What is the purpose of a waist-tape? Does it just add extra security to keep the corset from stretching or tearing?

Hello. Should I wash the coutil before I use it? I normally wash all my fabric before sewing but wasnt sure if it will shrink it at the washing point and slowly stretch once its in use??

Thank you Lucy! I am making my first corset with the help of your videos. However, I already sewed everything together! Can I still put in a waist tape or would it even need it? It is a costume piece and will be worn only to conventions. It's not meant for cinching in really tight because it will lace in the front and back.

When you are marking on the waist tape, are you just outlining the shape of each panel onto it? And I couldn't quite tell which part of the corset you were attaching it to.....Is it the seem allowance on each of the lining panels?

So it starts between 1&2 and ends between 5&6? Or is there some way to secure the front and back (since the stitch in the ditch doesn't affect those seams)?

+zeldanoid I make the waist tape long enough to extend all the way from the center front seam to the center back seam. At 3:10 of the video, I explain how even though I'm marking panel 2 there, I'm leaving enough space to include panel 1. And at 5:50 or so, you'll see that the waist tape is secured from panel 1 to panel 6. I hope that makes sense!

For two of the corsets I made so far, after sewing the waist tape into the seam allowences, when I flip the corset so the tape is on the inside, some places have excess waist tape all of a sudden. The last corset I made was a little better and just had excess on the busk panels. If I'm measuring correctly, why is this happening or how can I prevent this?

I know that when I do get back into sewing and get my area set up, I definitely will not be able to undertake a corset right off the bat. Do you have any beginner to rusty novice suggestions for projects or resources? Or perhaps you could do a video about your sewing background and how best to go about improving seamstress skills? I'm entirely self taught, and sometimes feel a bit overwhelmed :)

Sorry, but what did you line the fashion fabric with? In your last video you recommended we try not to use the fashion fabric as top layer for boning channel because it'll tear through.

A traditional busk is stronger, hook and eye will eventually fail but a busk can last for decades, even centuries.
