Out of all the brands involved, I would rank Angelbird as the least reputable. Tilta is everywhere in high budget commercial shoots, from the Hydra car rig, Ronin support systems and of course the Nucleus family of devices being used on Arris for years now. My money is on the cards.

We've had both of these problems this past year. Anglebird cards and Tilta V-Mount Universal Battery Plate. From what I can tell your media issue is probably the cards and has nothing to do with the battery plate. We purchased those same cards earlier this year and had errors on the first shoot. Returned them immediately after that shoot and after finding on multiple forums and sites that others had issues with them as well. Like someone already said, those cards have been discontinued, and for good reason. Now in regards to your battery plate, just like you, we've had perfect usage for the past two years... up until two months ago when one of the boards of the battery plates fried up on me and started smoking during a shoot. Thing is though the camera was absolutely fine. We use BMPCC6k's which are generally alot cheaper in build quality then a Sony so I would be surprised if your Sony has less tolerance than my Blackmagic in handling a sudden power change and not just stopping recording or shutting off if something like sudden power delivery change occurred. I forget from the video but do you keep a Sony battery plugged in as well as having it hooked up to the battery plate? Or do you have it running off a dummy battery that also connects to the plate? I would only presume that the battery plate is at fault if you are only powering the camera off of that without any other battery plugged in. Which if that is the case I would advise for you to start using a regular sony battery in conjuction with a battery plate as a redunancy in case the plate does actually fail.

It doesn't matter if tilta is everywhere in high budget shoots, they are hot chinese trash. They are known for bricking cameras with their power plates specifically for RED cameras. A lot of people I know in the youtube space dislike Tilta but no one cares to talk about it because they don't to be blacklisted from receiving products.

Well two immediate workflow issues that I notice (assuming I understand correctly). 1: You said a couple times your format the card and then you put it in the camera. The cards should be formatted in camera every time. Even if they are empty and have been cleared on a computer you need to let the camera format them. If you frequently forget you can use a tool like Parashoot when you’re offloading to prompt the camera to format when you insert it. 2. Actually shooting out a whole card. In the computer and IT world, it’s considered a very poor practice to ever let your storage media fill up completely. The guideline used to be 80% capacity but people push that closer to 90/95% now. I try to never completely fill up camera media. Obviously things happen but avoid it as much as you can. Have you had those cards since you got your FX6? Or even before? They do have a use life after which they should be retired. The other disadvantage of smaller SD cards (64GB) is they wear out faster. I like ProGrade because you can use their software to look at how many writes the cards have had and how healthy they are overall. But I think you said you have 3x 128GB and 1x64GB? If that’s all the media you’ve had while using your FX6 (especially if it’s ever further back since your C70) I think you’re definitely due for a replacement.

@@BryceDearden 1. Yes, I may have misspoke in the video but the cards are always formatted in camera. 2. I am adopting this practice moving forward to switch media before reaching capacity. Additionally, many people have suggested turning off the camera before switching media. Yes, these cards are from my c70 days, over two years ago. That could very well be the end of their life. Either way, I won’t be using them further.

A friend had a similar corruption issue on a long interview running the camera on mains power with non Sony v90 SD cards. I think the power port is probably sensitive to voltage fluctuations, especially if you power camera and monitor/accessories from the same v lock, which in turn screws up the board processing temporarily. I'm sure that media with cheaper components, less buffer etc only adds to the issue. He kept the media but started doing all long interviews on large BPU batteries and the problem never happened again. My guess is it's 2/3 power 1/3 bad media . So both.

Hi all. Great videos David. Just adding my similar experience for what it's worth (basically a transcript of what I sent the company from where I bought the FX6 and cards etc.): Camera bought November 2022. All running fine for the a year, many shoots all fine - many shoots filling up the Sony 160GB cards until there is almost no space left. Buy Angelbird 1TB card. Insert Angelbird 1TB and format. Issue with Angelbird 1TB not recording. Stopped recording after filming around 300GB worth of footage. Plenty of space left on card. Now same issue happening with Sony 160GB cards now not recording. Stopped recording after recording around 70GB worth of footage. Noticed file structure on cards is different to usual. Factory reset camera. Same issue then happening with Sony 320GB cards as well. The only one that the issue doesn't happen with now is the Sony 160GB (after factory resetting the camera). FX6 was on firmware V3.00 when this was happening. Have since upgraded to Firmware 5.01 and haven't had that issue with the Sony 160GB or Sony 320GB cards yet. Have not tried using the Angelbird 1TB cards since. So unable to determine if it was coincidence or if it was the Angelbird card that started it all. Note: All accessories used, e.g. batteries are Sony brand. Thanks, and hope someone, somewhere has an an answer as it seems to be happening to quite a few people (another colleague in my circle of freelancers had the same issue - though it happened to him again even after updating to the latest firmware).

I just purchased an FX6 and also have a few Red KX cameras, so Tilta never gets a spot in my workflow. I really did not like anything out there for a V-Mount option so I came up with using the Core SWX 98w BPU style battery and then putting 2 Core SWX Powerbase Edge Snap batteries on my rails behind that. The BPU battery only powers the camera and the Edge Snap batteries send power using their new protected USB cables to the BPU, keeping it charged and the rest of the outputs on the edge battery ( another USB and 2 Dtaps ) power everything else on the camera. This protects the power going to the camea and also isolates everything else from the camera and giving extra protection to the SDI grounding issue as well. I have only used it once this way for testing, but everything work. And using the 98wh BPU battery only gives me a good lightweight set-up as well. I also only use the Sony CFExpress cards. I got them when the A7sIII and FX3 cameras came out and was glad to see they also worked in the FX6. IT was a tough purchase at first but now I am glad I did it.

From left field. Consider the media formatting method. On Blackmagic forums one of the pieces of advice is to only use the camera to format your media. This advice may also perhaps usefully apply to the Sony. If nothing else it allows the camera system itself to determine the functional space of the drive. As an alternative guess that you might not have thought about, I wonder if the top handle became loose and shorted something. So after you powered down and restarted, it stopped shorting but the audio connection wasn’t secure which lead to bad audio. After a couple of takes it could have settled and made a secure connection again. It doesn’t seem likely, but that is at least something electronic that controls the camera and also is audio related.

I'm not sure what the internals of the Tilta plate look like, but I cant find any info to suggest that it conditions or regulates power coming from an external battery. I personally have also steered clear of smallrig batteries for cameras since they don't really have a proven track record yet compared to Anton Bauer or CoreSWX. My theory is that the power went slightly out of spec for the fx6 to cause issue. Personally the choice to use the wooden camera plate also allows me to have a BP-U in the body for redundancy and will let the camera auto swap power source should the battery trip the fuse.

Are you dual card recording? If not.. this is why you need to! Again.. the Wooden Camera system allows for the BPU battery to take over seamlessly with power interruptions like switching out a V-Mount or when the v-Mount runs out.. Maybe that's why people aren't complaining about it? From chatGPT: Tilta: There have been some reports of power-related issues affecting media recording, though they aren't widespread. The problems are often traced back to specific configurations, such as using lower-quality batteries. Wooden Camera: Fewer complaints about power affecting recording stability. Hey there! Honestly I think you're thinking about this all wrong, what you need is redundancy. Let me explain; I record a bunch of interviews, and for my A Cam I use a rigged out Sony a7sIII where I do most of my monitoring like I imagine you do on your fx6. Now, the main differences my rig has in comparison to yours, to my understanding is that I have redundancy in case something goes wrong. In the case of the audio I record with the RODE Wireless Pro, it records 32-bit float audio ON THE TRANSMITTER in case something goes wrong with the file on my camera I know that I have a really good quality file in the transmitter. "Yeah but I'm using a shotgun mic, not a lav.." yeah me too, I use the Sennheiser mke600 which can take a AA battery and I run it through one of the Rode Wireless Pro transmitters. This takes care of the audio. Regarding the power situation I think using another v-mount plate instead of the Tilta one is the right answer, but not for the reason you talked about in the video. To my knowledge, the Tilta plate attaches to the NPF battery slot on the fx6, right? Prohibiting you from using a battery on the camera as well as the V-mount battery, correct? This is where I think another power solution would be better, because just like in my case where I have a battery inside my a7sIII and I get power from the Smallrig Mini V-Mount Plate using USB-C, you should do the same. Have a battery on your camera, and have external power going into it as well. That way, even if the battery runs out, all your perifals might go out but your camera will keep on recording like nothing happened giving you and your talent time to wrap up things and swich out the battery and it's more convenient. IF something happens to the file, this way at least you know it's the camera's fault and not anything else because you had redundancy measures in action. Glad to answer any questions anyone might have on this matter and also if you think I might be missing something in my thought process let me know I'll be open to chat!

@@Berna75 Redundancies are always beneficial. There’s a bit of information you are missing that I addressed in my previous video but you’re not far off. 1) I used the DJI Mic 2 as the lav. Unfortunately they were not internally recording. Safe to say they are set to do so now. 2) The problem wasn’t a loss of power. In fact, I had to manually turn the camera off. Quite a few people have mentioned the WC plate for this reason. However, as I addressed in the video, the other user who had the same problem as me, same error code and ended up having to replace his main board- was using the WC plate you recommended. So as I see it, any 3rd party power supply falls into the category of being proven to have similar failure points. But especially wooden camera and Tilta as that is the anecdotal evidence I have. Right now, I’m operating off assumptions and I am really looking forward to hearing what the Sony techs say! I appreciate your input though. More redundancy Ora gives will be added. Also, definitely record the backup of audio when you can too. Those DJI do have backup recording, very much worth the effort. I still think it might be possible to fully recover the currupted file with a recover service with werecoverdata but it's hard to know for sure. When you said you had a fresh formatted card and you out that into the camera to record the next clip and it also started to flash after a few minutes, was it formatted in the FX6 camera or on your mac previously? It's also not necessarily the v-lock mount, some of them have power regulation and some of them don't. Often it's the V-Mount battery's output that is so unregulated that's very easy for an over voltage to come out of the battery. I have fried lights because of the lack of v-mount regulation. But reading the details of the tilta and the wooden camera, it claims to be pushing a regulated voltage. So it's really hard to know for sure. CF-Express Type A cards, more durable, and sony oem. But I think that there is a likely hood that the over voltage makes a lot of sense when you have 2 dead cards. Seems sus. But basically 2 big questions: 1. Do you format your cards on your mac or on the camera? It's not clear and a few folks have been asking. It's best practice to format on camera (always) as formatting them on a mac or pc will create incompatibilities. 2.When you do battery swaps are you following the 12G SDI protocol? It's very easy to short a camera when not doing battery swaps in the correct order and pulling the sdi port before pulling the battery, and connecting the battery before reconnecting the sdi.,

I hate to say that it really does seem likely an over voltage event occurred and may have damaged the board. I know that tilta and wooden camera manage the voltage into the fx6 so either their circuitry is bad or you might have gotten hit with a ground loop when connecting/disconnecting batteries. And that can cause a short following the same nightmare scenario as those Komodo shooters. As the fx6 is a 12G sdi connection. And because those issues also are rare anyway and require a specific set of failures to all happen at the same time, it’s hard to even know how common it might be. When your original card filled up(I’m assuming it was a 128gb) did you replace it with an identical sized card(128gb) or a smaller sized card? If you replaced it with a smaller card that could be the culprit of your problem; when a camera doesn’t finish exporting the video and needs to complete encoding on another card, it needs an identical size in order for the “buffer memory” to finish writing properly. If you put in a smaller card then it will not be enough space for the clip to finish exporting. My advice is to use 256gb and nothing less. Stop recording before your cards hit 80% capacity; if interview goes longer get bigger cards. Think of cards like hard drives, they get slow and sketchy once you pass 90% capacity.

The biggest problem that I have with B&H is they always seem to be closed when you need them the most. If there is this big concern from Sony about using third party accessories like Tilta or Wooden camera plates, then why doesn't Sony make their own solution for them and keep everything "in house" so to speak?
@davidmorefield
@davidmorefield 25 күн бұрын
@@ty-k6708 They do keep it in house… with their bpu’s. The answer will actually come from their higher price point cameras. Burano and Venice both have native v-mount. That is why I have stated in other videos that I wish the fx line had the same power supply. Most people who use this camera use a plate to power additional accessories. I guess in Sony’s mind they are saying that if you want these features- then we have another camera just for that purpose. It’s product segmentation. I get it but it’s annoying for us.

lol, I have been using 3rd party v-mount batteries on my FS5MIIs for about 6 years now. Hmm, maybe I should stick with that. Lol. I am considering a used FX9 though mainly due to 4K Super 35. That said, it is so crazy to hear people having issues with the FX6. It must be pretty few. I mean I get cheaper specs for some 3rd party brands and there are some products that just have a higher failure rate. For the sheer volume though of people using them, I don’t know. My guess is they will just replace the board. Swaptronics is cheaper for them than repairing. This is coming from someone who spent over 20 years repairing radio systems. Honestly I don’t believe it was the media or the Wooden Camera V-mount plate that damaged my FX6. The only issue I can pinpoint, which is entirely my fault, is with my SmallHD monitor. @@davidmorefield I didn't necessarily think that your issue was caused by SDI/HDMI/powering protocol. I agree that when that short happens, it's instantaneous and you would have known about it right away because either a monitor or your camera would have fried and wouldn't have worked. My bet with your camera/issue is either media or your V Mount causing a surge possibly. I think you're on the right track but hopefully Sony will have some news for you about what they think caused your issues. I do think you should eliminate SDXC cards from your FX6, the CFA cards are so much better. The Sony cards are good but kind of a ripoff as far as value equation. We've been running the Nextorage 480GB cards since July and abusing them and they cost a fraction of what the Sony cards go for. $199 for 480GB. They are a Japanese company started by ex Sony media engineers in 2019. If you wait until Black Friday, they'll likely be back down to $159. They have a five year warranty too and they have been flawless. They also download 8x-10x faster than SD cards.

I 100% do not trust anything Tilta related, especially for power. While they are a great and attractive solution, I honestly have ONLY had issues with 3rd party power options on all my cameras. Best bet? Rod mount a dummy vmount, and get regulated cables that you can run directly to the camera. That way, you know that there is 100% never an issue with power regulation. But I will say, it's very odd that they would point to voltage/wattage issues as the cause. Usually if it fluxuates the camera just shuts off.
@brandonmrsh
@brandonmrsh 26 күн бұрын
I will add, at the end of the day, all 3rd party companies are doing the same thing - Taking a positive, negative, and ground wire and running it through a voltage regulator, then taking those positive, negative, and ground wires and connecting them to the source. It's the most basic circuitry imaginable. At the end of the day, it comes down to the question - Does the 3rd party company use quality parts to regulate the voltage properly? Honestly.. It's probably a toss up between most of them. I don't think wooden camera is using higher quality parts compared to Tilta, nor Mid49, Kondor Blue, etc - However, I could totally be wrong. As far as I know, the FX (and FS) series of cameras are very sensitive to what kind of voltage they will properly run off of. Best solution? Use a recorder that has the ability to also output the signal (something by Zoom would probably get the job done) I would then run that signal INTO your FX6. You'll be able to know comfortably that you have a solid audio track, and you can also doubledown and test the FX6 to see if the issue persists. Not ideal for run and gun, but for anything on sticks, you'll be fine. Good luck
