Cosmere Q&A | The Unmade

The Cosmere is a collection of Fantasy novels by Brandon Sanderson all set within the same universe. It’s filled with different magic systems, different cultures, and different characters. You’ll experience love, anger, hate, betrayal, and a whole host of other emotions as you read through the Cosmere. But one thing you may not have expected to feel when reading the Cosmere is Fear. The kind of Fear that chills your blood and covers your skin in a thin layer of sweat.
You see in the Stormlight Archive there are these supernatural forces that strike fear in the hearts of many. These forces are the Unmade. Incredibly powerful spren that can cause untold destruction and devastation. These Unmade are eldritch-level horrors and are reminiscent lovecraftian cosmic beings that the human mind can barely comprehend...

The Unmade are one of the most interesting aspects of Roshar in my opinion. Brandon is really stretching his writing abilities with these lovecraftian beings. Learning more about them, especially Ba-Ado-Mishram, is one of the things I look forward to most with each new book. Unfortunately we didn't learn too much in RoW, but I have a feeling we'll finally get some info on what exactly BAM did during the False Desolation during Stormlight 5.

I remember in Rhythm of War the Sibling said that Raboniel could corrupt her and turn her into an Unmade. It would be interesting to see if they could do the opposite with stuff like anti-voidlight and infusing them with either Stormlight or Lifelight.

I hope he does. Since she bonded herself to the Singer race and was able to give them Voidlight that could probably be changed to Stormlight, Lifelight, or even the Towerlight. Maybe she could even be bonded to create a new Bondsmith. That would be interesting to see what happens since she’s bonded to the Singers and what her restoration could entail. Maybe they could even restore the Thrill and others to what they were originally supposed to do.

I bet honor made 10 herald esque sprens with 9 being unmade by odium and 1 holding out, the stormfather. This parallels the heralds, and maybe by the stormfather bonding another causing that one dude to break after 2000+ years. You can see how brandon linked the treatment of dead eyes with our treatment of mental illness. I suppose the insanity of the heralds could be linked odiums unmaking their sprens(aka cognitive spirits)

Raven, I don't get notifications, for some reason, but I saw this as suggestion just now. I read Rhythm of War, Elantris and Warbreaker in the meantime, I'll be back once I'm done with Feralcatsneedlove, shortly, to watch this. I love the parallel/comparison to Lovecraftian entities! But I'd call the Unmade forces of the mind rather than nature. The death rattles, the Thrill, the Heart of the Revel, the Midnight Mother, the delineated darkness of Yelig-Nar (sorry, I don't know if he has a descriptive name, like those above), they all seem to me to be un-natural, monstrous, and thus very fitting for the human mind. Very nicely done! Chemoarish, the Dustmother, makes me suspicious, what few hints there are seem to fit so well to the Dustbringers - a term the Knights Radiant of that Order find insulting to a degree that caused great strife within the whole organisation of the Knights Radiant. It might be long forgotten, but does the insult really come from the similarity of Dustbringer to Voidbringer? Or was it once understood, at least in certain circles, that the similarity is with the Dustmother? The nature of the Order of Reducers - I'm not exactly sure if I have the correct term here - IS destructive, there can be no discussion about that. Of course it's possible some of the reducers learned something about the original voidbringers, humans, kept that secret throughout millennia, but hated any reminder of it, but, when reading, it doesn't quite click. But all that, of course, is part of what makes Sanderson so wonderful to read. I've read Rhythm of War, Elantris and Warbreaker only once each, within a few days, I had started a re-read of Mistborn, to see if my mind changed about it, but I couldn't resist the 3 bother books, when they arrived. My next will be Arcanum Unbounded. So it shouldn't be too long before I have something useful to say in my comments.

Do you think you’d every talk about Elder Scrolls lore, or most likely not? Elder Scrolls is probably my favorite fantasy universe because it’s so crazy, alien, and the metaphysics is pretty insane.

@@RavensRants ok cool. The Oathpact still just seems kind of nebulous. What were the reasons it was formed? What are the rules of it and how does it function exactly? Why did the heralds break it? Why were the heralds, once human, chosen in the first place and why were the honor blades created and given to them? Did they have physical form on Braize? Where were they actually on Braize when being tortured? How and by who? How many times did they go back (how many desolations)? Who formed the Oathpact, how, why, for what purpose? Etc. So many questions! Haha.

There was a video talking about the different Shards and as a joke one of them was listed as Mata Nui from Bionicle as the Shard of Destiny residing on Spherus Magna. I was wondering if you thought that Bionicle could fit in Sanderson’s Cosmere (I know this would never happen because Brandon owns the Cosmere, and Lego owns Bionicle), with its investiture being in the form of Energized Protodermis? There’s actually a crazy amount of lore. There are numerous islands, species (sapient and animal life). Something that’s interesting is that they aren’t actually robots (well most aren’t), they are biomechanoid constructs with both biological and mechanical components. Think of it like an inside out Terminator, or the Halo Prometheans but underneath their armor and in between the floating bits there’s organs and muscle tissue. I would link to the wiki and a site dedicated to compiling all Bionicle media that’s been released. But KZbin keeps deleting my comments. The best wiki is Biosector01 (alsoBIONICLEsector01), and the archive is BioMedia Project (this has all the comics, promotional videos, music, and various other things).

Lol I never got too into Bionicle lore as a kid, though I did have a figurine or two and played one of the PS2 games (also believe I watched a movie, but my memory on it is fuzzy). That said, I think there is definitely room in the Cosmere for more non-human races and outlandish concepts (like Bionicles). Whether Brandon Sanderson will ever venture into that territory remains to be seen.

You should do a video on the different Fused. Do you think that in the next book we will see a bunch of fused leave Odium like what happened at the end of Rythm of War. I hope Brandon does that, and it will even things out with some branches of the Radiants joining Odium. I’m sure that some would be horrified of the thought of killing Spren with anti-Stormlight or they don’t want to be ruled anymore.

I’ll have to watch that. The Heavenly Ones definitely had a set of ethics and switched sides once they saw that Singers could bond Spren again, and they don’t like the idea of killing innocents so they would likely switch sides as well as other Fused.

I don't like the current state of Nergaoul, in a sense that I believe that you have to master and control the evil you could do, because that would make you a stronger person and capable of doing good. In capturing and basically treating it as an outside force of evil, that onces isolated cannot effect people, Brandon says smth like: "you don't have to understand and control your own aspect of capability of evil deeds and feelings, bcs its not you really." Which I hugely hugely disagree with. I hope tho that it's not his final goal with that Unmade, if it does, that would bother me very much, since we are disagreeing in a fundamental level.

So most of my nonsense is below. Ha, I see you read everything I have in my book boxes, like the Kingkiller Chronicles. I can't wait for the time when you decide to tackle the Malazan Book of the Fallen. When I said only Coltain can stand beside Dalinar, I didn't consider that you, of course, don't know what I'm talking about, sorry about that. In truth, if Dalinar, Kaladin, Jasna, Navani etc. fascinate and inspire you, Malazan will hit you worse than an overgrown chasmfiend's weight, without arrow-like spren! I've read it 13 or 14 times now, not nearly often enough for true comprehensive knowledge, I wouldn't do anything like a video series any time soon (I don't do any at all, that's your job 😊), maybe a review for Amazon at the most. But I promise, it will be a feast like no other for you! Let me read a bit more, then I'll catch up on your videos. It appears to be a common problem not to receive notifications about uploads from subscribed channels or messages/comments from time to time, but just to be sure, have any of your other subs mentioned problems like this? Thank you for your work - and time and patience - it's hard on YT right now, the number of channels has exploded since the lockdowns and curfews started and many people have found other things to do, when it became clear this is not a short-time situation, but please hold on, your content really is very good!
