In this video, filmed at the North American Mycological Association 2023 Appalachian foray, I show how to identify a good edible mushroom called the corrugated fish milk cap, Lactifluus corrugis.
This wrinkled and reddish-brown mushroom produces an abundant white juice when damaged. This sticky juice - also called latex - has an underwear-adjacent aroma that isn't very appealing. But when cooked, the corrugated milky cap is a delicious and substantial mushroom for the table.
Tune in and learn how to identify Lactifluus corrugis, its near relative Lactifluus volemus (aka fish milky cap), and get a summary of some of the hot topics at the 2023 NAMA foray, including info on how mycologists, mushroom hunters, and citizen scientists collaborate to gather and document the astonishing fungal diversity of North America's wild spaces.
