Hi Tom, You might recall that I have only discovered your videos on YT very recently. I am seriously impressed with your extensive knowledge and it is a privilege to hear accounts from someone who knew Bruce Lee and who has first hand knowledge of things which happened in Bruce's era. This video is no exception. I have two questions please Sir, if I may. Firstly, what prompted your investigation in 1992, 19 years after Bruce's death? Secondly, you mentioned insurance claims in USA and here in UK, in which the insurers refused to pay out, presumably on life policies. Did those claims go to trials or reach settlements, or were they not resolved at all, please? Best regards, Glyn

Hello, Glyn, and thanks for your post. The answer to your first question is covered in detail in my first video "Tom Bleecker's Book Trilogy on Martial Arts Icon Bruce Lee." With regard to your second question, the answers are on the video "Foul Play" (I think. If not that video, it's on one of the others). Thank you for your kind words. In 1992 when I did the majority of my research, I believed there were two plausible causes of Bruce's death - cortisone abuse or foul play (someone recently mentioned the possibility of a combination of those two, which is possible). A couple of years ago, I was pleased that the renowned medical examiner Dr. Richard Hunter essentially agreed with one of my theories that Bruce died from cortisone abuse. This was before, however, Bruce's extensive drug use came to light, which adds credence to the notion that he died of a cocaine overdose or possibly even a poisonous mushroom. So, three decades later, with all that is now known, I am leaning toward foul play being the cause of Bruce's death. Thanks for your comments!

Thanks, Tom. Are you aware of the Bob Baker letters that were auctioned earlier this year by Baker's daughter? Well, the letters reveal that Bruce had a sizeable cocaine habit while living in Hong Kong. Hi, Mr. Bleecker, I read something on Quora claiming that "Doctor Donald Teare, a forensic pathologist, recommended by Scotland Yard, who at the time had completed over 1,000 autopsies, was assigned to determine Bruce Lee's cause of death...... the exhaustive autopsy noted no signs of malnourishment or weakness, or signs of any substance abuse, indeed, it noted the opposite." What is your opinion on this assertion in regard to your claim that cortisone may have caused Bruce lee's death?
@TomBleecker2 жыл бұрын
Actually, Dr. Teare claimed to have completed 90,000 autopsies and testified in over 8,000 inquests. The main reason he was summoned was to testify that the marijuana found in Bruce's stomach wasn't enough to have killed him. In my view, Dr. Teare had little to no credibility. Second, the autopsy wasn't exhaustive, and there were no statements in the autopsy that referred to substance abuse or malnourishment. I agree with Dr. Richard Hunter that there is strong medical evidence that Bruce may have succumbed to full adrenal failure caused by his overuse of cortisone.

This was one busy man. Figuring a five-day work week, with not one single day’s absence for either vacation or illness, Teare was able to average ten autopsies per day, in addition to slipping in appearances at two separate inquest hearings every working day for thirty-five years! And this was in London where the police don’t even carry guns! On the other hands there are so many others action movie stars who used drugs and steroids and they still are alive. Jean Claude Van Damme had a very strong cocaine habit, Schwarzenegger and Stallone used steroids for gran part of their life and albeit all these actors ruined part of their wellness with these dangerous habits, they are still alive. But regard Bruce we are talking about early 70s, there was less information about drugs and other medicine than 80’s and 90’s, so maybe back then was easier overdo about it. Moreover, Bruce was been the first action movie star, maybe he thought to be invincible, probably a combination of cocaine and cortisone killed him or maybe how you mentioned before a foul play was been the reason, because the cocaine could been contaminated, anyway independently from what angle we want see this fact, it's clear that if he never had that dangerous habits he would be still alive. Dr. Richard Hunter, M.E. did a thorough examination of Bruce's medical records and autopsy reports. Are you purposely trying to duplicate Bruce's moves, perhaps because you want to be known as a Bruce Lee impersonator? Or is what I'm seeing in the video your expression of your martial art? If that latter, Bruce was adamant in stating that he did not want people to try to copy what he does, and it was because of this concern that he told Dan Inosanto to close the LA Chinatown school. Put another way, Bruce said "express yourself," not others. Ed Parker added to this thought when he pointed out that what worked for Bruce Lee might well get others killed. All this said, I encourage you to continue to work out in the hope that you'll find your own expression of your personal martial art, as did Bruce. Cheers

@TomBleecker2 жыл бұрын
My understanding is that Bruce suffered from Addison's Disease that developed over many months. Because of his overuse of cortisone, his body's normal production of cortisol shut down. This is similar to when a person takes anabolic steroids, the body's normal production of testosterone shuts down. When the person stops taking anabolic steroids, his body will gradually increase its production of testosterone. But with corticosteroids, in the case of "fight or flight," the body doesn't have the liberty of gradually resuming the production of this hormone. Or in Bruce's case, his adrenal glands permanently shut down, which resulted in death from adrenal failure when his cortisone was cut off. As an aside, I'm not aware of any hair follicle samples, although blood samples were taken. www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/addisons-disease/symptoms-causes/syc-20350293

@@timstevens4925 The interaction of the drugs Bruce was taking, as well as the imbalances they caused, is extremely complex, which is why I relied on a team of medical/science professionals to sort it out through the use of Bruce's medical records from the cradle to the grave, so to speak. Besides the team I assembled, I believe Dr. Richard Hunter also did an excellent job and came to the same conclusion. From what I was told, the lack of Bruce's body to produce cortisone (in the absence of what he was taking) is related to this "fight or flight." Of course, with his adrenal glands being compromised, this would have hindered his production of Adrenalin. This is an excerpt from my book: "The central problem confronting Bruce Lee as a result of his extended use of cortisone was that the drug had caused his adrenal glands to atrophy and, as a result, his body’s natural ability to produce hydrocortisone had been dramatically decreased. One major function of this steroid is to support circulation in cases of stress. When a normal person develops an illness or sustains an injury, the adrenal glands “kick out” a “booster dose” of hydrocortisone to help maintain capillary tone and support blood pressure. If a patient with adrenal atrophy sustains an injury or develops an illness, there is no hydrocortisone to be kicked out and the capillary system can collapse, and death ensues." One reason Bruce had such a miraculous recovery when admitted to Baptist Hospital on May 10th is that the doctors gave him a shot of cortisone. As an aside, I can assure you that Bruce was fully capable of fighting, and I say this from firsthand experience. Thanks for the back and forth.
@shihanUKS3 жыл бұрын
The cortisone theory does have weight in context with those systems. But did he have his under arm sweat glands removed or didn't he? July 20th of 73 really was HOT and HUMID that day. Bruce never handled heat and humidity very well even before any alleged surgery of that nature. Right? If he did do that, he made it worse for himself. Street drugs and pain killers use up a lot of water in your system. Add that to a man who would sweat a lot. And he did hash July 20th. And he drank soda which also dehydrates (the sugar). Heat stroke or Cortisone abuse? Both have similar symptoms. Did one bring on the other? What about that drug called hype? I can't help thinking where Bruce's head was when Dr. Peter Wu laid it out for him off the record, a huge favor, about the hash and God knows what else they found IF they ran a tox screen at the time. It was clear. They saved his life. Pumped his stomach. He was told. Linda sitting right there, a party to the hash cookie back yard after workout gatherings, hearing her husband tell a medical authority "Steve McQueen does it and it didn't bother him." And that was compounded by the attitudes of those UCLA doctors who "experimented" with recreational drugs themselves. Then the life insurance saying he never did drugs on the application. What was he thinking? He was thinking like one who was being swallowed up in seventies Hong Kong. Wu called it. He said Bruce would be back. He told Dr. Don Langford, who was never interviewed after Lee's death nor during the inquest, that Lee, strung out by a more powerful drug, his own hype, was coming back. And he did. Under a sheet.
@TomBleecker3 жыл бұрын
First, Bruce did have some of the sweat glands under his arms removed for the simple reason that he sweated far too much. There are many photos of him wearing a shirt, and his armpits are soaked. Second, the human body has hundreds of thousands of sweat glands used to throw off excess water. As an aside, millions of people use antiperspirants daily that block their sweat glands from sweating. On the day of Bruce's death, I would ask where and when did this alleged heatstroke initiate? Was it when he was at his air-conditioned home in Kowloon or during the drive to Betty's in Raymond's air-conditioned car or was it at Betty's air-conditioned apartment? As an aside, I can't recall a reference that stated that Bruce partook in hash on the day he died or that his stomach was pumped on May 10th? Also, there was no drug screen run on May 10th. Lastly, Dr. Langford was interviewed after Lee's death. I believe the interview is on KZbin, and I think he testified at the inquest, but I'd have to check the transcripts. Thanks for your excellent and very thoughtful post.
