Really appreciate your breakdown of the research. So sad that those poor animals are forced to endure such pointless testing (aka torment and torture). But as you said, it's important to understand what type of testing/reseasrch was done and how that translates to the results.

I just found your channel and I absolutely love it! Such a perfect blend of all natural paired with science and research. So many "all natural" promoters don't realize that just because it's natural, doesn't mean it's good for you. Also, I had an allergic reaction to arrowroot powder during a diy test, so patch tests are important before smearing it all over the face! (like I did...) 😂

Thank you so much! You might be interested in these other posts I've written on the matter: www.humblebeeandme.com/lets-talk-natural/ and www.humblebeeandme.com/natural-efficacy-fallacy-natural-shaming/ :) Sorry to hear about the reaction! Patch testing is definitely best practice, though something I am (somewhat shamefully) often too lazy to do haha.

Yay! Love this video. I purchased your book in December and now have about $200 worth of ingredients in my shopping cart on tkb trading' website. I keep going back and making adjustments trying to decide what is most important to get first. This video is super helpful and I'm looking forward to more on this subject. Also, as a soap maker I have used zinc oxide as a whitener and it is too large of a micron size and adds a bit of scratching effect to the soap. If too much is used it will even affect the soap's hardness and cause it to dissolve unevenly or break (maybe more water is needed?). I quit using it and switched to white kaolin to whiten soap and even though it is not as white as titanium dioxide would be, it works for my purposes. Thanks!
@HumblebeeAndMe
@HumblebeeAndMe 7 жыл бұрын
Ah, interesting feedback on the soap! I have only ever used ZO sparingly in soap as I started using TD and have mostly just kept to that. It's good to hear from someone who has experimented more than I have!

I'm glad I came across this particular post. You're absolutely correct about Titanium Oxide. My background is in Chemistry and since my college years I was puzzled as to how research took place. I landed in the field of research for the simple reason of being frustrated as to how studies went about. Your point on Titanium brings back my research on Saccharin, studies done on lab rats were exposed to this substance in numbers, humans would never consume in a lifetime which brought cancerous results, well duh, of course it would. I wonder how many people know that to much broccoli could cause cancer, of course, you'd have to consume 21 large heads of broccoli in one sitting, 14 times within a one week span, can you imagine this being done then stating broccoli causes cancer. The U.S. needs an overhaul in research ethics. Anyway, I became a patron here some time ago, never took the time to sit with you (sorry for that, life is busy) you're work ethic is stunningly professional, hats off to you Marie!!

Thank you! This is insanely helpful. I have a question about the titanium dioxide. TKB has Methicone Titanium Dioxide, Dimethicone Titanium Dioxide, Titanium Dioxide - Rutile, and Titanium Dioxide Oil. I was going to order a sample because it seemed like a lot of eyeshadows had titanium dioxide, but then I saw how many there were and I'm super confused and didn't buy any. It sounds like one of these you could add to a matte green and end up with a brighter green?

Hi Marie! I'm new here and loving your content - so much that I got your ebook a few days ago and have just dove in enjoying it so much! I do have a question though - I'm reading that titanium dioxide is known to accelerate skin aging by producing free radicals - do you know whether this is true for non-nano titanium dioxide as well?
@HumblebeeAndMe
@HumblebeeAndMe 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Anette! When I hear a claim like that, one of the first things I want to know is if the claim is backed up by actual, relevant studies, or if it's a theoretical thing that could happen under certain specific circumstances (that may or may not be relevant to actual use of the ingredient). For instance, you might've read that you should never ever touch bentonite clay with metal due to ion exchange. I asked an expert, and he explained that this is unlikely to happen in a meaningful or damaging way in the way that people use bentonite clay for skincare (www.humblebeeandme.com/bentonite-clay-and-diy-beauty/). I found this article interesting: www.sterlingminerals.com/does-titanium-dioxide-cause-free-radical-damage-to-skin/.

would you be able to add sericite mica to a body butter to kind of take out some of the oiliness and defuse the light on your skin?
@HumblebeeAndMe
@HumblebeeAndMe 6 жыл бұрын
In theory, yes, but I'm not sure if you'd notice the impact on your body (as opposed to faces, which have more pores than the rest of our body). You might prefer to add a starch, which will reduce the oiliness and is less expensive :)

Hi Marie .. I am currently using your recipe in your book for the mattifying powder but I still need a little more martifying due to super oily skin .. is it ok to use a little silica microsoheres into the formula for added oil absorption if so how much should I add for the recipe size you provide for in your book .. Also is maybe your airbrush powder a better base to use the silica microspheres as a finishing powder ..Thank you so much I am enjoying your book so much 😍
@HumblebeeAndMe
@HumblebeeAndMe 6 жыл бұрын
For the finishing powder I'd probably start by using silica instead of the calcium carbonate; just remember that you cannot put the microspheres through the blender or they'll lose their lovely feeling due to not being spheres anymore-mash everything together in a baggie instead! You can always add more as needed :) For the airbrushing powder I'd replace 1/4 of the sericite mica with the spheres and go from there :)

Great Video! but i have a question, when you said titanium dioxide is actually do better than zinc oxide, i was wondering how about the protection and Anti-inflammatory function? I have made once nappy cream with zinc oxide for my baby girl back 3 years ago and it worked so well. I always though TD only for physical sun block and yes cosmetic lol (sorry im not that familiar with TD) Also, there are lots of cream, especially nappy cream, the main active ingredient is zinc oxide, i have seen one up to 10% (medical treated of cuz). May I know what's your opinion on this?
@HumblebeeAndMe

TD is more useful than ZO in makeup; if you're making a diaper cream you need to use ZO :) You can learn more in the Humblebee & Me DIY Encyclopedia (www.humblebeeandme.com/diy-encyclopedia/)!

Hey! For full answers to your questions and lots of formulas I'd really recommend checking out my book 😊 It’s called Make it Up: The Essential Guide to DIY Makeup and Skin Care and it’s all about how to create your own makeup at home. I’ve compiled a big list of places to buy it here: www.humblebeeandme.com/make-it-up-preorder/. I’m very proud of it, and if you’re interested in making your own colourful cosmetics it is definitely a great place to start! You can also check out the Humblebee & Me DIY Encyclopedia (www.humblebeeandme.com/diy-encyclopedia/) to learn more about these ingredients, why they're used, what they do, how to use them, etc :)

Thank you Marie. I am not interested in making diy makeup, but in skin care products yes I do. So, the short answer should be that those powders are especificaly for makeup products?.

Hello... am new to your channel. When making homemade soap, which will you recommend that's better between titanium dioxide and zinc oxide? When trying to brighten and also heal the skin which helps the skin against sun and treat other skin problems?
@HumblebeeAndMe

TO will be the better colouring option; I wouldn't expect the presence of either in a product that will be on the skin for mere moments to treat much of anything :)

I've read that zinc oxide has sun screening properties. I use a uva/uvb sun lotion under makeup anyway but bottles usually say you have to reapply after a couple of hours. When I'm at work, this isn't doable so what about doing the lotion and then dusting my face with zinc oxide a few times throughout the day. Would that work?

Jennifer Judd She said in another video that she won't make sunscreens because you can't ever know the true strength of a homemade one. Read the back of the store bought sunscreen, you need far more than you think and need to reapply far more often as well.

So, if I were to make foundation using kaolin clay as the base, do you think that would work reasonably well, or do I HAVE to have titanium dioxide? What kind of results do you think I would get?
@HumblebeeAndMe
@HumblebeeAndMe 7 жыл бұрын
I think you'd get a low coverage powder with poor adhesion, and judging by your profile photo, you'd have a hard time matching your complexion as you're quite fair. You are obviously welcome to try, though, and if you do I'd love to hear about your results!

Haha the lighting in that photo made me look really white. I have olive-toned skin and get super tan during the summer. That's what I was thinking: low coverage...I'd love to get some titanium dioxide, just gotta plan for it. (Now my mind is stuck on what you said...is it harder to match fair skin tones? Why? What do you use to pigment your foundations?) Also, would making it a cream foundation give it more adhesion?

Animal testing is not very accurate due to the fact that humans have a different genetic make up to rats and mice and rabbits what may be harmful to certain animals species isn’t necessarily harmful to human. Every human has a different reaction to certain ingredients not every human will react the same to certain ingredients so everyone should really do a patch test when it comes to different formulations and products. I'd probably start with getting an advanced degree in chemistry so you can safely synthesize pure versions of the minerals, but you'd probably need to get into mining for the mica. Personally, I just buy them!
