Del Toro had been working on his version for years. This looks like Disney couldn't let Del Toro take the spotlight alone with a story that Disney felt like it owned. Which is telling, and sad. And it was obviously an emotional decision, as they didn't put out a competitor until it was almost too late.

Hey, so I was working in MPC Bangalore as a character modeller until yesterday, and the Disney's Pinocchio was the 1st project I worked on. I was so burnt out by the work, i was running on fumes and only thing that kept me going was my respect for my leads, sup and production manager. I was SOOOO disappointed when I saw the movie, because how rushed the story felt. I never cared to know if I got credits in any film after this. And the amount of creative changes we were getting. I mean the design changes we were getting while the compositing was going on. It's just sad.

God Disney's Pinocchio towards the end just looks like they literally ran out of budget so were like "Here....Do whatever you can with it." and just shoved it onto Disney+. Like it just FEELS so much like a direct to DVD movie. Meanwhile Del Toro's Pinocchio is a movie that RADIATES passion and love for the craft of animation. My parents even watched it and they HARDLY ever watch animations anymore. Takes a lot of convincing. But they loved it. And I love it. It's a gorgeous movie. I loved how the Life and Death sisters were like these biblically accurate designs and the concepts of life and death and what makes life meaningful, and what makes family family and the voice work and just EVERYTHING about it is incredible. I can't believe studios didn't want to back it. Their loss.

I love how they mention Guillermo del Toro taking a dark spin on things when they go over his version of Pinocchio, because the original story is in fact really dark. Pinocchio: I honestly have to say that Guillermo's Pinocchio actually out-shined even the original Pinocchio movie, in terms of cinematic value. Not downplaying how beautifully animated the original was, but something about Del Toro's Pinocchio, the lovely songs and the amazing character designs, it just stuck with me a lot. Amazing movie, and I wanna see Del Toro produce even more animated/stop motion content (Yes I know he was in charge of Trollhunters; Trollhunters was amazing until the third season, we don't talk about 3Below, and Wizards was... all right). Halo: I am absolutely BAFFLED at how badly they bungled it. I'm thankful I never watched it, but holy shit I didn't realize how bad the animation was. It looked like the episode in Halo Legends "The Package", except that animation was pure 3D and had an excuse to look like that, because it was stylized. One thing you guys didn't note on in the video, but what really takes me out at times with the Disney one is the color grading. Like at 4:10 , look at the levels of saturation between Jiminy Cricket and Pinocchio compared to the rest of the shot. The colors of the animated characters are popping off the screen, while the rest of the picture is very desaturated and grey. They don't look like they're in the same world at all. It could have been a deliberate choice at some point to make the animated characters feel like they're more "magical" and otherwordly, but it's just distracting with the otherwise photorealistic look. Edit: I guess they probably talk about this in the extended version, but I'm not going to pay just to find out :P

I'd really like them to talk about the Universal movie logo. The 1920's one with the plane revolving the globe and the letters floating around it must be a real, practical thing, but I don't have the slightest clue of how it's done. Also how it evolved over the years. The modern one is full CG, but there must be a story around the old ones.

And spiderman 3... The sandman effects? when Spidey punches through him? or when sandman is "born"? and of course, Venom! Having work of Matteo Garrone 2019 Pinocchio, in feel a bit disappointed that hasn’t been included in this episode. I think Garrone captured the true nature of Collodi original novel. Which is not reapply a child story, it’s dark, grime and sad. It’s not an happy adventure like the Disney ones so Del Toro is not a spooky twist, the original novel it’s actually veeery spooky.

A lot to unpack in this video. I am flabbergasted that the Halo tv show looks like that. It’s ropey as hell. The Disney Pinocchio was also ropey. The cricket is so saturated in those boat shots that he doesn’t even look like he’s in the same movie. Loved the Del Toro one. My friends actually worked on it so congrats to Devon and Meg on the golden globe win. And I almost feel bad for the true story Pinocchio. If there weren’t 2 others the same year it would have been forgotten like it was intended. That said, it has probably made 5x as much money as it expected just because folks want to dunk on it.

Big congrats on getting the 6 million! I just wanted to say that the new Blender short would be awesome for the VFX series. As well as *Aslan from the Chronicles of Narnia!* where you could do a comparison to the "live action" Lion King. Also at the end of second CoN movie there's a big water creature, so it might be cool to see what you think about that. Maybe also, Max Schneider's Gibberish music video, the editing kinda breaks my brain there. The *last agni kai fight from ATLA* would be perfect for for the Animators React. It's so stunning! And for stuntmen react It would be cool to see you react to the duel from "Potop", it's really good sword fight (tho technically it's sabers i think)

@@TuffMelon Considering it was released specifically to promote Halo 5 and it wasn't publicized beyond that audience *at all*, I would expect that only people who play the game or are familiar with the IP were even aware that it existed. 67% liking it is 2 out of 3, which is a far cry from the "vast majority" thinking it's shit. I'm not claiming that me liking it means other people like it, I'm saying the evidence does not support a consensus that everyone thinks it's bad.
