Halo: I am absolutely BAFFLED at how badly they bungled it. I'm thankful I never watched it, but holy shit I didn't realize how bad the animation was. It looked like the episode in Halo Legends "The Package", except that animation was pure 3D and had an excuse to look like that, because it was stylized. One thing you guys didn't note on in the video, but what really takes me out at times with the Disney one is the color grading. Like at 4:10 , look at the levels of saturation between Jiminy Cricket and Pinocchio compared to the rest of the shot. The colors of the animated characters are popping off the screen, while the rest of the picture is very desaturated and grey. They don't look like they're in the same world at all. It could have been a deliberate choice at some point to make the animated characters feel like they're more "magical" and otherwordly, but it's just distracting with the otherwise photorealistic look. Edit: I guess they probably talk about this in the extended version, but I'm not going to pay just to find out :P

Big congrats on getting the 6 million! I just wanted to say that the new Blender short would be awesome for the VFX series. As well as *Aslan from the Chronicles of Narnia!* where you could do a comparison to the "live action" Lion King. Also at the end of second CoN movie there's a big water creature, so it might be cool to see what you think about that. Maybe also, Max Schneider's Gibberish music video, the editing kinda breaks my brain there. The *last agni kai fight from ATLA* would be perfect for for the Animators React. It's so stunning! And for stuntmen react It would be cool to see you react to the duel from "Potop", it's really good sword fight (tho technically it's sabers i think)

Love seeing the HALO content! Keep up the good work! It's worth noting that Halo Landfall came out in 2007 as promotional material for halo 3, not 2012. Bungie uploaded the video to youtube in 2012, hence the confusion.

12:19 so I was cruising around Reddit last week looking for other people who thought the finale just looked so bad (I finally got around to watching it) and some people absolutely loved it and thought it looked incredible. I just couldn’t understand. The first person stuff was kind of cool- but other than that…

Having work of Matteo Garrone 2019 Pinocchio, in feel a bit disappointed that hasn’t been included in this episode. I think Garrone captured the true nature of Collodi original novel. Which is not reapply a child story, it’s dark, grime and sad. It’s not an happy adventure like the Disney ones so Del Toro is not a spooky twist, the original novel it’s actually veeery spooky.

I'd really like them to talk about the Universal movie logo. The 1920's one with the plane revolving the globe and the letters floating around it must be a real, practical thing, but I don't have the slightest clue of how it's done. Also how it evolved over the years. The modern one is full CG, but there must be a story around the old ones.

Percy Jackson: Lightning Thief. Speaking of doing wet cloth, there is a scene when Percy first gets empowered by the water where it goes up his arm making his leather bracer, shirt sleeve and face wet that's pretty well done. Very curious how they pulled it off. Not to mention Grover (the satyr's) goat legs are kind of amazing.

The Core (2003) would be a good one to look at! Early-ish era VFX, trying to do bold things, fails, succeeds, and nobly tries to incorporate practical effects alongside its VFX only to have the latter look worse as a result.

A lot to unpack in this video. I am flabbergasted that the Halo tv show looks like that. It’s ropey as hell. The Disney Pinocchio was also ropey. The cricket is so saturated in those boat shots that he doesn’t even look like he’s in the same movie. Loved the Del Toro one. My friends actually worked on it so congrats to Devon and Meg on the golden globe win. And I almost feel bad for the true story Pinocchio. If there weren’t 2 others the same year it would have been forgotten like it was intended. That said, it has probably made 5x as much money as it expected just because folks want to dunk on it.

You guys should look at halo forward unto dawn. It’s so GOOD!!! It was a series in 2012 created on KZbin to market halo 4 and be a possible starting point for a film adaptation too (which sadly never ended up happening). The series follows a cadet in training, where there base ends up getting attacked. It’s is such a cool and original concept as we never see the franchise in said peoples perspective. In 2014 Microsoft put out a movie in support of Halo 5 called Halo: Nightfall. I recall it being pretty good, and it's probably worth taking a look at in a future episode. Also, Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn was FANTASTIC for 2012 when it came out, also produced by Microsoft. It's amazing what happens when the people who own the IP put it to use.

@@DiMono ...and a 67% is pretty shit on a rating system. Nor does it tell you how many of that 67% are actually Halo fans or even know about the content. 67% at best tells you it isn't the worst thing ever. It could be terrible Halo content which is dumb fun enough to attract likes from people who don't know better. Same goes in reverse, dude. Liking something doesn't make it good, either.

I never heard of Halo: Nightfall, and will have to check it out. I was also going to mention Forward Unto Dawn which based on my memory and what I just saw here, had substantially better story telling and graphics.

@@TuffMelon Considering it was released specifically to promote Halo 5 and it wasn't publicized beyond that audience *at all*, I would expect that only people who play the game or are familiar with the IP were even aware that it existed. 67% liking it is 2 out of 3, which is a far cry from the "vast majority" thinking it's shit. I'm not claiming that me liking it means other people like it, I'm saying the evidence does not support a consensus that everyone thinks it's bad. In fact, most people seem to think it was pretty okay.

Thanks for another cool episode. You don't cover live TV or sports at all. What I mean is the tech for the AR elements in live TV like line of scrimmage on a green field, weather channel "instant TV" (acts like it pops out from the floor), nascar car tracker, or the ads dropped into baseball/basketball/football games. The history of the chyron. These augmentations are really cool and some of them use advanced tech so they are not very complex to run during the show. Even the tech behind the Volume at ILM Stagecraft gets used for live TV. Kinda. Still it's cool stuff you could cover.

You should have included a reaction to the original Disney Pinocchio. That would have been the Avatar or Jurassic Park of its time and animation being that it was only the second Disney full-length animation after Snow White. It's really just a set of (stunning) set pieces, showcasing what Disney had learned and invented in the animation field tied, together by a simple narrative.
