I love em....especially living in a sandy substrate. Wherever they live, they benefit the entire ecosystem, constantly sifting through the sand, sending all kinds of debris into the water column for all the other nearby fish to come and help themselves. If I had the space Id have more than 2. They seem content with having eachother. Parameters are excellent. Also for the first time, I realize why all Corys quickly dart up to the surface for a gulp of air...instinctual gill flushing technique. In the past I always had them in gravel, so didnt know why they did that.

The term "Corydora" should be dropped from the hobby terminology. It has no scientific or any other merit. The name of the genus is Corydoras. It is singular, not plural. I'm sorry, but that is the case. We should also clarify the mistaken belief that Corydoras species don't possess scales. This is partially correct, in that they don't have hundreds of small scales like many other species do, but they are completely covered in armour composed of bony scutes. These scutes are visible as segmentations from the dorsal region, down to the longitudinal axis, and down to the ventral region. If you look closely, the edges of the scutes can be seen as oblique lines running from the dorsum to the ventrum. Some of these are often patterned with lines. The scutes afford Corydoras the same protection as scales do. I should add that the popular species C. paleatus comes from the southeastern coastline of Brazil, where the conditions are cooler than in the more northerly latitudes. That's why it prefers cooler temperatures than some of the other species that hail from the blackwaters of northern South America. Blackwater species such as C. napoensis and C. elegans are happy in pH values as low as 5.0, and temperatures up to 27°C. C. aeneus is a widespread species that is tolerant of a wide range of water parameters. Scleromystax species will even live at 18°C, but these are not beginners' fishes. One thing that you overlooked: corys prefer foraging over soft substrates that they can burrow their snouts into. So they should not be kept over large, hard or angular gravel. They will thank you for it. The dwarf species of corys, C. hastatus and pygmaeus, don't mind the substrate so much because they spend most of their time in the water column and amongst the plants.

I personally would struggle with dropping the scientific name every time which is why I think the hobbyists shortened the term, but they do deserve the respect.
