For anyone who still doesn’t really understand what a zine is even after hearing the videos definition, from what I’ve gathered it’s basically a self-published magazine/book with a theme of some sort, usually a passion or fandom.

All my zine experiences so far have been really disappointing. In my most recent "zine" I was in, it was cancelled last minute after most of the contributors pieces were finished. However, my FIRST zine experience was a shitshow. I had applied for a lemon demon zine in 2020 and while I didn't get to make a piece, I DID make a sticker design. The zine was set to start pre-orders in October and it looked super professional, with tons of listing for merch bundles, t-shirts, the whole she-bang. I got my mom to order the merch bundle that had my sticker on it which was 30 USD. After pre-orders closed, the organizers said they'd start shipping in late november. November passed. Nothing. December passed. Nothing. ALMOST 2 WHOLE YEARS have passed since the time they promised to ship. NOBODY, to my knowledge, got their packages. And you wanna know something even worse? The same organizers, WHILE THIS WAS GOING ON, started up ANOTHER zine, this time themed after infinity train. I think you can guess how that one went. So here's my beware: if you hear about a zine being published by "the mobius strip club" don't bother.

I was the shipping mod on the Devil’s Nest Zine and I was just sent this by my good friend (also a mod haha) and I just want to say I’m so happy to hear our zine was such a pleasant experience for you. It was our first time as moderators as well so it means a lot!! We’ve since only done one more large zine like that in the meantime, but our aim was always to give everyone as fair a chance as possible, follower count didn’t matter at all; especially as we all knew how it felt to be rejected ourselves (part of the reason we decided to mod LOL) - and I remember you asking for advice, always so glad to give that to people looking to make fanzines. Thank you so much for mentioning us!

My zine experiences were horrible one was never finished and every artist had done their part and still don't know what the problem was because it was only to be an online zine but the worse part was receiving emails telling to not post the piece anywhere for years, and the other was appling to one getting rejected almost immediately and the mods begging for more people to enter it for months because it was for small fandom, not saying that maybe my art wasn't up for their level but still think they were trying to pick a specific big artist that didn't apply

I thought everyone knew the Wikipedia trick, haha. Most teachers don’t want you to cite Wikipedia in your citation. But for those who don’t know, at the bottom of each wiki article they have their OWN citations listed. I used Wikipedia for all my reports. I just chose a few random websites the article had already listed for my citation.
@Scarshadow666
@Scarshadow666 10 ай бұрын
Yeah, I think the avoidance of Wikipedia is dated nowadays since (depending on what you're look up) a lot of the info on Wikipedia is easier to back up then it used to be even just a decade ago. When I was in school, the most common reason I used to hear about why Wikipedia couldn't be a source was that it was supposed to mentally stimulate us and help us clarify how truthful our sources were, even if the site for them was reputable. (Though, even so, most other students usually just click on the references within the Wikipedia itself and used those references as sources anyways, lol). ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I think the real issue is that the name "zines" has been taken for what are actually "fanbooks". The only zine I've been part of was called a 'fanbook'. It was made on a photocopier (though it honestly looks professional, I wish other countries had combini photocopiers) and sold only to cover expenses like you said, as it was sold at a convention in Japan. The original type of 'zines' still exist offline in artist collectives, artist markets, etc. in my experience in the UK.

@Lylie's Corner Ok? I am also a working illustrator and Im in school for traditional animation and film business. 100% that makes sense for a work environment but that is very different than a small fan project who most likely have tons of people not used to rejection getting in my opinion a pretty harsh rejection. What you’re talking about is a completely different work environment than a fan zine for fun.

Everything you mentioned is also what I have noticed in the zine community. Luckily for me, my first zine experience was awesome! The mods were nice and understanding and everyone turned in their work on time. I also applied to a bunch of genshin zines (the gorou one too lol) and got rejected by all of them. When they would announce who got in, most of them had thousands of followers, the lowest I saw was maybe 1-2k followers. It makes me a bit sad knowing that they only choose those with high followings :(

What a wonderful video! The only Zine I have participated in itself was a FFXIV one called Memories of Crystal! The only reason I managed to get in was the fact we *all* wished to make a book to thank the developers of the game with artwork, crafts and written works based off the game and *everyone* was welcome- skill level didn't matter. (Plus, it was for charity!) I'd love to participate in more Zines, they're a lot of fun! ...yet it's so discouraging and disappointing when there's this huge bias and favoritism in these projects to get those with large followings and overshadow talented artists that barely have even 1/8th of the follower count these giants have. It's even WORSE when, as you said, the cliques that form in these communities. It's a slap on the face to see the same 5-10 artists in a bunch of Zines. All I (and many people I know) wish to do is to share my work and improve in my own skills- I want to have fun but also challenge myself-! Yet a lot of people don't realize how hurtful it is to just shut down so many amazing and skilled artists all because they dont have, idk, at least 5k followers. Thank you for this video. I feel this sort of thing SHOULD be called out and people need a reality check about this sickening favoritism.

Regarding your commentary about Genshin Zines, it does align with my experience in a way that I’m shook. Same people managing and same big artists even when the ships or themes were totally different. I got rejected for all my submission which was disheartening, especially as I had never THIS problem in other fandoms, even when some of them were VERY VERY big as well. I’m okay to be rejected but again and again when I knew my art wasn’t that bad and worked very well on some of the theme did hurt. Because I have restarted an account with a very little number of followers right now, I did wonder if it had an influence on the result and I may never know tbh. In any case, my conclusion was that I may just never join any Genshin community stuff anymore even if I get popular one day (lol). I’ll still draw for this game because I love it but I got much more love and sense of unity in other fandoms. (Sorry for the rant, but it felt very soothing to have this video being quite realistic and similar to my experience, cheers).

Aahh yes, zines. For my last (definitely last!) application I didn't just write my pitches but sketched all 11 pitches out. Man did I feel misbrably when I got turned down and realized that neither my portfolio nor the pitch sketches were even looked at. I'm so done applying to projects just to be reminded that I don't matter without a large following or being a friend to someone popular... It became so saddening over the years, it even made me totally hate posting my art because I feel there is no value to showing it just for the sake of showing it. After all, without it 'increasing' my 'value' as artist, it won't get me to do the things I wanted to try so much... Really wishing I never ever heard of zines in my life. :/

I feel like this video makes a lot assumptions without actual evidence to prove it. You said you applied to 10 Genshin zines and got into none of them - but if it’s an experiment, then can you tell us how many applications they got overall? What the follower counts of everyone rejected were? How can you possibly conclude that you were rejected because of follower count, when we don’t even have all the information about who applied? Genshin zines, as I understand it, are highly competitive to get into. I’m not saying that no projects are like this, but I think to insinuate that the large majority of zines have a problem with bias towards high follower counts is disingenuous. On a lighter note, I encourage people to look into making their own digital-release zines! Come-one-come-all community zines are really rewarding to work on, and it’s fun to see everyone’s work come together.
@EvaHoshizora
@EvaHoshizora 2 жыл бұрын
From my observation, they always take the same people in for the project. There was some complaints on Twitter that the same artist got into 5 different zines from different people, even though their art was not the best, but their follower count was at 6 digits. I never looked too deep into it, but you might be able to find more on that if you search for it.

When emails got sent i got word that very talented friends were also rejected. We went looking for answers and sure enough, everyone admitted was either a known artist or someone with over 2k, which me and my friends don't have. I made one page folded Zine business cards. So I could show a few black and white artworks with informations about sizes/prices my socials, and private art lessons, etc. I keep planning in making more Zines so I can have them easily for sale. I’m thinking mini comic books, short stories and art samples. I’m considering low cost handmade and keep the sale price low. I’m considering offering the zine as a free bonus for a large enough purchase of prints and other art at an in person art show. So also hand sewn small booklets. So far I’ve only made the business cards and blank sketchbook/journal versions with different papers. I also made some customized sketchbooks that are very small so they fit in my purse as tiny travel sketchbooks. Still thinking about small comics/art zines… I’m also intending in it being all my own original work without using anything owned by someone else’s copyright. Only with stuff I have the copyright to use. I also think it will mostly be low cost paper and likely black and white. However I’m having a bit of trouble with my printer so I need to figure out how to repair it somehow as I do have more refills for it. I’m also intending in making my zines 100% by myself with no help from nor collaboration for anyone. This is mostly because I have no money and anxiety and fears of miscommunication or being treated badly by a stranger seems not worth the trouble. I’d want to compensate others fairly but as I can’t I feel like I just have to do it all myself. I suppose if we traded art across zines such as I did an art for their zine so they do an equal sized/complex art it would be fair… but then I’d be relying on other people and really that makes things more likely to go wrong. I could forget to check my E-mail fast enough. Personally I’d run a zine with a friend if I knew they were reliable and were able to take on the work (time/mental energy) but I Don’t want to either make excuses or be disappointed by others… Still I feel it’s only logical to work with people you know, before people you don’t know; human nature really. I think fairly compensating others and being clear about what’s going on is fair. Say your preferring friends and famous then it’s at least transparent. Nepotism to me is hiring Family even if they Don;t want the job/aren’t good at it. Nepotism is hiring because of their name/association regardless of credentials. There isn’t as much of a problem if the person is qualified/wants and maybe even needs the job even if it’s nepotism. Personally the nepotism that I despise is when the family member is horrible/unqualified and/or doesn’t want the job I the first place but actually feels pressured by others to take it. Goro Miyazaki, Hayo Miyazakis son is an example of this. He isn’t best suited/ nor the most qualified for the job nor does he really want it; but the ‘executives’ bullied and pressured him to do it because they believe his bloodline gives him art magic or some nonsense…. It’s a non issues when the person is responsible, professional, needs the job, can handle it mentally, has the time and is great at it (qualified). Even if you know them that’s more like Luke/fate to me! Anyways interesting video, thanks.

I tried applying to other zines(not naming them for safety issues because I'm a paranoid person) but I would keep getting rejected because it would either be that my art wasn't 'professional' enough(yet they had no problem accepting other's art that isn't up to professional standards) or that I'm not a big famous artist with bajillion views. :/ It's been very discouraging for me and I just gave up applying as I feel like I'm just wasting my time so what's the point? It's just easier to make your own personal zine(which I'm planning to do this summer) and share it online even though I'm not going to sell it.

Thank you for the great video! This shed a lot of light onto the history of zines and problems I didn’t know existed :0 When I first found out about zines, I had the same initial impression that follower count mattered. The final lineup of contributors were all pretty big artists and there were several big names within the art community. But thinking back, I felt that my art was just not as good as theirs and that was ultimately why I was rejected, basically based on merit. Since then, I’ve worked on 2 other genshin zines and my experience was really great! From my point of view, contributors weren’t chosen based on follower count and instead, art skill~ I remember seeing several artists with less than a thousand followers working on the zines but had really pretty art! Although I can’t say much about nepotism as I didn’t really know who knew who ^^;

What I really wish some bigger artists would do is make zines or similar to showcase smaller artists instead. You’d just need one or two artists with a platform for promotion and then the rest of the artists would have to be under a certain number, preferably triple digits. Unfortunately I don’t see any artist with influence doing this without making little artists pay to participate because in my experience, any artist with a platform doesn’t want to risk giving themselves any extra competition

I’ve been to shops that sell traditional zines, and I find that they are more photocopied text + some images on stapled paper, while fanzines are typically bound together (printed in a more “book” like form) and feature largely art (or sometimes fan fiction) zines are definitely not as popular with the advent of the internet, but I feel like they are two different beasts and are for two different markets.

I still didn't understand what a zine was despite your definition. Now that I've googled I /think/ it's a self-published magazine.
@Beefingtoniii
@Beefingtoniii 2 жыл бұрын
Yes exactly, typically they have themes or follow a fandom of some sort. A collection of different pieces from different artists that follow that theme, and are then compiled and published by the person in charge (it’s self published because it doesn’t follow any company)

I've thought about doing a zine dealing with art and disability, just not sure what to put in it but would have digitally and physical copies. they should be profitable for artists whether they are a group zine or just one person but they can sometimes end up being all about who knows who and who is more popular rather than the topic/idea/fandom they are trying to showcase

For the Zines I have been a mod of, we usually request social medias so that we can further look into more of your artwork beyond the portfolio, as well as that if you get accepted you can get properly credited/linked rather than look into follower count. But that’s just my experience.

I remember a younger me years ago that I planned to make a zine just with myself to do Kyo Kara Maou fanarts because it stemmed from wanting to be on a zine but I wasn't in one and was never invited while all my artist friends circle are all in zines which I have interests too, but it never happened because the idea of drawing a LOT and technically not knowing where to print it just made me question myself so I just went with my own day 😆 I still don't have any experiences nor being invited to zines but I just am looking at what you did point out. And it is just taken a hit on me that most zines I do see were definitely inclusive by their own circle and the amount of followers they have on their socials. They still really don't "branch" out. And most of they pick are those that are "brainrot" on that series, which I can understand to a degree.

I'm not gonna lie, this is a very thought-provoking video. My experience with zines is a little unorthodox because I applied to one on a whim at like 14 and the mods basically adopted me?? Like at the time the fact that I got into a selective zine felt very special and it definitely gave me confidence in my skills, but I definitely think that something is lost when you call it a zine and then make people apply and compete for positions in it. I really wish I could just... work on projects with my friends, but since I'm not really in the "zine community", I just do a lot of hit or miss applications and hope my friends and I get in lol This is a great video though, seriously. Super enjoyable and very interesting !!

I've applied to a lot and I really love zines after buying one myself. I finally did get accepted, though it was a much smaller niche in the fandom. I want to join more of my interest and join others but my follower count isnt appealing to them nor my art skills. I'll still keep applying but its a heartbreak over the very many rejections i get. I can't tell if knowing the "choosing artists a lot based on their followers or connections" is reassuring to me or not but at least i know its not completely in my head. 🧡

I watched this video back when it was released, but now I wanted to come back and share my experience as a small artist. I have applied to 5 zines since that time, 4 of which are Genshin and I was surprised to be accepted for all of them. For the first one I had less than 1000 followers. For all the others I had barely more than 1000. I’m still at ~1200 followers right now. And for context, one of those Genshin zines accepted VERY FEW artists, less than 20 few. For the first one I applied to I expressed concern that they would choose contributors based on popularity, and they told me they wouldn’t consider that. There were even people complaining that their favorite artists who are more well known didn’t get in because of their choice to accept smaller artists. I like to think this represents a change in the mindset of the zine community and the moderators!

I joined a pretty big zine project back in 2019 and although there weren't much drama that went on I do think artists are being exploited for these types of things especially the people that wants to run the zine projects and profit. However, the project I entered was a nonprofit zine project so really it was a real passion project. Except there were a couple people in the project that wanted to profit off of it, the co-founder of the zine disagreed and the founder stormed off leaving the rest of the project to a single person. I still feel bad for the person that had to deal with their bullshit. We made the zine so we could give it to the creator of the fandom, everyone who donated for the zine got their copies of the zine. The project I believe went on for 7 months. I didn't like my artwork for the zine though, been thinking about recreating it and posting it for a throwback post since I never officially uploaded my artwork onto the internet. After all, I don't feel good looking at it since I was in such a dark time during then. By the way, the "founder" of that zine went off to make a Barbie zine, never really checked on them but I doubt they did anything further than just announcing their project.

I’ve noticed myself that in the mcyt fandom (more specifically hermit and traffic side) there’s a lot of non profit zines and are just for fun! However your point of artists mostly grouping up with their friends is a pattern I have noticed that for some zines which makes me a bit nervous to apply for these zines because a, my art skill might not be the same as their friends and b, my art folio might not be big enough. I do hope to join one one day but thank you for this video so I’m more well informed! :D

I think a really cool idea for a zine would be a small artist zine. Basically a zine where the requirement for participation is that you have to, as of the time of being accepted, have no more than 1,000 followers on your most popular social media.

So I have a little experience with zines. I have known of them since I was 20, I am in my early 30s now. I only purchased my first zine a couple years ago. I live the origins and how digital era has evolved to keep it alive among fandoms. Something you never hear are oc zines, in which I am hapoy now exist on specific sites. I have done two but the first girl kinda ditched and never at least updated despite seeing her on the site. I also applied for a third recently, and even though I could possibly be rejected I am still glad I did it as rejection hurts but never know unless you try. Zines vary from fandom to fandom and depends who is making them. Much like cosplay,conventions and fanfiction these aspects are what define fandom.

This really reminds me of my own experiences with zine applications. At the moment, I am creating an artwork for one zine and it was the first time I got accepted. This particular zine accepted people based on first come first serve, so popularity and skill didn't matter. Any other zine application (and I have applied for about 20 of them at this point) always ended up with a rejection. I applied to join different fandom and non-fandom zines. None of my social media accounts have more than 210 followers. I'm not a "bad" artist (heck, I'm an illustration student about to graduate, I know a thing or two about artwork.) and honestly, the idea that some moderators aim for specific artists or artists with a big following never crossed my mind.

It just kind of makes me sad about being in fandom. I want to to contribute to a fan zine for something I’m really into too! Not to say that the artist in the zine aren’t good. Just that I can produce work of the same quality or even better but I have a 100% rejection rate lolololol I’m a tad bitter 😅 Edited for auto correct error

The entire splatoon zine fandom is a massive biased clique. They open apps but every zine accepts the same group- the friends of the mods and other popular, well known artists. I seldom see any artists I don't recognize on artist lists and I've applied to dozens, rejected every time because like 2 people in this group have a grudge against me over a minor disagreement and thus, use their influence in this group to get me blacklisted from every zine in this fandom entirely.

At this point, the only things I can trust as close to old zines are convention artists. Making prints all year for the newest popular things, going to cons and selling them. Independent and gain money. I want to see a collab one, then maybe we might get them back.

I was thinking about starting a zine for a fandom I'm in but some of the popular artists have shown real stalker creepy behavior (long story short) in the past and they'd def be on my blacklist. Then there's hoards of people who think they did nothing wrong and would probably attack me for not including them.

the type of zines u were describing at the start still exist, but the more indie/small press/counter culture stuff are harder to come across on socmed without seeking them out specifically, usually cause it's something ppl usually give/sell to each other irl, and/or they cover niche topics that dont have the same virality as say. genshin. but a lot of photographers sell their work as zines, i have even seen a lot of artists sell their zines online, i have come across activists and small press orgs who give them for free or sell them too, and there are many of people who just make them for themselves and their friends. looking up "zine making" on youtube will give you so many vids about this type of zines also. i understand that u are referring to a specific type of zine community, which i also take part in, but i just felt a bit sad that u referred to the other types of zines purely in the past tense as if they dont exist anymore. im just in the first six minutes so sorry if u adress this later too... i'll delete if that's the case. i just think zines of all sorts are cool :)

if i ever rejected because i have 300 folowers on social media or favoritism - it's zines problem that they rejected awesome me. I really like how mine and other printed art looks like even when people are different art levels and art styles. Most of my experiences with zines is quite positive but I got mine grain of salt in one art community even when project was successful - it's still gives me flashbacks so i try to avoid too big projects or some other things i consider red flags.

So, I am a relatively new mod in another zine community and a lot of the problems you pointed out are... very real in our community too. Perhaps on a smaller scale, but still a massive issue. Over half the zines in the community seem to be run by the same group of people, and it seems like they come up with a new one every other week. Not for love or passion, but to make sure they're the first. One major problem we noticed is that any time they catch wind of someone else planning a zine, they rush to make the same zine first. I have seen so many examples of topic sniping from them, it's been frustrating and hurtful. They're already on so many projects at the same time, and they just feel hallow and unloved.

honestly, Not a fan of entry Zine for one chance because I’ve heard some people talk about it and they got rejected unlike other websites, Hoyoverse received some artists’ styles to win. I was discouraged and lacked motivation by both zine and contest because they always choose any artist who has the extreme skill and anime-style…..er…? semi-realistic? last night, one of my friends told me that “practice your skill when you’ll be successful”. I had chosen five different styles combination but just have no feeling about do anime style is not my teenager’s useful since nowadays also yes I am afraid of joining any fandom to make Zine
