Someone has sat on this USB Drive (OK, it was me) and now it doesn't work.
Let's see if we can fix it!

That's actually one of the cool thing about the USB protocol, it is SO rock simple, unless the chips are damaged, you can fix it, REALLY easily.

I also have a flash voyager USB drive I bought many years ago. I once dropped it on the street without realizing it, found it the next day and from the tire marks on it, it obviously got ran over by a car. Surpringly it still worked. Still works to this day.

I found a Voyager USB drive in motorway service station once, same condition - tyre marks and gravel rash. Pried the case apart to ensure it wasn't a USB-killer then plugged it in. It had a student's university project work on it but sadly there was no identifying or contact information on it so I was unable to return it. It still works now.

They don't need to be stood or sat on to break those connections. As you will have discovered, it's a very weak mechanical connection between the USB connector and the board. Btw, the rubber enclosure does pull off. I have one in the same condition as yours.

Too funny, I have that exact stick sitting on my desk torn apart. I put a thermal camera on it and found the smaller square chip burning up. Found the short and popped the offending component off. Still works to this day. I wouldn't put anything important on it with a component missing though.

Oh wow! I have a few of those drives with tools & windows installers on. That gel looks like its to block moisture getting into the USB port maybe? Now I wonder how that Pin got there, maybe someone tried to pull the port, then forced it back in? Now I have a video to refer to If I break! my own 😁👍🏻

Thanks Steve! Yeah, you're probably spot on there, it'll be some kind of silicone or similar. I must've bent up that pin when I gave it a wiggle, can't see how else it would have ended up like that! I have a few of these drives too, they're pretty old now but I've always found them to be super reliable! 👌

I always keep mine on lanyards! hung up like my test cables out the way, until needed. They are very good! also the brand Transcend are reliable too! I had a Kingston that died & the others lived! 😎

😁 It was at the pub, so it could've been stood on, sat on, or pretty much anything else you can imagine! I've never really liked Kingston, they always seem to fail on me. Their SD cards in particular! 😳

Oh that explains it, drunk people on a lock in, watching porn on a USB stick, one of them sees, there mum & sister and lost it! That's how it got broke, I see. 😂🤣 Truuuue! Kingston SD/USB have never been great! But the PC RAM is not bad.

I know, i fully expected it to be four pulled pads when I opened it up! I was quite lucking forward to practicing my trace repair again, but I'll take it. It's really solid now and I think it'll be a lasting repair! 🤞

You can just slide the inner shell out of the flexible outer casing. You didn't need to cut it, that was pointless.

Whomever set that USB stick up really likes NSync. They've used the ol' directory trick of putting an underscore ("_") before the filename so the computer thinks it is first.
