In those days, Image comics was doing a lot of character buliding at that time .They had beautiful art work, but was still working on buliding story lines as is witness here.

For sure, I don't think the series really takes off until somewhere between issues 25-50. Basically, once they stop trying to build their Image Universe. But it's fun for a bit.

God the Animated series was bad. Looking at the past issues it really embarrassing.

I think the first 20 or so issues are some of the worst for the comic and one of the reasons i usually tell people to start with the run up to 300 or the Satan Wars if they want to start reading Spawn.
