There must be something wrong with my headphones when I'm playing this remake. I didnt care for this song much when i fought Cortez. But listening to it again on youtube I acrually think its pretty good. I think it misses a little without the bongos, but its still good. What I'm trying to keep in mind as a long time paper mario fan, is that this is a remake with new stuff. And new is good. If i wanted it all to be exactly the same, i can slap on the nostalgic tunes badge or play my gamecube original. But i specifically was pumped as hell for this remake. And its still good. I just think as a 29 year old man whos played ttyd probably over 15 times growing up, the charm isnt the same as it was when i was like 9 or 10

Look like what you like and all that, not saying this is a bad piece in a vacuum, it’s actually pretty damn good on its own, but I think this song is a prime example of some of the old unique vibe that each boss track had in the original In GC, every boss track had a distinct vibe and instrumentation that made each altercation a completely different experience from the last: Hooktail Battle was a good starter track to establish a vibe of fighting the familiar but turned on its side: the song feels like a standard boss fight song, but there’s enough keeping you on your toes that your senses don’t glaze over Magnus Von Grapple made t sound like you were facing down a LITERAL tank, with all the bombast and mechanical sounds it warranted, striking the ear as more of a battle march (mirroring the way the X-Nauts, this new threat of an army, marched on the Great Tree and imposed themselves on everything within) Grubba’s fight, my beloved, sounded so ALIEN and intense WITHOUT SHREDDING GUITARS IN MY EAR; given the difficulty spike between the last chapter boss and this one, and all the random stat buffs Grubba applies to himself, the track communicates that while you might’ve gotten familiar with the controls of the game by this point, NOW you need to familiarize yourself with how game-changing status-inflicting attacks can be, that one of the most satisfying ways to succeed in this game is to do the same as Grubba and fill your kit with abilities that can nerf your opponents and buff yourself Doopliss, another favorite, is dark and creepy but with an air of playful malice that seeps through its pores while keeping the track upbeat overall. It sounds just like the character you’re fighting: a mean little spooky gremlin that’s yukking it up the whole time until the fight is over Cortez’s original fight I adored for having a similar trait to Doopliss’s fight: the song SOUNDS like the character you’re fighting; however, instead of sounding like a spooky little sadistic prankster, this sounds like cutlasses at daybreak with the scourgiest scourge of the seven seas who’s so strong he literally cannot die. The song doesn’t make it sound like this is a fight you can WIN, not by DEFEATING Cortez rather that it’s a fight that you can only win by proving your own mettle as a swashbuckler The Smorg boss fight track (I haven’t gotten to it in the remaster but I can only assume it also takes the death metal approach), while not character focused, as the Smorgs are more of a horror movie monster than an actual band of characters, sells the frenetic energy of saving the people you’ve helped and grown attached to on the train ride on the TOP OF A SPEEDING TRAIN I’m sure someone who’s actually studied music in-depth could give a better explanation than I did about this weird dissonance, but I just feel like something was lost in the jump between consoles sound-wise (yes this includes SFX but that’s another can of worms), so it boggles my brain seeing almost unanimous praise for something that’s effectively been made more uniform

Volume/dynamics aren’t the only way to express chaos in music, there are notes that are clashing in the melody to get that chaotic feel done. Have you tried hooking up the console to a sound system or speaker? Might help remedy the quietness.

I do like the remixed music a lot. I still have a special place for the OG soundtrack, but in general the new music hits harder for sure. The only song so far that hasn’t been all that for me is the title screen theme. It’s just missing something. Otherwise though, love the music!

They heavy metal is a nice touch but when you start adding too many instruments, you drown out the melody and rhythm with disorganization. It makes the flow chaotic and not cohesive. The same producer as TOKs ost made the soundtrack for the remake. The original is great too but I feel like the producer just user their own music style to make songs. I personally like the rock they put in many songs but I do agree that a lot of songs with rock. Still a very good song in both versions though imo
