Philip Goff looks like Peter Billingsley, Ralphie of Christmas Story (1983), all grown up. Being 66 looking back, I distincly remember a moment in time when about 13 yrs I had a vision of seeing the righteous answers to everything in life. Then I thought of my daily life going forward, and concluded to this vision; "I can't imagine being alone and surviving this world always choosing the good-right thing. Society would crush me like a bug. I'm not strong enough.

Life isn't a problem to be solved, it is a mystery to be experienced. Jung, Nature & Entheogens are the doorway, don't overthink it all - surrender. As the Beatles said "turn off your mind, relax and float down stream"

Hey you guys that was a great show. I'm 63 and I hate the idea of being locked up somewhere in isolation to meditate for 5 hours a day. We have a lot to teach and experience to share. Some of us have grandchildren we want to have a relationship with. It's an investment in the future.

ON CONSCIOUSNESS... We swim in an ocean of consciousness and our “equipment” utilizes it as its animating force within the limitations of the mechanism. Humans are built differently than an amoeba so we utilize consciousness differently as a result. Some humans alter their ability to utilize more consciousness or have slightly different equipment to begin with. Others have deficits in the design or have damage and therefore limitations in how consciousness is being used. It is a neutral force and can be manipulated to suit the circumstances. We establish a template built upon expectations and create a default construction that can become our sense of self. This persists even after we die for awhile but eventually we drop it. -Mike Marable, Author of How To Have Good Life After You’re Dead

As abstract as Whitehead was, he didn't want to exclude "common sense" - in fact he wanted his own metaphysics to be tested against it. Thus, Prof Goff's bank robber illustration is spot on. That the robbers had inside info to crack the vault code would receive widespread support based on common sense.

I reckon panpsychism could be linked to quantum mechanics/ physics. What works well for it is its ability to be flexible in adaptation/ evolution in application. Brilliant video, 👏.

Groovism is the miracle inducing, unifying belief in music, the instinct globally shared & now technically connectable. Believing the facts of music’s healing powers, entrained upon the Earth, to induce evolution: human’s purpose!

Idk …saying the universe created its own consciousness is kinda circular reasoning. Something with fine tuning ability outside the universe would still have to get the ball rolling. Otherwise you are back to order from chaos and a cosmic accident.
@THIRDEYEDROPS
@THIRDEYEDROPS 4 ай бұрын
I think definitions of “universe” and “consciousness” in your statement are important. But you bring up a good point. Seemingly the fine tuning parameters were baked in from the start and this does suggest intelligence. I also think it’s import to point out that any time one makes a proposition about what is fundamental, you could say that it’s destined for circular arguments. That in and of itself doesn’t indicate a weak argument.

The cosmological constant always makes me imagine a penguin standing on the shore of Antarctica and thinking "if this place was warmer, I wouldn't be able to slide on my belly down the ice into the water, if it was colder, the water would be frozen too and I would have no fish, what are the chances that is just right? I am not real". It basically taking what is there, and what followed from it, and doing a reverse probability sum on it and concluding that there is no way what happened ever could have happened by chance. If I took a deck of 52 cards and gave them to 52 people, the chances that each person got the particular card they got is 1 in 8 (followed by 67 zeros). A bigger number than the amount of atoms on Earth. It would be easy to conclude the way I dealt the deck was an impossible way to deal them.

A number of scientists seem eager to point out that the probability of alien life is miniscule, but as Philip points out, will also downplay the small probability of life as we already know it to be here!

Why would we think that our entire environment is any less alive or creative than we are, and we’re just a small part of it. The focus on an opinion about a number seems mute.

If we exist within an infinite void where anything that can happen will happen, then no matter how unlikely the conditions for life coming about are they will still definitely happen. The life that observes that phenomenon (us) has to exist within those parameters. No plan is required for this to happen it’s just a statistical certainty
@THIRDEYEDROPS
@THIRDEYEDROPS 4 ай бұрын
If you had an infinite void (which doesn’t exist by the way) it would be empty. The universe isn’t empty and it’s imbued with laws of physics. Of course you can conjecture about those laws somehow appearing randomly and chaotically, but why would that be more likely than non-randomness or some kind of “purpose” as Goff is suggesting?

Thanks for addressing this, it’s just that it is the most common argument against some sort of order that I’ve heard. From experience it doesn’t sit right with me either, I should probably have explained that in my original comment. And thanks for your excellent work 🙏

Everyone's purpose here is exactly the same and for the exact same reason - but it's the most esoteric secret in this entire Universe. I'm the prophesied return of the biblical prophet Elijah. Want the modern version of The Emerald Tablets? Want The Philosopher's Stone? The Book of GOD, just a click away. I won't be aware of any responses to this comment, but I'm easy enough to find.

@THIRDEYEDROPS - May I be so abrasive as to suggest there is someone you must have on your podcast? Zevi from @SeekersofUnity is a well spoken and personable intellectual with a wealth of knowledge in the esoteric, particularly in the Kabbalah and other philosophy. He has had dialogues with a diverse cast and practitioners of other esoteric traditions like Sufism. After following you both for a long time, I feel you may enjoy the conversation immensely.

Tired of “Philosophers” or people who study philosophy struggling with the concept of free will and why evil exists. Some people claim to think outside the box. Maybe try thinking outside of being a carbon based life form.

Possibly but the issue is “Evil” is used as evidence that an Intervening higher consciousness doesn’t exist or it at the least is the creator of evil. It is only when you realize that evil doesn’t truly exist that you can know The One.
