I'm not a professional artist but I use makeup brushes quite a bit because I was in makeup before and when I started drawing i found makeup and painting very similar. Daiso's makeup brushes are cheap and surprisingly good quality now. Here's what I use: ** Powder brush, blush brush and shading brush : Like your big fluffy brush, in descending size order. I use these to 1. take eraser dust off, 2. mop brush for blending large acrylic or oil areas (in that case must be washed immediately), 3. soaking water off watercolor mistakes (large) ** nose shading brush, bullet brush, bullet point brush - blending small areas in oil or acrylic or picking up small watercolor mistakes. I don't use an actual makeup blending brush because they are too sparse and soft. Makeup blending brushes will be good for blending pan pastels though. ** nail art brushes - great liner and very fine point brushes. A whole set costs under $10 US and is of similar quality to good quality artist liners. WN 0000 liner brush isn't any more durable than nail art brushes so I buy the nail brushes and throw them away regularly. ** sponge tip brush : blends charcoal and graphite like a dream. Also can be used for solvent application to colored pencils ** eyeshadow brushes : not much of a practical use in art so i don't use these. I did try them to blend charcoal and it made a really soft blend. ** Nail cleaner brush (or the eyebrow brush in your video) : I use it to clean my painting brushes after acrylic or oil. ** foundation sponge : use to absorb excess water in watercolor after dipping brush in cleaning water, absorb paint mistake or pick up areas of paint, or float on water to wet acrylic brushes adequately between applications. Recently for the watercolor part I also like to use magic block sponges. For traveling I put one or two cushion puffs (flat sponges) in a mint tin for the same use. in that case I recommend fibercell puffs, like those made by banilaco, mamonde, or laneige. Pony makes really good puffs and sponges that can be used for art use but are expensive ** face washing glove or cloth : I put this on the bottom of my water jar and it cleans brushes faster and better. So cheap and all the paint gathers in that so after about 10 acrylic paintings I just throw it away and buy a new one. usually one glove will yield 2-4uses depending on the size of your water jar.

I am a former make up artist for many years. I have always tried make up brushes along with my regular brushes and discovered so many new effects that I wouldn't have had if I stuck only to my art brushes. In the UK you can buy a makeup brush set of about 7 brushes for £1 for the lot from the pound shop. These are great for painting watercolour postcards! .There are round brushes in the sets I bought as well as flat brushes. At this price, its also easy to cut bristles to make chisel brushes. I use the mascara brush to paint pine trees (as one would use a fan brush). I also use it to wash out streaks on dried paint and by rotating the brush, I can get perspective in ploughed ridges disappearing into the distance. The plastic side makes great scrafito marks and works quite well as a rough alternative to sharpened reverse end brushes for creating thin lines - an alternative to a rigger. On miniature paintings on postcards and smaller, these are great. I have visited brush manufacturers exhibiting at art and cosmetic events (the same manufacturers create identical products for both in some cases). I find it helpful to reduce the length of cheap wash brushes - especially those costing a little more than £1 - they can then fit into sketchers boxes. I also use an eyelash glue bottle washed and cleaned out to hold a small amount of masking fluid. It comes with a flexible plastic wand - ideal for applying to small paintings to preserve white paper. A 1.5 cm x 0.5 cm x 0.5 cm piece of kneeded rubber goes next to it then a shaved down pencil. In an old Daler Rowney sketchers box with two brush holder spaces, I can use a short brush and these other essential tools. A £1 makeup kit a postcard block and my favourite professional paints replacing Daler Rowney paints, a waterbottle, and I'm good to go!

This was very interesting! fyi - some cosmetic brushes have longer handles and there are loads of different brushes with all kinds of lengths of bristles depending on its use. What you were using would be considered travel cosmetic brushes which is why the handles are short. If you can find the right brush for you at the right price that's all that matters. Thanks so much for the demo.

those make up brushes are designed to be used with powders and other dry products, and that's why they are so soft. amazing that they held so much water. if you are on a budget you could sure make them work!
@sdovas7 жыл бұрын
Of course, make up brushes are design for an entirely different medium so they will act differently as you so accurately describe. My wife as a lot of make up brushes and when she is ready get rid of them I will often grab them and use them the way you do here, and one thing that you'll find especially with that larger brush, is that as they age you will see that you're leaving a lot of bristles in your washes as the brush goes by. Of course since these brushes are so much cheaper it's a lot less painful to just throw them away when they start shedding hair in your painting, but it is something to be aware of and to watch out for.

I have two I use regularly - A big synthetic oval mop with stubby handle (bit like synthetic squirrel) - I use it as a handy dusting brush to remove eraser debris, and a very short and narrow filbert brush (only about 3mm long) - I appropriated from my Ex - it appears to be a soft natural hair and works brilliantly for lifting fine detail in watercolour and softening or blending out hard edges. It also works great as a blending tool with graphite pencil and especially using solvent blending mediums with colour pencil.

As someone who used small watercolour mop brush blending eyeshadow/blush. I think the big difference for the brushes are because the makeup consistency are much thicker and powder-ish, so the light texture paint are much difficult to control when using those. Btw I have to say the low-end makeup brushes are cheaper in comparison of the same entry level watercolour brushes, but the natural hair watercolour brushes are waaay cheaper than the makeup brush which costs over 100 dollars easily.

I think this would be such a challenge! I haven't seen any other artists attempt this and I think your skills really show through more when you can make impressive art with minimal supplies

The small brush one is a liner for either the lips or eyes. You can get longer liners as I seen in some places for nails which probably be more like a rigger. As well as you can get bent liners similar to detailed brushes which can probably get super fine details. The nail ones probably would hold more water and paint since they are usually used for nail art. I do not use makeup all that much, but get way to many ads for make-up from KZbin that makes me wonder if they think all women users want make-up ads. That and the only place that sells good hair care products for thick, curly hair is Ultra which if full of make-up, beauty supplies, and even an instore saloon. I really dont see much use for make-up since my skin is really sensative to it and just causes me problems and I hate the feeling of it on my face. Agh... Just thinking about it makes my skin crawl. However... Ku ku. Guess I will be going to the cheap stores and try out cosmetic brushes for my outdoor gouche and watercolor. I actually like the effects you got in this painting and can see how some of the negatives of the cosmatics brushes you mentioned could be really useful effects for getting enviroment and plant studies. That and it will be easy to replace them if something happen to them and save my good brushes for times I want more refined pieces.

My experience is most inexpensive makeup brushes shed their hair if used with water. More expensive makeup brushes are very good with acrylic and gouache paints, thicker paints. Just like art brushes makeup brushes can be very expensive. This was a fun video and I believe it is worth the try. I also believe I read somewhere that some brush manufacture makes brushes both for artistic use and makeup use, so the difference between the two is the same consider the quality and control.

I have heard the biggest problem with cosmetic brushes is that they were not intended to be placed in water frequently. Therefore, the bristles fall out. Sure a foundation brush was intended for use with a wet foundation however watercolor brushes are constructed to be able to tolerate being dunked in water (for painting) and washed frequently in water (for cleaning). Thank you.

Very clear difference, BUT I do think that as long as we don't have big areas to fill out the cosmetic brushes fulfill their purpose as watercolor brushes quite nicely. And the comparison was a bit unfair because the cosmetic brushes are not a real equivalent of the presented watercolor brushes. If you know your way around cosmetics then you'd be able to find more similar brushes, so I still believe in them. Also they are just sooo much cheaper.

I was always told if a brush deposits different amounts of paint with different preause it's not a good brush. if the brush deposits paint consistently throughout all brush pressure it's a better brush...is that right?

I use cosmetic brushes sometimes too...some of them are better than some cheap water color brushes.i think they might be more suited for acrylic painting...

I wonder how they'll handle gouache 🤔

1:55 - the cosmetic brush is an eyeliner or pencil brush!

Great experiment, I have done it 😂 mostly with the very thin ones. But I would stick to the regular brushes.

The small brushes aren't very good. The big brush is great. ( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°)

A rigger is not the same as your small cosmetic brush. You should compare the small cosmetic brush to a # 1, 2, 3 or 4 watercolor brush. The comparison would be similar, the brush length would be the same.

HA ... great review... !!! I have used expensive watercolor brushes to do my make up for .. ( should I say how long ... LOL ) over 30 years .. I found them to be far superior to the brushes available for cosmetics... But that was a long time ago.. maybe things have changes since I tested the theory .. : D

How about using those sable brushes marketed toward nail artists? I'm curious since it's the only sable brush that is widely available (and relatively) affordable in our country.

That was fun. It's good to know that if I can't find my brushes I can use my wife's make-up kit. ;-) (Perhaps the comb could be used to clean clogged brushes?)
