more, which on itseld probably cost more than the vfx required for the remaining impossible shots.

The king of purgatory was an alien that died in a crash near earth. Since it didn't have a human soul, it got stuck in purgatory. Purgatory here, was a corrupted, but constantly shifting version of earth. Kind of like a backrooms of the whole planet. The reason there were nukes, was because they existed on earth. All other people who lived in purgatory (including the bad guys), were people who weren't deserving of heaven, but who died while helping someone else to live, so they get a second chance in purgatory. The alien, though, was collecting nukes to create a way to break out of purgatory into heaven/back to earth. Honestly, the film would make a fantastic video game.

Like that edit at 16:06 with the car flipping followed by the camera moving with the car and slowing so as to keep the cars momentum feeling weighty is perfect action movie movie-making, John Woo/Mission Impossible level stuff (I think the reason it works is because it feels like a live-action edit). Something cool about the Bicentennial Man clip is that the whole context of him anxiously reminding the guy to be careful -- and the exaggerated "drop" gag -- leans into the fact that the guy is handling the head extremely smoothly (even when he fakes dropping it, he's still being careful), keeping it upright and faced dead forward the whole time, something that might otherwise feel artificial and detract from the effect.

Bicentennial man is a fond memory of mine. I went to see it in a small theater with my grandmother who died a few weeks back. It’s one of the more vivid memories I have with her. Cemented my love for Asimov too.
