Thank you for adding Darkwood into this video, I truly believe it's very lovecraftian. One could say it's very similar in plot to "The color out of space". Still it's mechanics makes you be careful about the woods and what lurks in there. Great video c:

It’s very similar to that story, and executes it very well.

I always thought the Unnamable was Lovecraft taking the piss out of his own work again. Think of it: Two people are chilling on a hill and are talking about how it's weird that horror stories call things unknowable and how that's a cop-out. They're then immediately run over by something unknowable and come to the realization in the hospital. It almost feels like Lovecraft wrote "Once upon a time, my bullies didn't like my stories. Then they were run over by a shoggoth. The end." in a much more eloquent way.

I first got this vibe when I was a kid, playing Half-life Redemption mod ( officially released as 'Absolute Redemption' afterward)

Bloodborne introduced me to cosmic horror and I haven't been able to find a game that does it so well, even though I've played many horror games. I've found that the ones that don't try to replicate H.P.L.s stories are the ones that actually do it better, like Amnesia, Soma, Darkwood and Silent Hill.

Can't believe I skipped this video for later, because of the thumbnail. Now watched it after the new one about cosmic horror

Games I think do cosmic horror really well are XCOM Enemy Within, Darkwood and Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Nice vid and will be waiting for part 2.

Amnesia is definitely getting a mention in the next video.

Enemy within does, weirdly enough, have some cosmic horror elements. Never thought about it like that.

@@CT-316 I was debating mentioning it but I'm playing through it right now and it absolutely does have some awesome cosmic horror.

No bloodborne??

@@sergeantrl-3357 There's so many games with cosmic horror that it'd be impossible to list them all here but Bloodborne's awesome too.

What do you think is worse when it comes to horror? Fearing what you don't know or fearing what you don't understand? Why? Do you have examples?
@HorrorReview3 ай бұрын
I think maybe fearing what you don’t understand, in game terms there’s the re4 regenerators, unless you already know their deal, shooting them like every other enemy gets you nowhere, drains resources and they just keep coming. There’s lots of things you don’t know in games and films but the nature of them I think is what makes them frightening.

Cosmic horror is insanely interesting. I find the horror of the unknown drol if the depths of the ocean more than thay if space. We know very little about the brain, deep, deep ocean, and space. So many games and films do it well, but too much visual representation can easily take away the fear.
