I'm surprised so few are talking about the stance switching. Which Colby for a moment in the post-fight conference admitted to confusing him a lot with his takedown offence (his only path to victory in reality). With Leons bigger frame, reach and way better distance management I think that completely negated Colbys rush in with an overhand and drop for the takedown approach. Then with his fast counters, Colby couldn't rush in without catching a hand so started backing up more naturally. Colby smiled at one of the early counters, so it hurt him for sure, and didn't want to engage with that anymore. With the leg chewed up he had no base to push forwards either.

I think Leon’s take downs of Colby outshined the switch stance. I don’t mean his takedowns were actually better than his switch stance . . .but for shock value with the fans, takedowns from a British fighter against an American wrestler is memorable

I agree with his take on American wrestling style in mma. Leon and others have gotten so much better at being able to work their way back onto their feet. The sambo style translates better to mma. They are able to keep people down and able to G&P/submit their opponent more effectively.

I think a key part of Leon's ability to standup is shown at 8:32 as well. Jack Slack mentioned it in his breakdown, but Leon slides his knee across Colby's belly and uses that to create distance and doesn't allow Colby to lay on him, as well. Overall his defensive grappling was super slick. He was active and constantly moving multiple places to push and not allow Colby to drop his weight and get control.

I find them pretty exciting for the most part, I’m a Leon fan so it’s easier for me to be entertained. The Colby fight was the least entertaining fight I’ve seen from him, though. They’re both at fault but you can’t really blame Leon, he did what he had to and only a little bit more. Colby was very tentative and kept the fight pretty closed for the most part.

True student of the game. I feel Corey and Leon have a similar mindset about a technical approach to fighting. But Corey has a vicious streak that Leon lacks and is prepared to risk positions to damage whereas Leon will always favour staying safe, which has occasionally gotten him in trouble towards the end of fights.
@DopeAtoms

8:31 this sequence is extra dope cos Leon actually rocks Coby to the right, uses that to get his left knee in and then as Colby tries to counter balance that rock Leon lets his weight roll the other direction and escapes under the armpit

Cory, can you explain the evolution of the current MMA scene compared to say 15-10 years ago, and how training has evolved into say coming from wrestling base, or karate base, or whatever, and how coaches basis on what you need to work on to round off your game, because today's fighters are so well rounded now. I see MMA gyms all over now, where years ago you had to go from boxing gyms to BJJ gyms, to Thailand to get the most out of the most important arts and methods used in MMA

The American wrestlers ability to hold opponents down is actually what has always set them apart from freestyle wrestlers, where the emphasis is so much more on explosion than control. Even American folkstyle does seem to be moving away from control heavy games though, as point scoring focused styles from teams like Penn State are being emulated as opposed to the more traditional grinding control styles we used to see at midwestern schools.
@generalsubs1359
@generalsubs1359 8 ай бұрын
I think it’s interesting because yes, while American folkstyle wrestling has such dominance in top control, I think it’s more important to train the standup/explosive throw and takedowns from freestyle and judo- at least for an MMA base- I say this because it’s the level changing and ability to score from anywhere that negates most strikers offense and gives more options to a grappler. As far as top control goes, I think this is where Jiu Jitsu comes in handy- because there is more submissions to be applied and avoided, as well as the knowledge applied towards fighting someone who’s actively trying to get up or submit you from bottom instead of just avoiding a pin or extra points. I feel like a great example of this is pretty old school, but Ken Shamrock vs Royce Gracie 2. Brock Lesnar vs Frank Mir (the second one I believe but not sure) is another great example

It's interesting to me how a lot of freestyle guys are better at holding guys down, like Khamzat and Rinya Nakamura, despite the fact that American Folkstyle actually does ground work and Freestyle mostly doesn't aside from rolls, which don't have much carry over. Like Khamzat's use of leg riding would be useless in freestyle, yet he's so good at it.
