If you get a Cortisone Shot to “treat” your Tennis Elbow, what's the long-term cost? - goo.gl/Ms72k
Corticosteroid injections are well-known for their ability to magically (but often temporarily) dissolve Tennis Elbow pain in the short term…
However, numerous medical studies over decades, show that these powerful steroid shots can also “dissolve” your tissues!
Potentially weakening your tendons, causing atrophy and degeneration - And even possibly leading to tearing or rupture, in the long term.
Apparently, without offering any tangible benefits to your healing process, either!
Are these shots worth the risk?

I suppose it depends upon how much damage from tennis elbow you caused. If the damage is extensive, then a shot may be good for possible a few weeks. If not, then it would work for a lit longer. Note that there can be more to pain than just from inflammation. The cortisone may have taken away the inflammation pain, however, continuing to damage the tendons will also cause pain (more like a sharp pain than an aching pain you get from inflammation).

My injury is partial tear of ligament and my doctor is just diagnosing it as tendinitis. The tear was 5mm long at one stage and repaired to 2mm and now I’ve torn it again to 7mm. Cortisone helps, I couldn’t handle the pain anymore 😕 I’ve had PRP, shock wave therapy and am on BPC 157 and TB 500 daily injections.. I’m doing KZbin physical therapy on it 🤣 it’s already cost me a fortune lol hopefully it heals again soon, thank you for the video and channel.. I will be watching your videos for advice 😌

I had two shots, b/c I have golfers AND tennis elbow. Cortisone works great on my back but it flared my elbow so extremely badly I couldn’t move it. It was even more painful than before I got it. Terrible mistake.

Wish I saw this video earlier. 2 years ago had the TE and got a HC shot. Was pain free for 6 months and as a resukt Lifted alot over this time. Month 7 my grip reduced and pain started setting in. Had an MRI scan and there was a 50% tear of the extensor, to which the doc suggested another HC shot! Pain didnt go away and had surgery. Was fine after 6 months. But restarted training and the pains slowly coming back now with the golfers side too. What are your views on Blood Plasma therapy (PRP)? And on Ozone injections (oxygen)? Many thanks for the views on your videos. Cheers. PS - I ice my arm everyday after the gym. Some times heat cream. Will this help?

I finally had to go get a shot after 9/10 months of pain and hearing advice like that in this video. I tried physical therapy and it only ever slightly improved, with no real healing ever happening and pain returning in waves. I think the reason so many people end up with worse conditions is because they use the shot as a way to get back playing tennis or doing whatever it was that injured them in the first place instead of using the shot as a way to aid in regeneration and rehabilitation. The shot isn't what's causing the degeneration of the joint, it's the actions of the injured person and the ignorance of what is actually happening to their joint.

@TennisElbowClassroom

We're not talking about joints here - we're talking about tendons - and Cortisone has been proven to weaken and degrade collagen, which is what the tendon is mostly composed of. Repeated shots cause or exacerbate degeneration. I think you make a very important point, though. People don't think rationally. After the shot (if it succeeds in suppressing their symptoms) they assume "No pain now? - I'm good to go!" No, you're not. It's not much different than thinking you're good to keep driving if your engine warning light starts flashing and you simply cover it up so you can't see it.

Worst mistake I ever made! Dealing with the worst pain ever! First my elbow, turned white, and my elbow looks “skinny” the doctor told me he is now sending me to the surgeon! He said the shot broke down the cartilage and may have gone to the bone! I am in so much pain!

I recently got the shot and it is definitely helping. I am, however, scared of when it wears off. My doctor told me for this particular problem that you only get ONE shot and you can't do anymore for fear of rupturing the tendon.

Thank you for sharing your experience. Mi elbow pain started 3 months ago. Dry needle/ physiotherapy made it much much worse, so I got the shot 3 weeks ago for epicondylitis and it improved my pain by 60 %. But the muscle/tendon is still tender. Its frustrating. I am hopeful that I should wait… When did you really got better after the steroid shot?

I got a cortisone shot and it wore off but it turned my skin white around the injection area and I won’t get another one I’m stuck with tennis elbow for my life cause of a healed fracture I never got surgery for…. Unfortunately, that de-pigmentation side effect can last a really long time. Years. I don't know if there's anything you can do about it. Maybe. I've never looked into it. I would not assume it's hopeless that you'll ever recover from your Tennis Elbow, though!

I had the same whiting on both arms, as I have tennis elbow in both arms. I had 2 injections in each arm starting late 2020 to early 2022. I will say that prior to the whitening, the injection area was kinda blackish-grey, then it turned white. The skin even appeared as if it was thinning. It was extremely noticeable, I received comments daily which was annoying and made me very self conscious. FINALLY my natural pigment has returned this past fall. The injections only helped for 3 months. The pain worse each time after it wore off. Ive done a variety of modalities to help and nothing has helped. Currently I’m just doing massage therapy and chiropractic care. The pain is manageable for the most part. I was a massage therapist for 8 years and had I known I’d be dealing with this pain for 3 years now, I would’ve quit after 5 years. Good luck to you

I don't think I put my PRP video up here on KZbin, but here on my site you'll find my article and video about it: tenniselbowclassroom.com/treatments/platelet-rich-plasma-for-treating-tennis-elbow-does-it-work/ PRP takes the completely opposite approach from a Cortisone Shot. Instead of suppressing inflammation and other symptoms, the intention with PRP is to stimulate healing by causing new trauma to the tendon and setting off a new round of inflammation, repair and regeneration - aided, in theory, by the platelets and other growth factors in your own "re-injected," concentrated plasma. I think it makes sense for some sufferers if they have a significant tear or other measurable damage and are already looking at the possibility of surgery - but, if I was in that situation, I would skip it and go straight to TenJet or Tenex, which have the ability to precisely remove damaged, degenerated tendon tissue. Seems much more focused and less traumatic. (Also likely covered by insurance, which PRP is likely not.)

Without a shot, you'll have to rest your arm for at least 6 months with some stretching and maybe physical therapy. Unfortunately, until then if you get back on the court you'll be in a lot of pain. The shot is localised and its very little compared to tablet. It won't weaken your immunity

Hi Cheri, I don't want to claim that castor oil packs won't help relieve your symptoms (they may - I'm a big advocate of using heat, and that's one way to do it) but if your question is "Will they help my Tennis or Golfer's Elbow heal!?" I don't see how. Some of the members of my program have talked in our forum about trying them - but no one has reported any benefits - even symptom relief (But, one guy ruined some nice sheets by having oil leak out of the packs overnight!)
