Are the universe and its physical laws so fine-tuned that the rise of life is inevitable? Or is life a fluke, a lucky roll of cosmic dice? We look for the answer in the rise of two important components of life, dust and water. It turns out that the universe is laden with water, a byproduct of dust kicked out and spread around by supernovas and black holes.

First time I can leave a comment here. I finally made my first social media accnt lately, but I've been coming here for ages. Just wanted to Thank You Spacerip for all those excellent documentaries I always enjoy watching here. I know there's no definitive answer to that question, but the title was inviting. Max Tegmark, Seth Lloyd and a few other Cosmology oriented Scientists have some interesting viewpoints on this non practical but fun question.

Most of these videos are pretty good, but this one is really good. If, after seeing this, you're wondering why we haven't all been enslaved by sentient aliens, it probably means that (i) FTL is impossible, and (ii) sentient life at our level takes a similar amount of time to develop on other planets, and we are in the lead, or (iii) we aren't yet developed to any level where we are worth bothering.

Chances are life is fairly abundant throughout the universe, though 99.99999% of all species probably go extinct before reaching a level where they are colonizing other planets in large numbers, which makes the chances of meeting any of them extremely slim at best.

There are more options than the ones you listed. Here is another option: advanced civilizations have learned to travel faster than light and control their biology and environment to such a degree that their intelligence skyrocketed and their need for resources minimized. And considering the universe is so old, and considering the high likelihood that many other more advanced races have existed for a very long time, a kind of social order among various advanced races has been established, and that social order includes non-aggression against other sentient beings. Why? Because technology, science and the abundance of resources in the universe which can be used for most efficiently in utilization. ▪ www.singularityweblog.com/peter-diamandis-at-oce-discovery-technology-is-a-resource-liberating-force/ ▪ online.wsj.com/news/articles/SB10001424053111904106704576583203589408180

Magnesium So how much FTL exactly? It jacks up the probability of contact, but I'm suggesting that it is still not fast enough because we still seem locally alone, even if we are universally crowded.

There is really no gain for enslaving mankind, in my opinion extraterrestrial life has had the ability to reach us in the past, but never to enslave us. I can imagine watching mankind with advanced technology from space would be quite amusing, and we are only a threat to ourselves.
@Impatient_Ape

Magnesium Quantum entanglement is not a mechanism for sending information faster than light. Anyone who claims this is true doesn't actually understand it. So no, this article does NOT suggest that FTL is possible. The experiment attempts to measure the time delay between the results of a measurement at one location and the correlated outcome at another location. The whole idea of a "speed" here is all about getting eyballs on the article and it toally misrepresents the fact that absolute correlation that entanglement produces does not require the transmission of any signal from one location to another.

I could watch these videos over and over again. In fact, I do. This one is particularly striking for me, speaking on the potential prevalence of life throughout the universe. It's astounding how much water exists in some of the most desolate regions. I'm excited at the thought of intelligent beings on other planets contemplating our existence. What a feeling it is to essentially *know* that, based on current observations and calculations, there are other planets with life like us. Cities, technology, spacecraft. Why wouldn't there be *somewhere*?

I think it's purely chance. The universe may appear to be fine tuned, but then again before we understood evolution we appeared to be intelligently designed. Even if certain conditions of the universe have to be just so for us to exist that doesn't mean it's on purpose. Also, some of the conditions might need to be this way for *our kind* of life to exist. Sometimes you'll have two completely separately purchased objects that have nothing to do with one another and they happen to work wonderfully together. Does that mean it was part of some grand plan? No, it's a happy coincidence. We are the universe's way of pondering it's own existence.
@ICT_Midnight
@ICT_Midnight 9 жыл бұрын
RealityFacade Macro-evolution is far from being even considered scientific so your first point utterly fails. As for your “chance” nonsense, that also fails since the probability of the universe to get the constants right for life to exist is less than 1 in 10^300. Utterly impossible. The best explanation is that life and the universe is the product of a designer.
@jmitterii2
@jmitterii2 6 жыл бұрын
Based on all current observations and models, it appears you're likely right. It's pure chance. Which explains a lot of philosophical questions; why should their be suffering, why are natural phenomena often not conducive to our existence; most of the universe is empty space that kills macro life, etc. It's odds. And with such a big universe with arrangement as we are, such events become inevitable at a yet unknown probability distribution.

@@ICT_Midnight Only those pushing a religious ideology say macro evolution isn't scientific. Actual scientists disagree with you. Secondly your point about the odds is irrelevant. The odds only matter if you start with the assumption that life had to exist. If life is just a byproduct of the constants being the way they are then it makes total sense. Life exists because of the constants not in spite of them. Its logical. What's impossible is telling me something existed eternally outside the system of all known reality. Then using the most inefficient, wasteful convoluted method possible created the entire universe for the pleasure of one tiny species that have been around for only 1% of known time. Then made sure to endow his creation with all the traits, biological urges and character flaws that would piss said creator off forcing him to condemn and torture for eternity the vast majority of those he went through all the trouble of creating the universe for. That is what seems impossible.

the fact that we, the humans, are able to reason and think deeply as to where we are all and what things are surrounding us, can make a certain way to see our existence, but there are uncertainties that all of us are never going to decipher, such as, why are we all here and what is the purpose of everything that exists? this questions can be easily refuted by the religious or philosophical perspective, which can make a certain presumption. for my point of view, everything what the religion or philosophy states as true about the meaning of life, is just presumptions or just hypothetical issues, just that and nothing else. since the meaning of everything that exists and its purpose for the existence shall never be answered, there shall be only presumptions

Considering just how vast the universe is, I don't find it surprising at all that life has evolved here on earth. The conditions were favorable. And while life may be rare, I don't believe we are the ONLY life in the universe. It's a very big place. Surely there are other stars with planets in the habitable zone with the right conditions. People are always saying how all these conditions had to be absolutely perfect, but, really, I think it would be far more unlikely if life had NOT occurred, with the billions of galaxies, trillions of planets, and billions of years.

I always wonder, how scientists are so sure about the spectral readings they get from incredibly large distances. As in, talking about that 12B LY distant quasar and the amount of water in it. Can this result not be influenced by all the matter that is in between us and that quasar? What if there's load of water in between, that we see right through and get the spectral reading from and none in the actual quasar? Maybe this is stupid remark, because I don't have an excellent idea of how that may work, but it seems logical to me to assume that at such distances, there'll be LOADS of material in our line of sight, that can influence the results of spectrometer. Is there any specialist to give me an argument on this one? - apart from that, how can water molecules as such even exist in such violent neighbourgood as quasar is? I mean, it's as violent there as it gets in the universe, molecules should be split into ions as a result of the high energy radiation, or not?

Did he say 8.8 billion stars? I wonder where he got that number. Definitely a configurative theory. I am a Space Scientist and many Astronomers, Astrophysicist, and Planetologist such as myself calculate different hypothetical guesses of the Stars and the planets all the time. This is based off our equipment, computer simulations and mathematical modeling. But to be honest no person on earth actually knows how many stars are in the Milky way galaxy, Andromeda Galaxy,Triangulum Galaxy or other Galaxies in this Universe near us. I and my research colleagues say "A new Star is Born everyday,just like a baby!" So we can only speculate theorectical assumptions with the use of Science at this point. Unless an Alien comes forward with a calculating device that gives us an accurate and factual head count of stars,planets,and moons. Nevertheless this was a great informative and visual Doc!

Like, I'll see the bar load a few pixels, then it will discard that and try to load another resolution. By that point it's too late to manually choose a resolution, not gonna work. 6:57, a super-nova exploded 800 years ago, however; there are no traces of heavy elements according to the theory, that these elements are created after that gigantic explosion. Elements like gold, silver, led, etc...

Josh g Wrong, the probability of life to exist in the universe is less than 1 in 10^40,000. To put that number into perspective there have only been about 10^140 events since the big bang, there aren’t enough events to produce the outcome therefore your assertion fails.

@@ICT_Midnight You are mistaken. The probability of life existing in the Universe is exactly 1.0.

I think life and in our case intelligent life is an extreme chance game, which it's ultimate destiny is to seed the heavens with earth life.

Water isn't "one of life's most important components". It's on one the most important components of life as we know it. Life could be flourishing elsewhere in the universe without water.

Sorry. Physics and chemistry are universal. Consider, LIFE requires stored/encoded INFORMATION to succeed and reproduce. DNA. Among ALL the elements, ONLY carbon can chemically encode information; silicon is a vast, distant second. And to allow carbon to encode gigabytes of information in molecules requires liquid water. I'm sorry, chemistry and physics disallows lava life and solar ghosts and nonsense like that.

Gary Larson of The Far Side could animate this quite well. We would find that God's wife has sequin glasses, which help her point out all the household chores that go undone with all that creating going on.
