Thanks so much, Lyle! I’m about to get my 1st ‘Vette, a 2001-2004 C5, still looking, but expect to need new tires. Didn’t know anything about run-flats vs. regular tires. However, with your info I think I’ll go with non-run flats. Performance to me, especially in any ‘Vette, is really important. I have my high-quality Griots Garage small air compressor and a couple cans of fix a flat plus a plug kit ready! Love your vids!

As far as I know, if you drive in Spain (an possibly othe European countries), you need run-flats or a spare wheel. I once relied on that foam stuff but the piece of metal that caused the puncture went in through the tread and out through the sidewall (of a conventional tyre) so the foam was useless.

Good Morning Lyle, wondering if you could answer a question or do a vid re C6 replacement headlights. Morimoto seems to be the best but they're pretty pricey. When I factor in sales tax & installation costs, I'm approaching $2,000. There are so many other things I want to do with my '08 Z51 coupe (on a limited budget) that I'm looking for alternatives. I saw a set of Akkons listing for about $835 on Amazon. The reviews are positive. Would certainly appreciate your thoughts. Thanks!

When I bought my C6 Convertible, the first thing I did, take off the (almost new!) Run Flats and installed a set of Michelins. Aside from the obvious handling advantage I looked at my other two cars and how often in the past 10 or so years did I have flat Tires-2, that’s two! One thing I also have is CAA (AAA-US) it seems funny , if the deletion of a “Spare” was saving weight, using the EMTs , their extra weight negated much of this logic. So far, after driving this C6 about ten Years, No Flat. Maybe lucky, who knows?
@hydevanbrutton15166 жыл бұрын
hi, I like the drive my c6 all year long if I can. not in snow, but yes in the cold, dry, wet, or summer roads. I currently have the Goodyear eagle EMT ( 10 years old with 30k ish miles that are due for new tires soon esp in the front not so much in the rear). Would prefer run flats so I don't have to worry when im driving through a big city or out of state. but I like the input you made out the difference. If I did go with a new tire what would you recommend. I like Michelins and have notice an overall better response and quality over the years. They have a pilot super sport zp and a A/S 3 Zp. The goodyear has been decent. I was not aware that it was direction and I could not switch them for control some wear. Also I did know that driving your summer tire below 40 degrees could cause it to wear more.

I have two cars with run flat tires, never again! The in dash readings change everyday! The totes seem to loose pressure offen. Sometimes on the rear drivers side other times rear passenger side? On both cars! 2016 Corvette Z51-2LT and a 2019 infinity QX50. So you put air in and now you drive always and the read 33-33 then 33-35 some days 33-27. 33-25! Every dealer says you have a leak, if I have a leak why don’t they show something on the tire? Their a lot of money for Nothing!

You are correct. Ride is much. much quieter with regular tires. Got AAA Road side assistance Gold with 100 mile towing. And air compressor in trunk with can of tire leak sealer.
@jonesygw6 жыл бұрын
Apparently the can of tire foam is corrosive , not only will it possibly damage your tire pressure monitor, it will void any warranty on the tire and eat away at the rubber inside the tire. This info is direct from a tire shop.

Thanks Lyle. Your video convinced me to purchase regular tires before shipping the car over to Europe - the tires were 18 yrs old so I figured they needed to be replaced. But now I have a question for you: If one uses a can of fix-a-flat, or slime, or equivalent, will the air pressure sensor inside the tire be negatively affected? Again, thank you so much for your videos!!!
@csvette3 жыл бұрын
It can kill the sensor, but you will end up replacing the sensor when you put on a new tire. The bigger issue is how the slime can solidify in one lump if the car is parked while it is still somewhat liquid and cause the wheel to be out of balance. Far better than walking to the next service station, tho! :) Lyle

FYI ... c8 .. comfort level non run flat vs run flat ... tire rack testing ... ( michelin) comfort level the same .... ( so maybe I'm missing something here ... ) I think this applies to the older run flats ... I have a z51 c8 & I wanted to change but after conversation s on c8 forum & test results I decided to not make the change

I have heard this from others as well...the EMT technology has advanced a lot in the late C7 / C8 era. I still advocate for choosing normal tires for the c5 and the c6, but am open to the idea that the newer versions of the EMT's are substantially better in every way. Lyle

I had a 2008 Z06 with OEM run flats and drive from Florida to California and back and if felt like I was driving a top class Mercedes. Smoothest softest ride ever in 6th gear going 75 with the odometer at 1300 basically taking a nap. You'd never know you had run flats but definitely worth knowing you're safe if you had a puncture on some desolate Texas interstate where you sometimes don't see another car for 20 minutes or town for that matter.

Are you saying that a Kumho or Sumitomo tire will out perform a Michelin Super Sport
@lyleaulwurm94865 жыл бұрын
Absolutely not. Michelin Super Sports are expensive super-car tires. The Kuhmo and Sumitomo offerings are ideal replacements for run-flats because they are quiet and grippy at a bargain price point.
