Bass virtuoso "Jeff Berlin" stopped by and eventually made Julia play his signature bass. Do you think she has been practicing long enough to convince the fusion and modern jazz bassist?
#thoNAMM20 audio quality is made possible with the support from Izotope and Sennheiser USA.

It seems to me that Jeff either doesn't know how to use a metronome properly or had bad experiences with it over the years.
@jrosner6123
@jrosner6123 4 жыл бұрын
@@BrunodeSouzaLino Actually, his take on metronomes: you can't practice, with a metronome or drum machine, what you dont know how to play. He gives an example of Gary Burton using one AFTER mastering the mechanics of his instrument, in order to correct certain things he heard. Jeff just used to present it with a confrontational premise. I never understood why people didn't get the actual point. Many a proper educator will present things in a way that is designed to force their students into an uncomfortable position. Would you want a boxing coach that lets you win, rigs your sparring matches, and only shows you what you WANT to learn, for fear of offending you? Law of averages says you'd be drummed out in a competition's qualifying phase with ease, if you made it that far in the first place.
@BrunodeSouzaLino
@BrunodeSouzaLino 4 жыл бұрын
As an educator, if people don't get what you're trying to explain, you either are explaining it wrong or poorly. Not spoon feeding information is one thing. Explaining something in a way that makes people think you are against something when you're not is another. Just go look at any clinic Jeff has done on KZbin and watch how he responds when people ask about practicing with a metronome.

You can learn scales and theory without learning to read music. His logic is kinda flawed. Great player though!
@makichas

He started by saying," there's two ways to learn how to play the bass." One being to learn how to read. I hear that listening is also a trait of a competent musician.
@xneurianx
@xneurianx 4 жыл бұрын
@@makichas Yes. Two ways. But he very heavily implies that autodidactic learning is worse, because learning to read music is the only way to understand theory. It is not.
@dannellim11
@dannellim11 4 жыл бұрын
Can't fault him though! And generally most popular music teachers are those who journeyed via sheet music! You don't see self taught players like Mike dirnt, John entwistle teaching bass lessons! If they would, they would probably preach the self taught method too! Not against either, just noticing this trend haha

Berlin and his reading music nonsense. Hendrix didn't read music. Learn by ear. Much more important.
@jrosner6123
@jrosner6123 4 жыл бұрын
He preaches that, too. Gave a series of free YT videos on how to transcribe by ear, learn by ear. Why not go check out his jeff Berlin music group channel? His premise has ALWAYS been this: if you're learning by ear, and that's your goal, you shouldn't have to pay someone to show you licks. I learned by ear, and later studied music both privately and in college. It certainly expanded my viewpoint, and capabilities. I still encounter lots of good " ear only " musicians, but they actually have picked up on useful musical info along the way- some haven't, and they aren't gonna get a call when you need a quick study, or a proper stand in.
@HigherGroundCC
@HigherGroundCC 4 жыл бұрын
Did hendrix play jazz; baroque; fusion? No. He only played blues... You do not need to read sheet music to play the blues... But who cares right? Hendrix is the pinnacle of taste and musicality, right?
@jrosner6123
@jrosner6123 4 жыл бұрын
@@HigherGroundCC you're throwing a weak strawman argument here. Not every musician reads, but reading doesnt hurt. For every Hendrix, theres a million players who wont qualify for the gigs they would like, because they lack the skill base needed. Not everyone needs to read, but why not work at anything that might improve your game?
@kevgamble
@kevgamble 4 жыл бұрын
You don't seem to know much about Berlin's beliefs on the matter. He places a great deal of importance on the self-taught aspect. With reading, he's just saying, correctly, that learning to read opens a huge world of potential. And he sets these two approaches above other methods (schools and other educational tools) that, in essence, spend time teaching you what you should be learning on your own (groove, feel, etc.). So in a way, he agrees with you more than you think.
@fearnoevil65
@fearnoevil65 11 ай бұрын
The "(insert idol) didn't learn to read music and they did pretty good" is really a lame analogy and doesn't apply to most people. Everyone plays by ear and is self taught, learning to read music is good also. Jazz Band in High School taught reading music, basic theory, ear training and playing live. They're all important IMHO
