Corsair Crazy! Eleven F4U Corsairs Flying Together! - Thunder Over Michigan 2019

The 2019 Thunder Over Michigan airshow featured the largest gathering of F4U Corsairs in decades. Eleven of these rare World War 2 fighters came together for one weekend. This video is a combination of footage from Saturday (all 11 flew) and Sunday (10 flew) and shows scenes from the ramp, the mass start, the simultaneous wing unfold, a mass run-up, lightning takeoffs, formation flybys, individual passes, taxi back, and shut down.

I had a post along long time ago right here on YOU TUBE stating that a man was assembling a fleet of these Corsairs. The reason I knew this is because I make certain parts 4 antique aircraft. I had a host of morons telling me they knew total number of these planes that are left in tact totaled less than 10 world wide. Here is the videos that proves those morons mute.

Approaching 93 (May 18) I’m hardly as sharp as I once was, but I still remember the blessing of flying the F4U off of the Philippine Sea, CVA 47, while in VF 113, (Air Group 11) during the Korean War in 1952. I was further blessed by being chosen by our squadron skipper to be his wingman after he had tried several of we junior officers to see if we could stay with him. You might find it interesting to look him up on line. In WW2 he was two short of being a triple ace. His name was John R Strane. Obviously combat can get a little hairy at times, especially when you take a 37mm in the engine area and you see the needle on your cockpit fuel pressure indicator back off to zero (pucker time). I was blessed in that all that was cut was the static line to the indicator In the cockpit. The main fuel line was fine, I flew back to the carrier and the excellent maintenance crew did their thing.

My father piloted “Whistling Death” from "The Blue Ghost" USS Lexington CV-16. He loved that plane. In his last days, lying in his bed he was moving his hands oddly. I asked “What are you doing Dad? He said “I’m flying the Corsair” Makes me tearful to think about this.

@@DerekFletcher1 Thanks ! and a gentleman. He was flying a scouting mission to make sure the enemy was not rebuilding bases on a recently captured island. Zooming up the beach about 50 feet high, he saw a few straglers having a campfire on the beach. When they became aware of his F4U, panic set in. Half ran into the jungle, the rest into the water. He said it would have been easy to waste them all with the six Browning M2 .50 cals on board. Determining they were no threat,(small island that was not going to be occupied) he let them live.. To have shot them to peices would have been murder. I wonder if they told their kids of this? I'd love to meet them.

My Dad also flew Corsairs, he flew -4's in Korea. He passed away 2 months before I retired from the USCG, and it broke my heart...I really wanted him to see me complete my service. I will always remember his office, the art and trinkets he had, and also talking to John Bolt, my Dad's CO at some point, talking to him as a youngster hanging on coat tails at a Marines convention of sorts, hearing about what a shit my Dad was as a young Marine. The folks who flew these are unfortunately going away. cherish the stories, and listen!

@@robertmantell1700 So true. I loved listening to his stories also. Flying on a training mission six miles off the coast of Molokai, the oil line broke and he had to bail. He swam to the island which was almost all jungle at the time. Other planes pointed the way as he could not see it from the "Drink" as he called the water. Finally made it back to his unit. The commander sat him down and asked "What the hell happened to the plane?"

I don't think anybody knew that many R still flying and in perfect condition... I just heard as of Nov 2020 they found like 20 of em still wrapped in cosmoline rags out on some very remote USA controlled island. I seen pics a buddy of mine took he said it was Tarawa Island. Said when he was there the last of em came out of the cave in nearly whole but in pieces all wrapped in tons of plastic steel bands and oil cloth wrappers. My buddy has never been known to be full I shit either... I DID ASK THE QUESTION SINCE I DEAL WITH THIS VINTAGE HARDWARE MYSELF DID THEY HAVE PLASTIC BACK IN THE 40'S BECAUSE TO MY KNOWLEDGE THEY WERE JUST DEVELOPING THE TECH HERE IN THE USA BACK IN THE 1950 CIRCA. OR IS IT MORE POSSIBLE THE STUFF WAS TENDED TO OVER THE YEARS HENCE HOW THEY AH FOUND THE SHIT.... I AM AWAITING A VIDEO... FROM SOMEONE FROM ANYONE. LT. MATT T. I had an uncle who flew a Corsair in both World War 2 and Korea. Had his left thumb shot off by flak during an airstrike in North Korea which ended his flying career. Three-War Marine: WW2, Korea and Vietnam. He loved his Corsairs. Gone now and I still miss him.

I don't know why, but I've always had a deep love for these old WWII planes. They're beautiful and the sound of those engines is like none other. What a sight. I love the Corsair. When I was a little boy a neighbour gave me this fantasticly detailed metal model of a Corsair. It was beautiful. Looked just like the one with the chequered details on the nose and tail paintwork. I’ve loved the Corsair ever since. I wish I still had that model plane now. It was a beaut!

Met Pappy at OshKosh years ago and got his book. A few weeks later I ran into Joe Foss and got him to autograph a book about him published in 1943. Very nice gent and so down to earth. Joe flew Wildcats in Guadalcanal Canal but later flew Corsairs in mostly ground-air missions. Sadly, they've left the formation like so many of their comrades.

What an amazing sight to see. I saw my first corsair on the U.S.S Midway in San Diego. It has been my favorite plane ever since. At a warbird fly-in, I got to speak with a Marine corps veteran who shot down two enemy planes while flying the corsair in the Pacific. I won't ever forget that experience.

Forward air control team, whip antenna on my back, aircraft made a run at our position, I counted the rivets on the fuselage as he removed the top two sections on my antenna. Great pilots, they made the difference in the war.

Though I just turned 50 - - I can still smile, feeling as if I was that wee lad with him by my side @ Kirtland A.F.B. (Albq., NM) during the Air Shows he would take our whole Famn-Damily to! As a kid, one of my FAVE all-time shows (to this day) was The Black Sheep Squadron & Robert Conrad as the legendary "Pappy". 👍 Right now I just got a little misty eyed when the beautiful Stars 'n' Stripes went up on those wings, as they were retracted for Carrier maneuvers - - what a sight they must have been on ANY of our wonderful Flat-Tops! 😎 Fast forward to '96, I bought a '95 Chevy CORSAIR & everytime I saw that name on my trunk, I'd chuckle to myself & think "Oh how I wish it were the PLANE.". Now I have a '16 Challenger & it's my mission to own a HELLCAT (God willing, I'd be able to say, I had a Corsair & a Hellcat but they were real Demons to get off the ground). To make a "short story long", my FAVE aircraft is #1) SR-71 Blackbird; 2nd) the F4U Corsair & then tied for 3rd) - - the awesome F/A-18 Hornet & the F-16 Fighting Falcon. (Reason for them: I salute & would love to see the Navy Blue Angels for my 1st time & the Air Force Thunderbirds HAVE ALWAYS delighted my Family & I.) Just to shake the hand of any of the pilots & maybe touch any one of those unbelievable aircraft - - I would die a happy man. People - - give a little salute to all of our boys & girls who became women & men behind the stick. As they are the Angels on high, so often providing needed support to our men & women on the ground!!! God bless these United States & everyone who's contributed to it's SUCCESS!

On takeoff, you don't. there's so much torque and P-F that you ease the throttle up- notice how they didn't blast off? Also needs a lot of rudder to hold it. But, yeah, i share that thought. 150 to 400 in zap time?

If only someone got a couple F9F Panthers flying again, one of the most beautiful jet aircraft ever made along with the Sabre. The Korean War truly was the golden age of aircraft designs (at least from an aesthetic perspective). Corsairs, Panthers, Sabres, Shooting Stars and yes, Mustangs at least in the early days of the conflict (with B-29s making a dramatic return as the bombers).

I used to work on the Blue Max Corsair back in the late 70's and early 80's. What a phenomenal aircraft! I was only in my teens back then, but I remember it like it was yesterday
