A Jungian look at the cosmic horror of H.P. Lovecraft and his Cthulu mythos. How archetypes and elder gods are one and the same, and humanity desperately seeks to domesticate these ideas. Also Synchronicity, messages from God, and the joy of the Subgenius!

Lovecraft’s mythology is the inverse of Greek Mythology, instead of there being a family of very human forces that elevate human desires, Lovecraft’s gods are the monstrous and alien aspects of the cosmos that devour all but our most chaotic impulses.

@@lorddevilfish5868 I like this, although some believe that the Greeks represented the Lovecraftian Chthonic gods in their Titans, and that this is what the mystery cults were actually about... the worship and interaction with older gods who the embodied higher human forces have repressed by burying beneath the earth or sealing away in caves. Beings who cannot be spoken about or depicted openly.

@@richardtseng9535 That’s interesting, I’d say that Gaia is arguably one of the most Eldritch deities, she’s the source of all monsters and operates on morality not inherently good nor evil, she fights for her children no matter how horrific.

All I can think about is the game Persona 2 where the main antagonist is Nyalathotep who in game represents humanity's collective Shadow, while Philemon is the representation of humanity's Persona. Both figures originate from the unconscious, Philemon came to Jung in a dream while Nyalathotep came to Lovecraft in a nightmare

Viewing synchronicity-chasing in the negative is a very interesting view- John Keel spent his whole life chasing the "Other", all the fortean strangeness and he never truly found himself anywhere- a trickster jerking our strings. I believe the trickster is also the threshold guardian, and if you cannot endure/elude it, it will forever bar your passage. If you follow synchronicities, instead of imbibing their message, they'll keep assailing you- when you get the message, you put down the phone, you shouldn't stay chained to the phone thereafter, because the other line will not hang up on its own accord All hail "BOB"!

Synchronicities with this video : 1-These days I kept getting a video in my recommended explaining why Cosmic Horror is hard to depict in movies, and you upload a video called Cosmic Horror. 2- I watched a video that was called something like "The most dangerous rabbithole on the net", it played a video that was linked with mind control and it was all about Bob, it also said "Next time you hear Bob , you will -" and I closed the vid because it was disturbing af lol. Now that I am writing this, synchronicities remind me of something that used to happen a lot when I was a kid, I would watch cartoons and movies over and over, the same classics... Then, I would learn a new world at school, and I would start hearing it EVERYWHERE, sometimes it freaked me out because I never noticed they ever said such words... Anyways, I am getting the same vibes from synchronicities.

This makes me think about the concept of selfish genes and a gene-perspective on evolution. Basically the actors of evolution are not individual phenotypes, but rather the genes that the phenotypes have. The genes control behavior, stand for a lot of the personality and explains altruistic and self-sacrificing actions that essentially kills the phenotype while facilitating the further spreading of said gene. A bold, but coherent, statement would be to claim that archetypes are both originating from and facilitating the spread of said genes. Archetypes are basically a mental interpretation of the cosmic reality that evolution has as its playing field. It doesn't live in our senses, but rather in the headspace that is the mind of every human, so vastly fundamental that you cannot differentiate the archetype from the human - hell maybe even from primates alltogether. Archetypes are by definition the foundational pillars of our mental headspace. It's the legs of the table that is your mental work desk.

And if the fourth dimension is time, where time doesn't exist in the dream-state, where are you, and who or what are you communicating with. What I really like about HP Lovecraft, was the guy was heavy into science literature, to the point I couldn't believe he mentioned concepts I thought were far beyond his time

Outside of Jung, Lovecraft is the individual I’ve studied most. This synchronous crossing of my intellectual and aesthetic icons is most delicious! I like the idea of Cthulhu being a manifestation of the unconscious and all the impersonal dread associated with the dark recesses of our repressed collective energies, but I do take issue with the linguistic deconstruction of Cthulhu as I think it domesticates and defangs Lovecraft’s genius. Overall great video! And I’d love to chat more with you about the synchronous connections between Jungian thought and some of the more fringe elements of the Cthulhu Mythos

I think conceptualizing cosmic horror as ridiculously powerful forces that ‘toys with us for their own amusement’ misses the point of cosmic horror. You said it yourself in the beginning that they are ‘indifferent and impersonal’ and yet you follow that up with ‘therefore they are puppeteers of our fates controlling us as they want’ implying malice from their part. The scary thing about lovecraft’s horror is precisely that indifference toward human life; sure these elder gods arent loving creatures trying to guide us into a better life, but they also dont care enough about us to resent us. Thats what lovecraft’s trying to convey, the absolute insignificance of human life instead of humans being playthings of these evil, malicious gods. A lot of times in Lovecraft’s stories, the elder god doesnt even realize that they are torturing/killing humans. Azathoth, who is the eldest god in Lovecraft’s mythos, isn’t even conscious; he’s asleep. The elder gods arent evil, and conceptualizing them as such is no different than those who domesticate gods as loving and human-centric.

Interesting. Your videos are very interesting. I like to think that the evolutional forces are like objects we gravitate towards. The mental distress happens when we're being pulled to too many directions at once. The synchronities are like a possibility to act upon, which will alter the pulling forces. From my personal experiences following the synchronities balances the uneven pulling forces. Not following them makes me feel like a slave.
