I believe he was an early Stoic. He is right about memories being the source of life after death, because the whole concept of a spirit or soul is in your head.All the folks that have now passed, if they meant something to me, live on in my head with fond memories. The soulless live on, too, as those who cause you harm have effectively taken a dump in your brain.

Think of the idea. You have roughly 80 years on earth. If you don’t get it right during that 80 years, having not a shred of evidence outside a book that reads horribly and brutally, the father that loves you will either burn you for all eternity or allow you to kiss his feet for all eternity. Who on earth would ever do that to one of their own children who they truly love? Nobody! It’s absurd on its face.

For the greatest part of human history we didn't even have 80 years but more like only 30-40 years. A 50 year old person in ancient Egypt, the Roman Empire, the Middle Ages, and well into the 19th century was a venerable senior citizen. Even today there are still parts of the world where average life expectancy is 60 at best. Which makes your argument all the more grave.

But that is actually the point. When you lived such a short and at times brutal life , no wonder eternal life seemed so enticing. With us living till we are 80 or 90, we've usually done it all and have no real desire to live forever. It's not a carrot religion can dangle in front of us anymore.

Pretty much exactly what scared me into being a Christian. Still a theist, but Christianity made me so incredibly cognitively dissonant and stressed that it fucked me up. Once I started to realize how crazy the god that Christians worship is, and how illogical it is that worshipping the wrong god is what’s gonna send people to hell, along with many other things, It started to make less and less sense. Like I’m born into a world that I have no choice to be born in where I’m already doomed to the worst fate imaginable. Great start. If god somehow fucked up that badly (although he supposedly can’t make mistakes), the way to get to heaven would definitely be far more reasonable and easier to tell. So my conclusion is this: either something created the universe and is far more just and good than the god Christianity depicts, or something created the universe and doesn’t really care what goes on in our world.

One of the most profound Catholic theologians of the 20th century, Henri de Lubac, wrote a book called "The Drama of Atheist Humanism". In the book, he did a very Thomist thing: in order to truly respond to the proponents of atheist materialism, he started by examining their thought in great depth. Otherwise he would only have been responding to his own preconceptions about atheistic materialists, and he knew this. Alex O'Connor seems to me a person professing atheism who extends that same courtesy to Christianity. He tries to understand it before responding to it.

Bear in mind that Christianity is one religion among many, and it would be impossible for any atheist to examine every religion's truth claims in detail. Simply knowing that science has refuted the existence of a historical Adam and Eve is enough to seriously undermine Christianity. No original sin, no need for vicarious atonement.

This man, Dawkins, has been at least equally indoctrinated (if that's how you want to think of it). His knowledge of the very thing he speaks against- the God of the Bible- is incredibly lacking. On Jesus, he asks, "Did He actually say that He was salvation?" And says, "Surely he never said that my death is necessary in order for you to be saved from sin." (!?) It's absurd, and often dishonest, to dismiss something without even examining it. This would be the intellectual equivalent of me dismissing the whole of scientific endeavor because of the medical use of leeches in the middle ages, without knowing anything about penicillin or the science of electricity. It's cartoonish. A simple google search would answer his questions in minutes, but he chooses to not know. This is more symptomatic of indoctrination than anything common to believers in the Bible.

This is interpreted by many Christians as an indication that Jesus saw his death as a necessary sacrifice for the forgiveness of sins.

Understand, original Christianity teaches full responsibility, BUT living a good moral life is insufficient towards attaining eternal life and happiness after death. Therefore one must be responsible within the framework of the cross of Christ. That is, you must pay for your sins and sacrifice the best you can, but after falling short, Jesus pays the rest in order to deliver your soul. So in Christianity it is not one-side - you must do your part and God does His part for your salvation. ☝🏽 So understand, it is an act of pride to rely on self and your own righteousness to get you somewhere. Alot of good people will end up in hell too. You need Jesus .

Because if Jesus is God then it takes away from his humanity and him overcoming temptations to sin through his own efforts. And it takes away from the holiness and omnipresent nature of God; especially, if one believes God can die. How I see it - besides God giving us free-will, the will-power, or inner powers within us to be righteous, the gospel message of Christianity of God sending His Son Jesus to die for us on the cross, is the only message whereby God does "something great" for the whole world to save the world from the evil one and the consequences of our bent sinful natures. It is consistent with God's nature of pure love that the manner of saving us would be through the greatest act of what love is - to arrange and approve the laying down of a righteous man's life for the lost world. No greater act of love than that. So, we do our part in overcoming sin, and God does His part in delivering us through Jesus His Son. And hence the motivation to do good and to be responsible, is because of this great act of love of laying down one's life for the other, accepted and approved of God. And you will never find this powerful motivation and encouragement in Judaism nor in Islam (a religion based on fearful consequences if you don't comply). This assurance of being a son or daughter of God once by faith you accept the sacrifice or atonement of Jesus, should make you happy, give you peace, and cause you to fulfill your responsibilities with the right Spirit and assurance of a resurrection unto eternal life. ☝🏽 This does not mean we can now use Jesus for a license to sin or quench our consciences. We can still lose our salvation even after accepting Jesus! What it means by accepting the gospel atonement by faith, we receive the gift of God's Spirit that "empowers us" now to fulfill our righteous responsibilities and be saved. For without receiving the atonement and the Spirit in us to guide us, we will fall short of reaching heaven. Being righteous without Jesus would get us no where. For God has made not only His Son to be an offering of His love, but has made His name higher than any other name, He has made Jesus the King of kings, and a powerful nemesis to defeat the evil one. He has also made Jesus an Advocate or High Priest to represent us who by faith accepted the gospel atonement and "demonstrate the faith" by fulfilling their righteous responsibilities and doing the ordinances of Christ like baptism and holy communion "to remember" him. For faith without works is a dead faith. It can't save. One must live righteous to show to God that the atonement of Christ matters. ☝🏽 As Biblical Unitarians we don't trust in Jesus, we trust in God's love who sent us Jesus and approved his sacrifice to pay for the hellish consequences of our sins and ultimately defeat the power of evil over us. So beware - to say we can defeat evil on our own when a universal message of God has been presented to us, is dangerous. If we reject the Son, the King Messiah who God the Father has appointed ... then most naturally, it is a statement - we reject God Himself who created him in the womb of Mary. We don't have that extra milege in our cars (so to speak) to take us to our eternal destination. 🙏🏽

I definitely agree with him on this. Sure you could say original sin is a metaphor for how no human is perfect and that we all fall short of our moral judgements, but what it's actually saying is humans are inherently evil and we are obligated to surrender our freedom to this supposed god. It just sounds like the perfect manipulative technique, selling someone the cure for an illness they don't have.

As a Christian and lover of science myself, I strongly believe in the principle of falsification. There are several scientific discoveries that would cause me to be an atheist (eg, if the universe was eternal, if the multiverse exists, if life on other planets exist). If I were taking to Dawkins, I would suggest that, if he had no way to falsify his unbelief, he hadn't thought about it hard enough. I suspect that would make him mad. But someone in his position should surely have an answer to the question, "What would falsify your unbelief?"

On the 'a newborn is born into sin' question that's around 4'30-4'50 (i.e. halfway): I've deliberately stood back and observed my own 'new newborn' who is now 4 years old; I've observed her own behaviours growth and development and that of those in her environment. What I've observed is that as a natural learning and adapting system that integrates with the environment within which she finds herself (e.g., trying behaviours seen of others that we then have to gently guide her away from): she's learning, and trying. Perhaps the 'born into sin' means 'born into an imperfect environment that contains undesirable mindsets and behaviours' and unless we all - collectively and communally - learn the required mindsets and behaviours to function as a peaceful and harmonized society, we're going to have problems; and if we _do_ know the desired mindsets and behaviours then we can better guide - through leading by example and also through gentle guidance as the new-life begins to explore-through-trying - the newlife.

Gandhi could have easily said the same thing if he lived back then having any inclination they were gonna kill him. “My death will inspire many to become more loving” that’s all those passages mean. It’s written in first century poetry. “Forgiveness of sins”. Yeah I mean they even write Jesus forgiving his enemies while being crucified in Luke. It’s quite clear that his martyrdom will be an example of unconditional love which is forgiving even the worst people. But the way it’s written in the gospel sounds more profound and deep than what I just wrote.

An interesting and respectful discussion. I think in religions (as in all human organisations) there is wheat and chaff. It seemed to me that you are identified a lot of chaff! I think it’s very helpful to point out some of the weaknesses in much religious thought. As a scientist, I’m very surprised that Richard seems to have such a strong faith in science. Surely all truth is contingent? The science taught in 1000 years may be very different from what we believe today. As a believer, I liked the video; seeking the truth through respectful debate, is very helpful, I think. And important in our divided world.

Mormons, though as much misguided as any religion, are one of the more (comparatively speaking) intelligent Christian groups. I recently purchased via Ebay a book on the ancient Persian religion of the Avesta (Zarathustra). This religion focuses less on its god (Ahura Mazda -Wise Lord) and more on behavior. Its main teaching is "good thoughts, good words, good deeds". It teaches that we are free to choose our actions but are responsible for all of them. This is far more an enlightening belief than the vulgar bestiality of the Bible. Harrison Cother (The Truth Hurts) is a Jehovah's Witness turned atheist. He made a beautiful comment. "It is better to have questions you can't answer than answers you can't question".

I have yet to be impressed with anything he has to say. My reference to Mormons being smarter has to do with their numerous universities -BYU -about the globe. So long as a belief; e.g. evolution or the non-Israelite origin of Amerindians, does not contradict with their ideas, they tend to have a fetish for learning. I attended Ricks College -now BYUI -in 83' -87' and was deeply impressed with them, though I was agnostic at the time. (no one knew this.) They also tend to support various school programs and -as I have experienced on both the giving and receiving ends -they have an EXCELLENT welfare program. They also run some medical facilities and teach at these as well.

There is something very genuine about Alex’s quest for Truth that is most admirable, no matter what your religious worldview happens to be. Dawkins does make the occasional concession, but he still seems more pessimistic and reluctant to truly understand the other person’s perspective

Do you actually know what is involved in studying Theology? Its not just sitting reading the Bible. In fact Christian thought was a very small part of my degree. The rest included Philosophy, Feminist Theology, Feminist Philosophy. I specialised in Buddhism. All of it was absolutely fascinating. My degree is also in English Literature which fitted perfectly with Theology as it is important to know theological and philosophical ideas when studying texts. Does Dawkins think studying English Literature a waste of time too?

Alex you are quite right to say that not all Christians believe that babies are born "into sin." Richard Dawkins is right that Jesus did not present himself as salvation from the Church's later more developed threats of hell as eternal conscious torment for the non-believer. Both these church doctrines, I would say, are read into the language of the Gospels and the New Testament. Like you Alex, I enjoyed studying for my theological degree. As you say, because of it I have an informed footing to understand and critique some of the ridiculous and "evil" ideas that have been propogated by Christianity, for instance. I think Richard is also right when he suggests that to a great extent the essay titles chosen by the faculty and the student go a long way to defining the real value of that degree. In the course of my degree, for instance, I learned that original sin, popularised by Calvinism in later years, is a doctrine whose roots are in the work Augustine of Hippo, a theologican who believed that our sinful nature was the unavoidable result of human conception being the consequence of an intense bodily pleasure. Because of our parents' pleasure in the bedroom you and I as babies were rightly condemned. This is far beyond what the New Testament writers intended with their references to the sinfulness of humanity, and I think most Christians would reject that view if they were squarely asked about it. I think it is an evil idea. It has been used to justify the most awful crimes against humanity throughout the ages. I don't think there is any good reason to defend it. I genuinely don't understand how parents can teach this kind of self-hate to their babies. Those are my thoughts. Thank you Alex for a very thoughful and valuable conversation. Keep it coming.

People often do see other people as objects, whether as playmates for monopoly, pawns in school drama or a way to satisfy your sexual desires, it is objectification of a living being whether we like it or not. People also are often vindictive, prone to bullying others, self-centered, arrogant. Sometimes you get so mad you want to kill someone, and to God’s eye, you already have just by feeling the urge to do so. You aren’t righteous because you control yourself, that just makes you good at following rules, which if removed would result in you breaking the former rules to achieve what you wanted. All of these sins describe myself at different times of the day, and I hate it. I am not a hypocrite, I am a sinner doing my best to not sin and failing horribly, but just the effort and belief in Christ has already made my life so much easier, giving me the strength I never had before to conquer any challenge that comes my way. In Hebrew, Jesus' name, Yeshua, literally means salvation or rescue. The focus of this salvation is rescue from slavery, that is bondage to captivity, oppression and death. I'm not sure if you've considered that sin (failure to love someone perfectly), transgression (to break a law) and iniquity (to act immorally or unfairly) is actually more focussed on how your actions affect other people and not so much focussed on the self?

We are not considered to have sinned before the age of reason (about seven depending on the individual). The fact remains that all come short of the glory of God, this is why it is available to ask God for forgiveness, which is available to the believer “It is by grace that you are saved, not of works lest any man should boast”. Don’t get religion get mixed up with scripture. Of course Jesus knew that he had to give up his life in order for people to have a way to beat sin and death. Every year of his life he witnessed the sacrifice of the Passover Lamb, which represented his future sacrifice. He also tried to speak to his father about letting “this cup pass from me, but your will, not mine, come to pass”. This demonstrates that he wasn’t crazy about the plan (he had read Psalm 23) but he remained firm in his wanting to obey his father, God. This also shows that Jesus was the son of God (stated 52 times in scripture) not God which is never claimed in the Bible.

Having read a couple books on psychology and parenting, I think the idea of saying "most Christians wouldn't consider a baby as responsible for sin" truly misunderstands just how many Christians spank their children before the age of 4 for exactly that reason. "Spare the rod, spoil the child" is an immediate extention of the logic that a baby is born in sin. Without sin, a baby is no more sinning by crying, stealing or hitting than it is sinning by it's failure to perform well on a calculus test. A baby sinning by our definition is actually a baby behaving in the exact developmental state it evolved into over generations. Without the ability to talk, it whines, criess, and takes in order to keep its mom close and accrew every resource it's able to while it's growing.

Sin exists within a moral framework, in general parlance one can sin with an offence, so an offence against whatever moral framework is in place could be construed as a sin and does not require a religious component. This said, while an atheist is clearly non theist, does not mean that he is not religious, believing in the Big Bang does qualify as a believing in supernatural powers, which does meet the dictionary definition of religious, so one could argue that an atheist moral framework is still religious and an offence to this framework could class as sin in a religious manner. I do share the view on "we are born in sin" that Alex presents, to me it means that we are born without such framework which has to be learned.

This concept of desire in an all-perfect, self-contained godhead has always puzzled me. On the one hand, you have God enjoying his blissful perfection, in need of nothing and, on the other hand, that same blissfully perfect God suddenly gets a creative urge, knowing that if he acts on that urge he will be opening Pandora's Box, a box filled with so much horror and suffering any sane entity would recoil at the thought. And yet, we are asked to believe this omniscient, all-loving godhead opens Pandora's Box anyway when nothing is compelling him to do so. When absolutely nothing is forcing him to abandon his state of bliss, in which there is no evil, no suffering, and no eternal torment, nothing compelling him to end that blissful state to create a nightmare. Is it possible for a godhead to become bored with his perfection? That question is easily overlooked in the stampede of drama that pours out of the bible from the very first chapter. Again, I ask, what could compel a blissfully perfect, loving god to disturb his eternal bliss to create a place of eternal torment for creatures who never needed to exist? I was thinking that something didn't sound right about Alex's argument when trying to convey the idea of sin from birth in secular terms - because the secular idea of infalliablity is completely different from the abusive 'you're worthless unless you believe, rever and pray to me' of Christianity. He made the opposite of a strawman argument while playing the devil's advocate which stumped the old Dawkins. Unfortunately it seems like his core audience is way too 'rational and intellectual' to be able to identify these basic mistakes Alex sometimes makes in his videos, be they atheist, agnostic or theist. You can often see a certain disdain from Alex's core audience when it comes to figures like Dawkins and other 'anti-theists' and I'm not trying to defend him as a better person or intellectual, I have no opinion on that but they certainly do. I think that if you are to play the devil's advocate you should atleast present the argument in an accurate way to what 'the devil' believes. What Alex conveys is a greater humanity and sensitivity than Dawkins does but let's face it, they both are critical of Christianity and religion. Alex is just a cool less emotional guy than Dawkins. Probably they both are most critical of religions that threaten hell to nonbelievers. I understand from going on religious sites that they give no respect and mock Agnostics. Part of this could be they feel they may find another step on the stairway to heaven by trying to convert as many nonbelievers as they can. Part could be that Jesus wants terrible things to happen to nonbelievers and he is the pathway for believers to adopt that sickening mindset. I have to fear the moderator or AI on here for just saying what I feel. You may not find it wrong. I wonder how anyone can not think it's wrong of Jesus. Good luck to you, and of course I have no idea how you feel about Agnostics or Atheists.

Do you really think Jesus wants terrible things for non-believers? You said so l must assume you mean it. But how can a loving God want that for his children. You wouldn't want it for your children so why do you think God would want non believers to go to hell. Not that it isn't true that non believers will go to hell but rather that God does not want that to be the case the choice is ours. So if anyone goes to hell it's not because God choose it for them. Isaiah 59:2 2 But your iniquities have separated between you and your God, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he will not hear. It doesn't make sense to think God wants non believers to go to hell unless you think God isn't loving in that case that is your opinion. The bible says Good is love why does your statement contradict this fact. If you as a parent had a kid and you happened to be a good judge and your kid was charged for murder wouldn't you find every means by which you could acquit your child from the prosecution without circumventing the law itself. Isn't that why they call God a merciful God? The cross is God's way of saving his people from the condemnation of the law but sin is the transgression of the law and the soul that sins must die. To make this shorter not that it's short. If Jesus didn't die we would all be condemned by the law to hell. I want to speak more about hell but l leave it for another time because l can see you have some contentions with Christians who preach hell fire without love or at least you perceive they do it from an unloving place. Why would God want sinners to go to hell I know you and l are not Israelites but there's no difference between Jews and Gentiles. I wish more conversation could be as civil, open and explorative as this conversation. I personally wasn't really convinced by Richard, although I can understand his misgivings about religion. He does seem to have a firm faith in science being able to "figure it out." Granted, it has come a very long way and we understand the natural world significantly better than we used to which has resulted in a generally higher quality of life for humans on this planet. I still raise the eye brow at his certainty on there being no God. Science is fundamentally an observatory practice and our universe is so big, I personally wouldn't be certain on what does or doesn't exist in our universe especially when we are practically blind to most of it. As such I find the certainty in God not existing just as silly an argument as the Bible being inerrant. I do appreciate that Alex is able to explore all these kinds of things and consider things that he may not personally agree with.

This "sin" is still somewhat better described with what we know about human bias, particularly the ones hard coded into how all brains works. (Facial recognition, and assigning personalities to faces.) See, viewing it as a bias to overcome, is noble betterment. We should strive to help others, rather than hurt. But sin implies that we are correcting misdeeds, that being biased in the first place is sin, regardless of if we act on it and hurt people or not. When in actuality, only choosing to STAY biased, which is then prejudice, is the harmful choice. (Among other forms of bias like willful ignorance, making excuses, TEACHING people to be sexist / racist, etc.) It's a pretty small difference, but it IS important to distinguish those who make honest mistakes, from those who relish in treating people unfairly. And the way religion uses sin, is designed to blur the lines on what is hurtful, and malicious. You can see this easily with LGBT+ allies: most people will be nice and understanding if you don't know the right ways to talk about sensitive topics. So long as you aren't trying to outlaw people. I wouldn't call a well meaning individual sinful or prejudiced, not for the mistakes they where taught to make. We blame those who teach the methods of hate. (Tbf, I do make mistakes too, so I might. But like, that's what I AM talking about here. You know?) There are a lot of differences and similarities between what is natural ignorance, and TAUGHT misconceptions that make it hard to talk about this accurately. Or I don't know enough on the subject. I remember seeing a clip recently where an atheist (I think it was Dawkins) said he couldn't accept any evidence for the existence of "God". He basically said that he would consider himself insane or hallucinating if such evidence appeared. And while I agree with Kierkegaard's argument that living life as a human being requires some form of Faith, I find the rejection of any evidence for the existence of God or even a "spiritual realm" rather narcissistic. I understand it to mean that Dawkins and others like him are the final arbiters of moral and intellectual realities and any evidence to the contrary must be rejected by others. This may be true in their own mind but doesn't necessarily hold true for the rest of humanity. Also, Dawkin's form of argumentation just appears to be that anything that the Bible says that he doesn't understand or can't interpret must be "evil" and must be rejected out of hand and that seems the height of egotism.

One of the problems here is that two different understandings of "evidence" get conflated. One is that of scientific evidence and the other is more like the evidence presented in a courtroom. While they are related they aren't identical, and I think that guys like Dawkins, being a scientist, ignore the distinction. With metaphysics, no matter what form it takes, you're never going to have a slam dunk argument one way or the other, if you limit your evidence to the "scientific."

@@robgrano6814 The atheist in the video I referenced said the if he saw physical evidence written across the sky among the stars he would assume he was insane or hallucinating. He just rejected the idea that there is any evidence for the proof of God. His rationale seemed to be that since God doesn't exist then there can be no acceptable evidence that proves God does exist. He has drawn a conclusion without accepting even the possibility that there could be proof to the contrary. The inverse of most rational and scientific arguments as I understand them.

I think youd find that truly no one does know whats going on- and that IS the position of Atheism or Agnosticism. Christianity attempts to claim they "know whats going on" whereas the scientific conclusion is that we don't know whether or not a god exists

To the best of my knowledge Jesus never ever mentioned "original sin". It is apparently a concept that first appeared in the scriptures by Paulus and was then developed in the 4rd century AD (Wikipedia). So what's the big deal? The core of Christianity are the words of Jesus. Let's stay with that.

There was a UK science Horizon programme many moons ago which suggested there was part of our brains that was 'engineered' (in inverted commas i hope you note) to worship a God of some sort. What would RD think about this I wonder ?

I'm sure the rabbi who preached around Judea two thousand years ago would agree with dawkins. This idea became a central doctrine after his death and does not align with traditional Jewish beliefs at the time.

In my view they are myths). But I do think that on some level there is something good and pure in all beings that can neither be broken nor stained, that we are basically good on some deeper level, but that we somehow have lost contact with that part of our being. But I guess this is a kind of religious thought, too ... and I can't prove it.

If something is man made, it means it exists in nature, even when we talk about our moral instincts (one could argue moral instincts are not man made) or our evolved cultural "intersubjective truths" or about good and evil (based on the moral instincts). Edit: clarification

@Linkyst Sin and Evil are 2 different things. Sin is not killing your Son because God tells you to. Evil would be killing your Son under any circumstance.

When Richard Dawkins says that something is evil, what does mean by that? To me, the idea behind the words "good" and 'evil" are human constructs, and very subjective to each individual.
